Nineteen (467 years old)
Ghost
Female; Hetero
Frida GustavssonSuffers from Severe Psychosis; SchizophreniaHears a “voice” in her head named Charlotte (Charlie). Celeste began hearing her a few weeks after her death. It’s a coping mechanism for her loneliness.
THE DEATH: Celeste died at the age of nineteen during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. It was 1564 at the time (448 years ago), making her 467 years old. She died of influenza – a devastating event to the family, as well as the Queen herself. Celeste resided in the Royal Palace of England, being a close friend of the Royal family (particularly Elizabeth, even though they were eleven years apart in age). Celeste’s family lived as peasants on a farm, though she visited frequently.HISTORY
Born: March 3, 1545.
Died: December 21, 1564.
Do you believe in the myth of “die young and stay pretty forever?” If not, then you may want to reconsider. Celeste died at a mere nineteen years old, and her breathtaking beauty still vividly remains. Her youthful skin and flowing brown hair still appear as if she hasn’t aged a day over nineteen. Yet, some things may look pretty and be entirely rotten on the inside. Rotten is debatable, but dead – that’s a definite. Celeste never fully died, as her soul still lingers among the grounds. She has been here for 448 years longer than she should have been. This is long enough to drive one insane – and to insanity she went! The loneliness of a ghostly life took its toll upon the English girl just two weeks after her death (she didn’t last very long). Though perhaps she never really was sane, but back in the 1500’s sanity was never really considered or tested for as it is now. Before we get into life after death, we must recover what happened before the girl’s death.
1545 – 1556: The day Celeste Faye O’Conner was conceived into this world was March 3, 1545. The Royal Reign was still led by Mary I, or as many would call her or remember her today, Bloody Mary. Celeste’s parents were Randolph O’Conner and Adele O’Conner. She was not nearly an only child – having two sisters and two brothers. Celeste happened to be the favorite daughter of the family, being the eldest. Rachel, the sister born after her, was just two years younger than she; Abigail, being the youngest of the family, was six years younger than she. Rachel and Celeste were inseparable, being more of best friends rather than sisters. The two were town favorites, with big smiles and exceeding politeness for everyone. Celeste was known for her poise; she had the poise of someone of royalty. Although – she was also known for being headstrong. Celeste was far from submissive (something English women were supposed to be at the time); she always stood up for herself and never let anyone walk over her. It got her into quite a lot of trouble but it also sparked interest in the eyes of the royal families. In 1556, the family of Lord Henry IV visited the O’Conner’s farm, already arranging his and Celeste’s marriage while Celeste was just eleven years old. Though, this was considered an achievement during the 1500’s, and made Celeste a prized possession of her family.
1560: 1560 was the year Celeste was finally sent to the Royal Palace of England to officiate her marriage to Lord Henry IV. She was fifteen years old. Her heart broke as she left her family’s farm, sitting alone in a horse drawn carriage on her way to the heart of England. She felt pressure suffocating her, taking all of the air from her lungs; pressure because now she was making a name for her family. Family is important – and so is rank and status. She almost wanted to protest; she wasn’t supposed to be used for bringing money into the family – they basically sold her off! As much as this made her stomach twist and turn and her blood to boil, she could feel nothing but love and longing for her family. Rachel was the hardest for Celeste to leave; Celeste began writing to her on her way to the Palace.Rachel,
I’m sitting in this bumpy carriage and all I can do is regret the very moment I stepped into it. I know this is what Mother and Father want, and that it’s for the better of our family, but can you imagine? Being married to a man you’ve met only once? Basically being sold to him? I don’t know, maybe I’m over thinking it – so many English women go through this. I almost want to throw a tantrum and make them bring me back home – but I must respect our elders. This is terrible already, and I’m not even half way there. I don’t know, maybe Henry will be kind – but how is that so when he is practically buying me for marriage?
I’m terrified, Rachel, terrified and infuriated yet utterly frozen. For the first time, I cannot do anything. It’s as if they’ve cut out my very tongue so I have no voice; I’ve never felt so powerless in my life.
I need you now more than anything but I’ve been sent into this alone. I don’t know what to do. Well, there is nothing I can do but oh how I wish I could! I’m only fifteen years old! I do not want to lay with this man, but I know that I must. Is that considered rape? No, probably not, we’re going to be married – it’s part of the tradition. Oh god, what have I gotten myself into. What am I going to do? I will not be able to bear the loneliness of the colossal palace. Oh, Rachel, why couldn’t you endure this journey with me? Why hadn’t I asked? I’m visiting as soon as I can; that’s all I want right now. I miss the farm, the chickens, and those brutal chores Mother would always force us to do. I never thought I would say that, but I really do.
My heart is pounding in my chest, throbbing, and my stomach is twisting from fear. I hate this. I hate this so much. I don’t even want to meet the new Queen of England! She means nothing to me, nor does the rest of the Royal family. Oh god, I can’t say that though – I haven’t even met them and hear I am already stating that I do not like them. Maybe they’re kind hearted and will make this experience far less painful than it has to be. I do not know. I do not want to know. I just want to go home.
I must go now, we are approaching. Write me quickly! I need you, Rach.
Celeste
1561 – 1564: Upon arriving at the Royal Palace, Celeste was greeted by almost all of the Royal family. Queen Elizabeth I was then in reign, and Celeste will never forget the warmth of her greeting. Despite what she initially believed, Elizabeth became one of her dearest friends. Celeste married Lord Henry IV a week after her arrival; the awkwardness of the wedding was unbearable. Shamefully, Celeste went through with it – though outwardly proud and perfectly poised, internally she was dying. Elizabeth initially sympathized with Celeste, seeing as Henry was just a way up in status that Celeste family had forced upon her, and so the two spent much time together. They were alike in their headstrong manner, and Celeste looked up to her as not only a ruler of her home, but also as a motherly figure (a best friend motherly figure that is).
Celeste had always been a loyal wife to Henry – that was, until Elizabeth introduced her to the dashing guard by the name of Adrian. He had dark hair and a dark skin tone, and Celeste could not help but fall deeply in love with the man as he did with her. She desired deeply to run away with him, and forget her “marriage” and “status.” Everything was supposed to be about love, isn’t that what fairy tales always told us? Celeste believed in this idea the moment she laid eyes on Adrian. He gave her a rebellious thrill (she was still a teenager), and she loved that. Though she knew her place in the world, and that she could not ever go against Henry IV – no matter how many times her and Adrian fought over the matter.
It was the winter of 1564 when Celeste fell deathly ill with influenza – which back then was deadly. She fought the sickness for about a month; with Adrian occasionally visiting her bedside – as well as Henry IV. Drama caused her last weeks to be miserable; her secret was out, and her family name was officially burdened because of her actions. Yet she was dying practically alone, her family not even close to where she was. She wrote her sister a final letter:Rachel,
I am sitting her in my deathbed without a soul around me. Not my family, not my husband, and not my love. Elizabeth and Adrian visit me daily, but Henry refuses to even see me. I feel so ashamed. I hope Mother and Father do not hate me – I don’t know what I would do if I died with their feelings being of hatred for me. Though, I guess I deserve it. Our family name has been stained, and it’s entirely my fault. All for love. Oh stupid, stupid love and how it plays with our beating hearts.
If you had to ask me if it was worth it, I would not know what to say. I still send all of my love to Adrian for he means more than the world to me, but I don’t know. I don’t know if I would do it again. I feel being heartless is the only way to a truly successful life. If I didn’t have a heart, I would not be in this position. I would have prided our family name rather than burden it. I would have risen to higher power and done what I could to help the people of England – but instead I chose love. A young, blind love affair. I do not know if I will ever be able to love again for my heart will always be with Adrian. How can they really blame me though? I’m married to a husband who shows me no affection, and who does not even sleep in the same bed as me. I don’t know, maybe I was just naïve.
I love you, Rachel. Tell the rest that I love them dearly as well and will forever hold them in my heart. I don’t want this to be goodbye, so until next time.
Love Always,
Celeste
And so, life after death tragically began. Celeste would find that her soul was doomed to forever roam the Earth. Some may see this as a blessing, but to her it was the most dreadful curse she would ever have to endure. To her – it was hell; a punishment for ruining her family name and breaking their hearts.
1564 – 1570: The year after Celeste’s death was the hardest for the poor girl. Her soul remained in the world – forever burdened to wander through lifelessly and invisible (or so she thought). She believes to be in hell; that this is what happens to people who sin – they never rest and they never die. It was only two weeks after her death when Celeste began to lose her mind. She wandered the palace for a long while (a long while meaning, hundreds of years), and loneliness was beginning to drive Celeste crazy. That is when she met Charlotte.Charlotte Bennington
Nineteen Years Old
English
Rebellious, stubborn, nasty, twisted, crazy, cynical, and controlling.
Oh Charlotte, doesn’t she sound lovely? Well, Charlie (as Celeste began to call her) is just a fictional character made up in Celeste’s pretty little mind. She remains in her subconscious, and when I say controlling – I mean Charlie has a bigger influence on Celeste’s actions than Celeste herself. If Charlie didn’t like something, Celeste wasn’t allowed to do it. If Charlie wanted something, Celeste did it. Sadly, Charlie became Celeste’s one and only friend. Seeing as, being a newborn ghost Celeste didn’t have the power to become visible (and didn’t know about that either), Celeste was lonely.
In psychology this is considered a defense mechanism – Celeste would be diagnosed with severe psychosis if she were to see a psychiatrist. After a few weeks, however, Celeste returned to her family farm – invisibly watching her brothers and sisters. Though after 16 painful years of this, Celeste went back to the only other place she’d ever known – the palace.
1570 – 1675: Celeste living in the heart of England for a little over a hundred years – watching tragedies and happiness as the royalty rose and fell throughout time. She missed her family – especially Rachel – even though she would never feel more ashamed as she saw their lives crumble just because of her mistakes. When Celeste returned to the palace, Adrian was nowhere to be found – and so Celeste wept for weeks, months, maybe even years. The only thing that brought happiness to her eyes was gone. The worst part was that she couldn’t find out where to – nobody ever said anything. Perhaps he left out of heartbreak from her death – Celeste liked to believe that, but Charlie chastised her for feeling even the slightest bit of remorse. Charlie doesn’t particularly believe in love, while young Celeste believed in Adrian as her fairy tale love. As time went on, Charlie’s thoughts on love became Celeste’s and her heart was forever guarded. She had already found the love of her life, and she swore to keep her heart with him for the entirety of the her life… death?
Around 1675, Charlie forced Celeste from the palace. Celeste enjoyed the comfort of what she knew, but Charlie was sick of it. So they left – or Celeste left. Where to? No where in particular.
1675 – 1800: These years of wandering were the years where Celeste lost it even further, if that was even possible. She was aloof and just wandering through the world without a care in the world. Honestly, she lived in the wild with the animals, so how could she not go literally insane? It wasn’t until the 1700’s where Celeste met her first ghost(s). She was in shock because the others talked to her – they could see her! This realization caused more insanity to seep through her veins. This is when she was taught to turn herself visible to the human eye. Oh, how delighted she was to finally be able to do this! After years of isolation Celeste was too afraid to go back to the human world. She spent most of her time as a ghost, socializing with other ghosts.
1800 – 1900: Celeste began to learn of the supernatural world – witches, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, demons, angels, firetamers, faeries, merpeople, etc. This was all so exciting to the young, yet extremely old, girl. After years of being a ghost, Celeste began to find it fun to play pranks on others. Let me rephrase that – CHARLIE began to find it fun to play pranks on others. Celeste is not very powerful when it comes to Charlie, she finds it impossible to go against Charlie’s will and block her out. These were the years when Celeste began to learn to force Charlie to leave every now and then. It was when Charlie wanted Celeste to kill a little girl – a firetamer to be exact – because Charlie wanted to see the outcome. Celeste unfortunately was not powerful enough at the time of the occurrence, so the little girl was killed.
Celeste ran. She ran for months. That’s when she found herself wound up in the United States of America.
1900 – 2000: America was a complete culture shock to Celeste. Everything was so different than Europe. The accents were rather funny – they all sounded like hicks (or maybe that was because she was in the south). She lived for a very long time in Mississippi (who knows why), for some reason she enjoyed the ladies in sundresses. Though unfortunately – this was the time when African Americans were slaves. Being in the south at this time was difficult, and sadly, Charlie was on the white side while Celeste couldn’t care less – she couldn’t keep that poor little girl off her mind, nor Adrian. After 400 years you would think the memory of Adrian would begin to fade – but Celeste could never forget him. Her heart ached every day because of it. She was basically sleepwalking through these years – she has barely any recollection because she practically gave in to whatever Charlie wanted. She felt powerless, yet she couldn’t even find it in herself to really care.
2000 – 2012: In the year 2000 (you know, the first “end of the world” scare), Celeste decided to grow up. Maybe not grow up because she’s over four hundred years old, but more so she began to take charge of her life again. She was capable of holding herself visible for long periods of time at this point, but she preferred to remain invisible to humans. I guess it was out of habit because she wasn’t used to human interaction anymore. Everyone seemed the think she was a little wack-o because she is so out of touch with reality. She still practically thinks like they did in the 1500’s, with a thick British accent to accompany it. She doesn’t really understand technology – in face she’s pretty much against it. In 2012 she moved to Manuka – buying her first house… ever (since she never got old enough to purchase her own house as a human). She’s terrible at using her cell phone (doesn’t even have a landline) and she has her very first computer but hasn’t a clue how to use it. She just wanted a place to sleep, I suppose. She can practically steal anything she wants because nobody can really see her if she doesn’t want them to. A bit of a kleptomaniac, Celeste has become – but you can blame Charlie for that. Aloof, psychotic, and depressive, Celeste has begun another chapter in her never ending life.PERSONALITY
Celeste spends a lot of time in her past – reminiscing and what not. Her mind is never really entirely “there.” She has basically no sense of reality, not realizing what the world is really like in 2012 and how it is different that her world. She just… doesn’t really care all that much. Clearly she isn’t going to walk around in 1500 style dresses, but she just doesn’t comprehend to whole “work” thing. She finds it weird how everybody lives to work and works to live. She’s become much of a daydreamer – since she spent so much time alone, she found her own creativity to be extremely comforting. With that “creativity” and imagination came Charlotte Bennington – a figure of Celeste’s subconscious.CHARLOTTE BENNINGTON: A controlling, psychotic bitch to put it simply. Charlie is influential – and not in the good way. She plagues Celeste’s thoughts with urges of rebellion and crime. If Charlie herself were to be diagnosed by a psychiatrist, she would have Antisocial Personality Disorder. A very severe case of APD, to be exact. She’s manipulative and criminal. She’s cruel and immoral. She’s untruthful and arrogant. She doesn’t give a damn about anyone’s feelings – especially Celeste’s. Charlie absolutely loves being in control of Celeste’s mind and body. She went about a hundred years entirely in control during the time when Celeste practically gave up. She despises Celeste’s bursts of confidence where Charlie is almost entirely forced out of Celeste’s mind. She despises the fact that Celeste finally has come to this power. Celeste is basically Charlie’s bitch, to put it simply, seeing as Celeste’s depressive state of mind left her unwilling to fight for her own sanity. Though more recently, as Celeste begins to wane back to her true self, the two are butting heads. Most of the time the two get along – when Charlie isn’t really trying to control Celeste and is more so just talking to her. To a bystander Celeste just appears to be talking to herself – embarrassing right? Luckily, most people can’t see her unless she wants them to.
The more vague term for Celeste’s condition would be severe psychosis (though, in technical terms, she would most definitely be diagnosed with schizophrenia). Charlotte, or Charlie (as Celeste prefers to call her), is literally a figure of Celeste’s imagination. She’s has a powerful influence over Celeste seeing as Celeste is not strong enough to ward Charlie away. Though being with Charlie for over four hundred years, Celeste has become far stronger in the sense of controlling herself rather than Charlie controlling her.
Celeste is insanely guarded; she believes her heart to only be for one man and one man only – and it has already been given away. It could be falsely believed that she no longer believes in love, but she doesn’t really know anymore. Ever since her family disowned her because of her affair with the man she truly loved, she began to believe that love seems to mess everything up. So instead, she just does not think of it at all – all she does is long for Adrian and let herself weep over him. She’s been tainted and her aloofness can’t be mistaken for happiness (although many seem to mistake it as so). More so, her mind has wandered for many years to the point where she no longer has her sanity. Charlotte and Celeste always fighting for control really begins to change ones personality – seeing as you’re struggling to control your own brain.
All in all, Celeste herself is a pretty kind person. She’s a bit shy (being alone for so many years can do that to you), and rarely shows herself to anyone other than other ghosts because she can’t control that. Many do not understand Celeste, which I can’t blame them. Who thinks a girl who talks to herself is considered normal? She’s a tad bit insane – more than a tad, really. One can find her sitting in a field, playing with flowers, and having in depth conversations with someone who isn’t even there. Those who know her would know exactly what was going on, but to a stranger… that’s definitely a sign for “run the fuck away.”
She loves people – she finds them fascinating. Celeste will talk to random people, saying a bunch of nonsense and randomness, have conversations with practically everyone – contradicting to the fact that she doesn’t like to show herself to people. That could be considered shy, as I said before, but she’s more just selective. She chooses what time she wants to be social and what time she wants to sulk by herself. Catch her in a quiet mood and she probably won’t say much or anything, but catch her in a good mood and she’ll ramble on and on about nothing (a bit like bipolar disorder, but she doesn’t really have the intense depressive state – more of just mania). Many don’t really understand what she says, and it could be taken literally or just brushed off and ignored. It depends on whether or not you truly understand what it is she is saying.
Now, Charlie has turned her into a bit of a kleptomaniac. She lives as a ghost – why should she have to work? Celeste has never worked for a minute of her life, why should she start now after over four hundred years? Well… she isn’t. She steals what she wants and she loves to do it. One thing Charlie and her agree on! Though, it wasn’t initially Celeste’s idea… Charlie just got her into it. The only thing Celeste didn’t steal is the house she is living in now. Well, the money she bought it with was stolen… so I guess that means the house was stolen as well. Oops.
Celeste is complex and unpredictable – making a summary of her entire personality to be practically impossible. Therefore, I will leave it at that, and the rest is up for you to learn and find out on your own.
