dear adelaide,
it took me so long to write, i apologize. it's just that i didn't know what to say. for so long i've felt terrible for leaving, but i understand it was the right thing to do. your uncle is a good man, i know he'll take great care of you. this whole thing may be difficult for you to understand now, but i promise that it's better without me in your life.love,
mommy
age ten.
"adelaide rested on her stomach, damp grass staining her shirt. uncle aaron got her nice clothes, but she often forgot how much they cost when she picked dandelions and blew the puffs away.
she watched the other people at the park, especially the parents, and rested her cheek in a hand. she had a lot in her life, but she would never have her father to swing her or her mother to give her a piggyback ride. she tied the stem into a knot, angry tears prickling her eyes.
it wasn't fair."
age eleven.
to mr. harrison:
i would like to request a parent-teacher conference with you to discuss adelaide's behavior. she has been exhibiting violent tendencies and has been harassing her pupils. expulsion is a possible reality at this point, but i hope to straighten this out with you first. she is a bright girl, she just needs to focus.sincerely,
harold fisher
principal.
age twelve.
""why did she leave me?"
aaron knelt down to her eye level, even though it was unnecessary. she had grown so tall. "she had a lot of problems," was all he said, and she looked at him with her stubborn stare.
instead of playing the question game she usually did, she took a breath and said, "i was one of them, right?"
and he couldn't answer when she walked away.
age thirteen.
uncle aaron,
i'm running away, and you can't stop me. i don't want to live with you anymore. it sucks here. i'm going to find my mother and stay with her.adelaide
ps i hate your guts.
age fourteen.
"what's your problem, anyway?"
adelaide put her hands on her hips as the girl shouted at her from the cement, brushing a strand of hair out of her face.
"i know you've been talking about me," addie said with a shake of her head. "so i just thought i should tell you to stop."
"such a bitch," the girl mumbled.
she did not talk about adelaide again."
age fifteen.
to adelaide dubois:

age sixteen.
"the child looked dishearteningly at the candy he had just dropped, skittles spilling over the pavement. adelaide looked at him for a moment before thanking the vendor for her ice cream and walking over to the boy.
"here," she said, holding out the cone and he looked on with wide eyes as if terrified.
"ma...mama said not to talk to strangers."
she pursed her lips before nodding. "no you shouldn't," she said. "my name's addie, i'm a leo, and my favorite show is spongebob. want to be friends?"
the rest of the day was spent talking about different flavors of ice cream."
age seventeen.
dear uncle aaron,
greetings from the mountains of aspen, colorado. where you can see...snow. lots of snow. actually, this has been the best retreat of my life, so thank you for letting me go! i've been having so much fun over the past week, but i still can't wait to get home.
i've been thinking about what i wanna do after school ends, and i know it might upset you, but i don't think it's college. i just don't see it in my plans for the future. i just want you to know i am thinking about my future.love,
addie.
age eighteen.
""she's been fighting for years."
adelaide watched the blond girl as stephanie spoke in hushed tones, her eyes moving up and down her figure. she was built for battle, all muscle and sinew and curves. "she's pretty," the girl noted as she wrapped the bandages around her hand.
stephanie looked at her, expression incredulous, but adelaide was already walking over to the new girl, extending her hand as she said, "kaylee, right?" her eyes sparkled with interest."
age nineteen.
you have one new text message.
adelaide, it's your mother. you should call me soon, we have a lot to talk about.
age twenty.
"adelaide peered over her carreras, a sly smile curling her lips as she looked at the boy waiting tables. she looked down at the cup of coffee in front of her, waiting for the heat to fade from her face before she knocked it over with the back of her hand.
"oh!" she said, jumping up and taking the napkin with her, dabbing at her jeans with it as she looked around.
the server came over, concern in his eyes as he asked, "do you need anymore napkins?"
she nodded, the heat filling her up again. "uh, yeah...thank you so much.""
age twenty-one.
"adelaide stared her uncle down as he sat at the kitchen table, reading glasses on. she wore heels that made her even taller than she already was, her hair thrown up into a loose bun.
"what happened to my mother's present?"
he looked up. "i sent it back to her."
adelaide looked stricken for a moment, but closed her eyes, taking deep breaths as she always practiced. then she opened her eyes, and it was like she was twelve again, the stubborn eyes. "what is going on here, why don't you want me talking to her?"
aaron pushed himself up from his seat, placing the pen down before walking over to his niece. they were almost the same height. "you know why, addie."
"you're hiding something," she said simply, cagily. she stepped back and crossed her arms. "you can't do this anymore, i'm twenty-one years old, i should be in control of my life."
"then it's about time you got a job and moved out."
that was all that she needed to spur her on. the doubt in his voice that she would ever do such a thing. her pride would not allow it.
"i'm staying over kaylee's."
she walked away with a swing in her hips, not looking back."
