My heart is pierced by Cupid
I disdain all glittering gold
There is nothing can console me
But my jolly sailor bold.

CORDELIA NERIN SIRENA
cory. 21. female. straight. mermaid. neutral. holly.
Twenty-one years ago a little mermaid egg hatched to Nerissa and Merrick Sirena. She was of course beautiful like all mermaids are with her golden tail, little tufts of dark hair, and bright greenish eyes. Her parents couldn’t be happier to have such a healthy little mermaid as a daughter and all her cousins were of course excited as well. They named her Cordelia, which means jewel of the sea, because of how bright her eyes shone. Almost like jewels themselves. The Sirena clan belonged to a much bigger school of mermaids that migrated together around the Caribbean islands which provided warm waters, beautiful climates, and, most importantly, many people.
In the school of mermaids were about five clans who lived mostly underwater or one the rocks that formed little plateaus on the water. These plateaus were used as mostly sleeping places because of the fact that it was constantly being doused with water so the mermaids were almost never without their tails. In fact Cordelia only ever had her feet three times in her whole life and those were very brief times. She never cared though. She loved her tail. Even as a young age she would try and swim with the older mermaids/mermen, but she could never keep up with them. It didn’t matter though because she had so many little children to swim around with. Cordelia was never alone and everyone seemed to love her bubbly and cheerful personality. Many of the older merpeople would always tease her asking if she ever stopped smiling and she would just shake her head that famous smile still stuck on her face. She was described as a joy by everyone.
At the age of eleven Cordelia started to realized her siren abilities and where ever she went she began to sing. She wanted to become amazing like her older cousins and her mother. Yes, her mother had been a siren before retiring like all sirens did after awhile. Naïve little Cordelia thought the idea of being a siren to be the best thing in the world. To be able to have such a hypnotic voice that could capture the heart of any human was her dream. For hours on end she’d swim to be by herself and sing to the fish and other sea creatures even though they probably couldn’t even understand her. Cordelia never cared though. Cordelia always talked to the fish and treated them like her pets. She would even bring some home and try to keep it until it would swim away. So it was only natural for her to want to sing to them to see how well she was at being a siren. Cordelia wasn’t the best judge at her own abilities but by age twelve she thought she had gotten pretty good because whenever she would sing the fish seemed to pay attention to her while she sang her siren song. This accomplishment meant everything to Cordelia. To her it meant that maybe she could be an amazing like all of her family. As soon as this happened she swam as fast as she could home and told her parents. They were proud of course, but they weren’t sure if their little twelve year old was ready to capture unsuspecting humans. Cordelia, of course, spent the whole rest of the night trying to convince them to let her go out and try. The little mermaid had no idea what she was about to really do though. In her mind she was just capturing their hearts and she didn’t really know what happened after that. She never asked what happened after they went into the water because she had always wanted it to be a surprise. Little did she know that she was practicing to be a killer of humans.
After a whole week of begging her mother finally caved and let her go with three of her older cousins and told her to follow every order her cousins gave her. Of course Cordelia did as they swam to the waters that were more coastal because she wanted to be a permanent siren even though she was a little young to be a siren still being just twelve years old. Her cousins were kind to her as they swam and slowed a little for her at times since they were around nineteen and eighteen so much better swimmers than her, but she was able to keep up for the most part. When they got to where a few humans were in their sail boats relaxing Cordelia was told to stay hidden and to just watch for the first few times. So Cordelia listened to them and watched on the surface of the water as they sang their siren songs and lured the humans into the water before drowning them. Cordelia was surprised to say the least. She was also horrified and was about to swim back until her cousins stopped her. They explained how killing humans were for their own safety and for them to prosper. Humans were sometimes a source of food for the mermaids and Cordelia tried to understand. It was for their own good. Being a siren was like a source of protection and food. Though Cordelia couldn’t exactly stomach the idea of eating humans and from that night on decided to try and eat as little human as she could.
After a few weeks of coming with them and watching the little twelve year old lured her first human to his watery grave. She didn’t know how she felt after doing it though. She knew that it was for the best, but she couldn’t stop this guilt growing in her stomach. She continued to kill humans because she loved being a siren and she wanted to be like her cousins and her mother. By the time she was fourteen she was always able to kill humans with her song and while guilt stayed in her stomach she knew that it was for her people’s protection. Humans were dangerous and were known for trying to capture mermaids for show. Even from a young age Cordelia had been told to always stay away from them no matter what she did and she tried to stay by the rule. Even when she went with her cousins and other merpeople she tried to stay away from them until it was completely necessary. Still Cordelia always found herself so interested by them. The way they’d dance and move. How happy they looked and all the strange things they did. Sometimes Cordelia wondered what it’d be like to join them. To have legs for more than less than fifteen minutes and to be able to walk well. To not trip over herself ever time she got up. It seemed like such a wrong thought and she was afraid that everyone else would say about her if she expressed such feelings. So all these thoughts were kept to herself.
By the time she was eighteen she was an expert swimmer and siren. One of the best for her age. Not to mention that a few boys were already trying to get her hand for marriage once they were older. It was no mystery to anyone why those few boys wanted her so bad. She was beautiful with her emerald eyes and golden tale. Her waves of brunette and dazzling smile against her sun kissed skin. The older she got the prettier she became. Cordelia never saw herself as the most beautiful though because really there was no such thing as an ugly merperson. All the girls in her school of merpeople were gorgeous, but Cordelia did stick out with her tail of gold hue. Most of the girls had mixtures of green, purple, and blue. Not Cordelia though. Hers was a bright gold that shimmered with every movement. It was Cordelia’s favorite part about herself. Her other features just seemed to blur together with all the other beautiful faces. With a situation like this Cordelia cherished the boys that chased after them and tried her best to give them the attention they wanted and to not be rude or mean. Cordelia was never one of the girls to lead a guy on or to try and play with his feelings. She found that incredibly cruel and mean. She just couldn’t hurt someone like that. Especially someone of her own kind.
The next three years were pretty average and nothing much happened to her except for the dating that she had been doing. Cordelia knew that she would needed a husband soon, but she wasn’t one for arranged marriages. She was a true love kind of girl even though not many merpeople believed in that like she did. Her parents would always try and convince her to marry the boys they picked out for her, but she just couldn’t do it. Cordelia always had listened to her heart and her heart told her to do anything, but force a marriage. It would just be so unlike her to force anything. She was just a go with the flow kind of person. Like the gentle lapping waves on the shore line. She followed the tide. After a few year her parents came to accept her decision to find true love even though they didn’t believe it. Cordelia did though. She knew that in one of the five large clans was her soulmate. She just had to keep trying. Everything seemingly was going well in Cordelia’s life until the eve of the twenty-first birthday. A huge storm hit and the waves were larger than Cordelia had ever seen. The rain, lightning, and winds blinded her and she couldn’t find her way around. The force of the water drifted her away from her school and after hours of trying to swim against the currents and storm was slammed against a rock and was knocked out. For the first time in her life she was away from her school and all because of the stupid storm.
When the mermaid woke up she was frightened to the say the least. She was devastated, confused, and scared. She had no idea where she was and she didn’t even know where to start looking. After what seemed like hours of thinking of what to do she decided to just start swimming in one direction and see where it got her. She would have to find them soon enough. The ocean was only so big. So Cordelia swam for days, but she was no closer to finding her family. She was lost at sea and she didn’t even know how she would ever find them. After those days of swimming Cordelia just gave up and began to just sing to herself to lighten her mood. Singing always made her happy. Cordelia just sang and sang not caring who was around until she saw a boat come towards her. First, Cordelia was curious and intrigued by the boat. She had never seen anything like it. It was interesting in a way. But as it got closer she saw humans on it and hide on the surface of the water like she had always been told to do. As they got even closer she saw that they had weapons aboard. They were mermaid hunters. Cordelia shot off into the opposite direction of them the moment she saw the weapons and didn’t even stay to see what they’d do. They were after her though and she could only distance herself from them for so long before they shot a harpoon at her. The harpoon hit her straight in the stomach and they began to pull her back in to them and Cordelia swore she had never felt so much pain before. She writhed as they reeled her in and with as much strength as she had she pulled the harpoon out and flopped to the water. Swimming away as fast as she could with a trail of blood following behind her she eventually passed out only to wash up on the shores of Manuka still alive.
