Four years had passed since he first found out about this engagement with one of the Way girls. He had all but forgot about the engagement because it was the last thing on his mind. He had pushed it so far back out of his life so that he wouldn’t have to continually think about it. Every so often his mother would call him up to make sure he was alive and well and would remind him that it was only so much more time until the two had to meet. After a night of drinking he forgot about it again. But that was all behind him now that tonight was the night he officially met his future wife.
It was so odd to him that his parents could arrange something like this. Marriage was a serious thing and it wasn’t to be taken lightly. For Wyatt, marriage wasn’t even in the picture and if he could, he’d put all of this off for as long as possible. He wasn’t ready to have kids with some girl he had never even met. He had a bad feeling about the whole thing. But it was his duty as a Montgomery to marry someone of high class and not put shame on the family name. Practically all of his family had died when he was younger and he needed to keep the bloodline going as well as the family name with this marriage. Because it would do both, he figured he could live with it. His parents had been arranged to marry and they eventually grew a mutual respect that turned into love. He wondered if he would have the ability to love. Wyatt had never been in love before. He didn’t think that it really even existed though and that was why he never had actual relationships. People in his life had always come and gone and the only people that had ever been a true constant in his life were his parents and Danno. The only reason Harper was going to be a constant in his life was because they were going to be married. He doubted someone as young as she would actually want to settle down with someone like him.
He doubted they’d get along as well as his parents thought. But he would at least try and be a gentleman for the sake of his reputation. He knew he would have to keep quiet for most of the night at this party that the Way family was holding for him and his mom and dad. The only person he was actually going to talk to was Harper. He’d try to get to know her tonight and they’d see how it went from there. She might even be more nervous than him. He didn’t doubt it. Wyatt had never been the kind of guy to get nervous. By now he was used to rolling with the punches and going with whatever life threw at him.
He showered and because this was one of those “show off all the money you have for your future son-in-law” parties, his parents were making him wear a tux. He really hated suits and tuxedos. But again, he had to please his parents, so he did what they asked. He decided to go with the navy blue instead of the black just to be a little colorful. As he finished getting ready he tried to come up with random topics to talk about with Harper. He doubted she would like in anything that he found interesting, so he came up with broader topics that they should both be able to relate to; ice breakers if you will. He figured if all else failed, he’d just get both of them drunk so they could bear each other for the night. When people were drunk they usually opened up more and he could hold his liquor well. He just hoped she could. She was just finishing up college, so she should have gone to enough parties by now to at least be able to drink some without getting tipsy so quickly.
He went downstairs where his parents were waiting for him and they left the house within the next tem minutes. The drive to the Way’s house wasn’t too far so he didn’t have too much time to overthink everything. His mother straightened his tie and his father poured them both a glass of Scotch to ease their nerves. Apparently his father was more nervous about this whole thing than he was. ”Now just remember to be yourself and they’ll love you, darling.” said his mother as she smiled up at him. Wyatt politely smiled back and nodded, but didn’t reply. His mother was biased toward him and would love him even if he were a serial killer, so her vote of confidence didn’t do much for him.
When they arrived, he counted the fancy cars and wondered why so many people were here. It wasn’t that big of a deal, was it? Or perhaps he had just underestimated how important this was to his and the Way family. He put on his big boy pants and straightened his shoulders. He had to show that Montgomery pride after all and would stand tall no matter what happened tonight. He was Wyatt Montgomery and nothing could get him down tonight… or so he told himself repeatedly in his head.

it was beautifully depressing [/style] [style=width:415px; border-right: 4px solid firebrick;] [style=width: 395px; font-family: arial; text-transform: lowercase; text-align: justify; font-size: 10px; color: white; text-align: justify; padding: 5px;] Honestly, Harper hadn’t expected to be the person to get an arranged marriage. She didn’t know why that logic came to her. Her mother had done it. She was the oldest in her small little family. Yet, she thought maybe someone would set Zoey up or Taylor. Someone higher up on the food chain, but she wasn’t too far off. She should have expected that to come. Harper hadn’t really known how to take the news. She fretted, she worried, but she knew her duty to her family. One thing was certain- she was going to be loyal. After what happened in her family- the lie she had been living with for only a couple of years now- had taken its toll on her mother and her’s relationship. The pair actually used to be rather close. Now Harper couldn’t even look at her. She focused on looking after Cameron and her dad who both remained oblivious. Who knew what else her sister thought, but Harper knew way too much. Now she was determined to be the perfect wife.
Except she wasn’t sure how to be. Harper tried to remain professional about it, but let’s face it- the dreams of a teenage girl was crushed. All the hopeless romantic in her vanished. All that prince and the princess stuff was pretty much gone. It wouldn’t keep her from loving all of that, but she was going to have to be reasonable. Another thing… she was very awkward. She was a giant geek, and she was sure that someone really wanted the beautiful tall fit woman who had their hair waving wildly and flawlessly in the wind. If Harper’s hair caught any wind, it was going to go into a straight frizz. She hadn’t quite known how to deal with her hair at that point, so she tried to straighten it as best as she could. Looking in the mirror, she heard the large chatters of her family gathering downstairs. It was a large event. Someone getting engaged and strengthening that werewolf chain. A knot twisted in her gut. It was easy to think about until Harper really focused on the details. She was going to meet the man she was going to have a family with. God, what if he was dumber than bricks? Someone like Harper had a very hard time trying to talk to someone that was a complete brut.
Still, she also had to remember that if he was the man of a rich high mannered family, he should be as modest. However, she looked at some of her own family members. Look at Cameron. No- wait, came out wrong. She loved Cameron to death, but she probably wouldn’t be able to be with someone like him. He was too reckless. Even at the age he was at. She was sure he would grow out of it, as she had her little stage of rebellion a couple of months ago before she wondered what the hell she was doing. Plus her grades had started dropping. Now look at her. She had struck a deal with her parents the night she found out that she wouldn’t get married until after college. A new husband and grade work just didn’t seem like a good combination to deal with. The more she could delay it, the better. For no reason although. Harper was still going to have to go through the wedding. Plus, she heard that the guy was considerably older than her. Less waiting for him was probably going to relieve him too.
Another thing. How excited was he, really? Was she going to be dealing with a guy who was angry about it? So pissed off he could be abusive? Harper wouldn’t stand for that no matter what family obligations she felt, but the thought of going through that scared her. What if it was a guy so painfully incredibly shy that it ended up Harper being the more experienced out of the two? God, they would do nothing but hold hands across the couch. Which actually would have been fine but the passing down the line thing was kind of useless. Harper was freaking out so much about this meeting that she just felt hot and sweaty. She was trying to cool herself off. Keep her head in place. However, it didn’t really end up working out. A knock on her door came to announce the guy was there. He was there. In the house. Harper felt like she was going to pass out. The insecure girl looked at herself one more time in the mirror, clearly not even a little satisfied from her look.
She turned, tripping on her carpet before actually reaching her door. Every step was almost slow motion. Harper had never felt like this before. Not even during hard exams she barely studied for. A whole new feeling. It about made her completely stop when she finally came down the stairs and saw the only people she didn’t recognize in the house. Couple of others with one tall guy closer to her age. Oh shit he was going to break her in fucking half. He had a nice lean build. Certainly handsome and professional looking from first impression, but little Harper (probably the smallest in the house currently) made him look giant. He looked like experience, laid-back, and even a strong leader by the way he stood and presented himself. Her green eyes darted towards him, trying to attempt a casual smile, as if she were completely aware and okay. She was anything but at this point.

Wyatt was greeted with a bright smiling face of an older woman with bright eyes and an elegant dress that showed off her curves just enough to make her noticable. Wyatt smiled to the woman who clasped her hands together and greeted him with a big hug. She cooed at him and introduced herself as Harper’s mother. Wyatt put on his most charming smile and introduced himself. His parents and she already knew each other so there was no need to introduce them. Wyatt was called a “silly boy” because they had already met before. He was just too young to remember apparently, though how could he foreget someone like Mrs. Way? She was quite adorable if he did say so himself. Wyatt walked into the giant house and was immediately bombarded with family members of the bride-to-be.
One boy in particular, Trent Way, Harper’s cousin, took an interest in him, and not the good kind either. Wyatt wondered if Trent disagreed with this whole thing, and honestly he couldn’t blame him because even he was having a difficult time with the whole thing still. It just hadn’t seemed real before now. He wondered if it ever would feel real, like he was actually going to marry this girl whom he had never met. Would he like her? Would she make him laugh? Wyatt was so nervous about the whole thing that he found himself needing a drink just to calm himself. Because he was here representing his family, he didn’t drink more than one glass of Scotch right away. He was offered a glass of champange but declined it because it was the kind of drink you had on New Years and at Weddings for toasts. And he would only grab a glass if they were toasting to something.
Another boy, Chandler Way, even taller than him by about 2 inches came up to him. At first Wyatt thought he was going to be an even more protective version of Trent, but he was actually much more calming than he expected. Chandler seemed to make Wyatt forget about his nerves and because he was just a big goofball, he felt more like he was back home with Danno than at some strangers house about to meet the girl he was going to marry. Wyatt took an instant liking to Chandler, which was good because he was pretty much the only one so far who had made him feel comfortable enough to laugh.
Wyatt interacted with the multitude of people at the party while they waited for Harper to come down. It only took a few minutes even though it felt like a few hours before the room fell silent and he followed their gazes to the top of the staircase to where a cute little redhead stood. She glanced around the room until her eyes finally locked on his. She gave a weak smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. Wyatt smiled back and walked towards her. It was obvious that she felt uncomfortable. In the pit of his stomach he felt guilt. He could put all of this off with just one word and Harper could go on living her life without having to worry about any of this. She wouldn’t have put shame on her family’s name and she wouldn’t be in line to marry a total stranger.
But he couldn’t. the image of his mother looking at him with embarassment and sorrow and disappointment was enough to make him forget all about that and focus on what was importand now. He was going to marry her, and he was somehow going to make her happy. If it was the last thing he did, he had to do that for Harper’s sake. It was the only other thing his mom wanted from him: to not just get married, but to make his wife happy. Harper didn’t look like the high mantinence kind of girl, which he liked, but she also seemed somewhat inexperienced and young. He reminded himself that she was ten years younger than him.
When he finally reached her at the bottom of the stairs, he held out his hand for hers. “Hi,” he said smiling. He paused for a moment and asked finally, “Can I get you a drink? I think we could both use one.” Wyatt tried to ease her nerves as best he could. Since they were going to be spending their entire lives together it would be good if they got off on the right foot. He hoped to heaven that she wasn’t the kind to turn down a good drink.

[style=width: 400px; font-family: georgia; text-align: center; font-size: 30px; line-height:40px; letter-spacing: -1px; text-transform: uppercase; color: firebrick; border-bottom: 1px dotted firebrick;]can't predict the end
it was beautifully depressing [/style] [style=width:415px; border-right: 4px solid firebrick;] [style=width: 395px; font-family: arial; text-transform: lowercase; text-align: justify; font-size: 10px; color: white; text-align: justify; padding: 5px;] There were many things that Harper wanted to bring up and reassure him about at the moment, but she didn’t want to bombard him and scare him away. Him running in the other direction was kind of what she was expecting. Very recently, she had “bloomed”, so all she could still think about was the frizzy haired freckled girl in the front seat of the classroom. She wanted to reassure him that her awkwardness wasn’t just the situation. It was her in general. She was always that way no matter if she was completely comfortable or completely uncomfortable. However, if she were the opposite, she didn’t think that she would want a young girl who didn’t know what graceful even was. She just tripped on her own carpet for Pete’s sake! Her stomach turned as she looked at him. While he was so much better than some of the horrors she came up with in her mind, he was almost too good. She wanted someone average. This wasn’t average. Congrats to her horrible mother who seemed to at least pick the handsome guys, huh? Harper fought back a frown at the thought, still not meeting her mother’s gaze.
Sometimes, she didn’t want to be an immortal and know what stupid things other individuals thought. However, at that moment, she almost wanted to give it all up just for that moment. What did he think of her? What was going through his head? Was it more than he expected or less than he expected? She heard that he knew about the engagement long before she did. Harper found out about a month or so before this event. Though a month sounded like a long time to recover from news like that, she still felt like it was a bit of a shock. Try to look confident. How did one look confident? Well, one sat up straighter… Harper arched her shoulders back, but it didn’t make her look any more confident in her opinion. What else. Head high. She titled her head up. Wait- too high. She lowered it to her original level. A confident woman probably wasn’t fidgeting with her own fingers. She tried to keep them still, but in doing so, it make her feet start to twist around. She stopped those. Ugh, she was a disaster.
Not to mention shy. That at least was going to get better over time, but at that moment, she was going to act like her shy self. Trying to meet his eye but finding every time she did it, she wanted to duck her head down and find something else to look at. An excuse to break eye contact. She started to look around. Wow, her whole family was there. Those that were close to her, like Trent, and those who were more just a part of the family, like Chandler. Supporting her. There were some faces that showed sympathy, some neutral, some excited and enthusiastic. Harper didn’t know which one of those she was feeling at that moment. She wished she could be one of those people who would just go numb or something, but no. It had to be the inside dying and not knowing what to do or say. Which was what she was dealing with now. Her hands continued to clasp each other to keep from having anything else move.
Except he held out his hand. She took it, knowing everyone’s eyes were on them. Harper couldn’t remember how much older he was than her. When he asked his question, she felt her stomach roll and turn, feeling like she was going to throw up. How was she supposed to even tell the man with a straight face she wasn’t old enough to drink yet? Fuck. Did she take it? She glanced over at her parents, who wouldn’t care. She was in the group among family and honestly only a year away from it. Twenty. There was a law they were looking at to say if the parent bought the drink, someone older than eighteen is allowed to drink, so there has to be some logic behind that, right? She had alcohol before. Small phase she went through the previous year when first going into college. So trying to look as confident as possible, she smiled, ”I’d love one.” It’d calm her down, right? Just as long as she didn’t have too much because she was a bit of… well embarrassing drinker to say the least. That was not the impression she wanted to give the man on the first meeting.
Harper walked a little further, seeing that her family was now starting to whisper among themselves. She never felt so out of place before. All of this was new and exciting. There was some reassurance knowing that no matter what happened, she wouldn’t be “forever alone” like she claimed in her younger high school years. There was someone for her to be there with and who looked very sophisticated. Someone not as dumb as stump. Someone strong… hopefully one who wouldn’t break her, although glancing at his general build, she was having some of her doubts on that. She tried to remain positive, but her worries came up again. Yeah, she needed that drink. Should she say something else? What could she ask? 'so uh life story, ready set go'. Curse her loss of words. Harper glanced over at him, bursting out with, "I hope the rest of the family hasn't been giving you too much trouble." Oh come on Harper, really? She didn't think it was as bad as something she could have said, but man, she could have done a hell lot better. She was going to spend the entire time trying to think of questions to ask him.

As far as he could tell, she was a beautiful young woman. She seemed sweet and he could tell she was nervous by the way she looked around instead of locking her eyes with his. He completely understood why she would be so afraid. He was a complete stranger and her parents were expecting her to marry him. Wyatt had known about the engagement for far longer than she had so he had prepared himself for this moment for much longer than she had. Wyatt knew what he was getting himself into with the Way family, he knew his responsibilities and duties that he would have to carry out to keep this engagement going and his parents happy. What he didn’t know was whether or not Harper was okay with all of this. He was sure her mind was racing. He wondered if she was nervous about marrying him or if it was the fact that he was so much older than her. Hopefully he would be charming enough to get her to trust him and make her feel comfortable with him because the last thing he wanted to do was freak her out or scare her away.
There were many different scenarios he had come up with that could possibly happen tonight. He was prepared for the engagement to end if Harper was unsatisfied or if her parents didn’t see them fit for each other; he also was ready for Harper to welcome him and show him off like some sort of toy (which now looking at her, he could never imagine happening); but what he hadn’t imagined would happen was that Harper would be a shy girl. The last time he had seen her she was smiling and happy and Wyatt had assumed that was the way she was around everyone. Of course he hadn’t actually met her that day, but rather his parents were showing him who he was to be married to when she was of age. He should have known he would get a little mouse for a wife, someone he wouldn’t know what to talk to about.
She would probably be repulsed at his lifestyle and his job and likely the only thing she admired about him was that he was in the Navy. Like his mother, she would probably think little of his professional fighting career and wish him to be something else like a lawyer or at the least work in an office where he wasn’t getting his face bashed in constantly. But fighting was what he was good at and he made good money doing it. Not only that, but it kept him in really good shape. But his job had downfalls, too, like the fact that he had cauliflower ear and bruises and scars all over his body. Most of the time women thought it was sexy in a way, but he doubted Harper would see it that way.
The two were from completely different worlds. He had always worked hard for what he wanted and, Wyatt thought, by the looks of this mansion and how fancy everyone dressed, Harper probably hadn’t worked a day in her life. He had always admired people who worked for what they wanted because they didn’t just have things handed to them. Wyatt wouldn’t hold it against her if she was spoiled because it wouldn’t be her fault, but he sure as hell wouldn’t be the kind of guy to give her everything and if she assumed he would be then she was in for a rude awakening. But there was something about the way Harper looked at him that didn’t really scream “spoiled brat”. And he was glad for it.
The two got drinks, he clinked his glass with hers. Wyatt did his best to ignore the fact that people had started to whisper amongst themselves, most likely about him and Harper. Wyatt took a large sip of his champagne and turned to face Harper. “Your family has been great actually. Your parents seem nice.” Wyatt noticed Harper’s mom out of the corner of his eye and raised his glass to her with a charming smile. He turned back to look at her. “You look beautiful by the way,” he said still with the same smile.
