Why had life all of the sudden gone so horribly, horribly, wrong? One day things had been perfect, well perfect enough, and then on the flip of a dime her world had turned upside down. If it hadn't of been for her father then things still would have been just fine. But of course anything that he didn't like was gotten rid of with a snap of his fingers. When he had discovered her "ability" he had sent her away to the most extensive and expensive testing facility in the area. The worst three years of her life by far. All that testing and prodding, it was like being an animal locked in a cage with no hope of escape.
Escape had come after three years though and she had never bothered to even look back. Her family, her life, everything was left back in Bucharest and she was long gone. Instead of the young Duchesse Elizabeth she was now the nobody living on the streets. But it wasn't all bad, at least she was free now to live her own life. It was quite impossible to tell she was anything more than a street rat. The outfit she had escaped in was the same one she was still wearing. A dirt smudged smock of sorts with flat cloth shoes. Her face, arms and legs were smudged with durt as well and her hair was in tatters and knots. But looks weren't important to her, keeping under the radar was.
Now sitting on a cardboard box in a dark alleyway she was blending in well. With people walking by and not even noticing her it seemed like little Elizabeth Vatican had truly disappeared. [/center][/blockquote]

Seeing as currently Tristan had no human to look after, he was left to look after all the other humans around... Also those of the weaker species that could not take care of themselves. It was his job, he had been told as much, and if Tristan was honest, he didn't really mind that. Right now he was just walking. Tristan didn't know where, but he new that he needed the comfort of the fresh air that he could not physically feel. That was what sucked when you were an angel of any kind, you can't feel any physical contact at all, and most of the time it would feel nice to just feel the wind on his face or the touch of someones hand. On the contrary, when he needed to protect someone it was good that he did not feel anything otherwise he would lose a fight and get beaten up. Like everything his condition had it's pros and cons, and if Tristan was completely truthful, he wished that he could be human again. It was like a longing in his chest, he had died too young, had been sent down as a guardian angel with a promise that after he had served the earth he would gain entry to heaven. He was happy about that, but he just really wanted to be alive again.
He wondered hos his family was feeling, of course he could not go to them without his glamour on and today he was feeling like he should visit them, see how his sister was coping and his mother. He knew that his death had hurt them, and it hurt him to see them so sad. Sometimes he wished that his feelings had been taken away too, that he could not feel pain or love or remorse for the people that he had loved and cared about, however it was virtually impossible for him so he had to wallow in his misery. Tristan had time on his hands, so he took the long way round, which meant going through the alleyway. It was deserted, most humans feared to walk there while most night creatures didn't like slumps like this. The alley was quite long, and it was eerie although it was day time. His ice blue eyes noticed every single detail, all the dust and dirtiness, but he was honestly not surprised. It was a deserted alley after all. Then his eyes landed on a figure.
The girl was young, and she looked really lonely and cold. She was sitting on a cardboard box, and he couldn't help but feel a pang at his heart that she might actually be living there. He looked at the state of her, the thoughts of his family fading for a bit. She sure was pretty, but the way that she sat and carried herself was kind of pathetic and he felt sorry for her. He came closer to the girl, not knowing whether she noticed him or not. He was sure if anyone had passed her they ignored her completely, but Tristan would help. Not because he was a guardian angel, but because it was in his nature. He let out a slow breath and made his way even closer to the girl, not walking past, just stopping at her feet. He had a polite and sincere smile on his face. 'Hey, do you mind if I sit with you for a bit? I feel like I could use the rest.' Tristan hoped that he wasn't scaring her.
He looked at her again, she had soft features on her face, hair that would be lovely when washed, and clothes that have been dirtied quite some time ago. He could sense that she was not human, but he did not know what she was. This was unusual for the Night world, but some species did have to survive and had nothing which was obviously what had happened to this girl. I'm Tristan. He introduced himself, while running his fingers through his blond hair out of habit. She needed someone to help her, and Tristan was the perfect person for the job, and he didn't mind one bit. Helping was so satisfactory, and he was so glad that he was not on the dark side.

Watching as the world passes by, the people with their pretty little lives, it wasn't something that made her feel any better but it didn't make her feel any worse so she continued to do it. Watching as day by day people would walk past her and act as though she was not even there even though she knew that they were seeing her. After a week of this there was someone there, someone she had never seen before. He was standing there at her feet and he was actually talking to her, like he cared or something. It wasn't a feeling she had noticed from anyone in a long time, no one had cared about her for a good four years now.
He was speaking though and it would only be proper for her to speak back to him. But how to form the words? Speech, it was something she had not used hardly at all in a very long time. Talking to herself maybe but even that was sparse. Finally with some thought she looked up at him, dirt smudged face and all and nodded her head. The only feature that was really noticeable on her was her eyes, a light grey blue but they were lacking a spark, they were dull. Yes, please sit she managed in a thick Romanian accent. It was nice having this boy here with her. It was something she missed terribly. Having someone there with you, just the mere companionship of having another body there next to you. Was he human? She couldn't really tell and it made her wonder if he knew she wasn't human and if he didn't what would happen when he found out. When her father had found out things had been bad, were still bad. He had hated her, the look of hatred in his eyes were forever burned into her memories. Her own father and mother thought her a complete and utter freak, nothing more than an animal to do experiments on.
When he sat beside her he continued with his talking. He told her his name. Why was he telling her this? Maybe he was just friendly, but friendly was foreign now, unknown. Tristan, that was who this boy was, his calling. Nice name, different, she liked it. Elizabeth she responded turning to face him but not looking him in the eyes for more than a fleet second. It was bad for a Duchess, more rather a women, to look a man in the eyes. She was not his equal, no not equal, she was below him. Men before women that was the way it was, that was the way her father taught her. Early teachings tended to stick with you for life.

If Tristan was honest, he kind of felt sorry for the girl, but he was also very curious as to why she was leading this lifestyle. Because obviously, she was living on that cardboard box, and even though his heart went tout to her, Tristan had to wonder what would drive a person to live in these sorts of conditions. He kept his smile in place, and it wasn't hard because Tristan liked to smile at people, even if it was the smallest of smiles. When she said that he could sit, he wondered why she would not look at him. Maybe a glance in his direction, then immediate downcast of eyes. He didn't know that he was so terrifying, or maybe he was embarrassing her by barging into her life on that cardboard box? Tristan would be the last to know. With a thankful look the girl's way, Tristan sat down next to her on the dirty ground, not caring that he would probably get his jeans muddy. Whatever, he could always wash them. 'Thank you.' He said to her, merely showing her that he was her friend.
He heard her name. It wasn't anything unusual but it was a lovely name, ancient, beautiful and it fitted the girl just so perfectly. 'A very beautiful name Elizabeth.' He sad, looking right at her, hoping that she would look up. He was getting anxious that she was getting scared of him, and that that was the reason why she was looking down so much. He noticed that she had an accent, and it would have seemed out of place here in the streets of America, but it suited her just fine. Tristan crossed his legs, sitting buddha style, and averted his blue eyes to the girl. His eyes were full of pity, which he was sure that she didn't want so he tried to change his expressionist to that of friendliness. He realised that he was treating her like someone that had mental issues, so he tried to seem more normal.
'Do you mind if I ask you why you're sitting here?' Tristan said with an encouraging expression on his face. When Tristan was alive, he really was quite well off. He would never have even thought of the possibility of having to sit in an alley on a cardboard box, and he was really thankful. And if Tristan was honest, he felt bad for Elizabeth. She was so pretty, and she seemed like she could achieve a lot if she just had that bit more confidence, the courage to look into someone's eyes. 'Hey, you know that you can look me in the eye. I don't bite...' Tristan trailed off with a light grin crossing his features, 'Well, only a little.' He joked, trying to get Elizabeth to at least attempt a smile. It's like Tristan had found someone to look after, she wasn't human, but she surely needed his help, and Tristan was more than willing to give it to the girl.

A person's past can live on in their heart and mind until the end of time but it is up to the person to make an effort to change their future and make things better. Eliza even knew this but the things that happened to her were still too fresh in her mind. Really all she wanted was to wake up from this horrible nightmare and have things go back to normal, but of course that was just a childish want. Losing one's family and friends and everyhing they ever knew in life had made Eliza into a shell of what she once was. Not really the most outgoing girl at any point in her life but she had been happier at least in appearance when things had been normal.
When the boy sat next to her she looked over at him and then scanned the alleyway around them. She looked like she belong here but he was too clean, too nice and too handsome to be in this alley. Someone was sure to notice him sitting here and wonder why he was wasting his time with the dirty alley girl. When he commented on her name she smiled and a little color came to her face. Thank you, I am named after my great grandmother, or so I have been told at least she replied with a soft nod before picking at the hem of her dress if you could even call it a dress. He was a nice boy, nicer than any she had ever met in her life so far at least. Boys her age in Romania, at least the ones she was allowed to socialize with, were stuck up and cared only about their money and title. Talking continually about how the throne would be theirs someday and boring stuff like that.
Now things got a little more complicated. The inevitable question was asked by the boy. Why was she here? She was silent for a moment but he filled the silence by telling her that she could look him in the eye. This confused her for a moment but she realized customs must be differnt here. I'm sorry, back home we are taught not to look a man in the eye as it is a sign of disrespect. A women should never look a man in the eye unless directed to do so she added almost like a drone. These rules had been ingrained into her mind since birth. Well I guess I am sitting here because I have no where left to go. I left my home a few months ago and stay where I can. This place, this America as I have heard it called, is different to me. I don't understand the strange ways of the world here she replied with a sigh. She felt like she could tell him her life story but she didn't want to bore him and so she stopped there and turned the floor back to him.

Sometimes it was hard for Tristan to be a guardian angel, to walk around on this earth and see the people that were worse off than him, it kind of made his heart ache. He knew that sometimes he was too nice, that sometimes he needed to be a bit more mean and tough, but even when Tristan was human, he was never mean. He had been nice, and kept to himself. Even with his peculiar appearance and piercings, he was he wasn't as confident as he looked, he had liked to just keep into a a corner and had never spoken to people he doesn't know out of his own will, it was always them that came to approach him. And not many people did, because Tristan was so focused on whatever he was doing, he just seemed like a loner, and if he was honest that was fine by him. He had a few close friends, and that was enough for him. The memories of his friends brought back the pain of not being able to go and see them, not being able to go and spend time with them. He missed them, but now he got his satisfaction and the ability to concentrate on other things by helping people like the the girl that was sitting next to him.
'And was your great grandmother as pretty as you?' Tristan asked in all seriousness. He was not trying to flirt with her, or to get her into bed like some other people would with words like that, he just knew that she would need kind words to make her feel better, because he was sure she didn't feel as confident as she should, and it wasn't like he was lying. The girl really was naturally pretty, even if she was mud stained, and quite dirty. Tristan had said it as a fact, and he hoped that little comments like that would make her feel better. If Tristan was honest, Elizabeth seemed so out of place in this dirty alleyway. It was so obvious that this was not a place that a girl like her was used to, the scenery just did not fit her, and he wondered whether she knew how dangerous this alleyway actually was? Lot's of Vampires and other creatures of the night spied their prey in these parts, and now he got worried. What if the girl would become a victim to one of them? That would be horrible, because she seemed like she had so much to give. He would have to get her out of there.
Tristan didn't say anything, and waited for her to finish. It was quite hard to catch her accent, because he was only used to hearing people with a similar accent to his own. He listened very intently, looking at her, showing her that he was definitely paying attention, that he cared. He wondered where she was from. She seemed to have these ancient views of me, that men were of the higher class and had so much more power over women, that they weren't even able to look at them in the eye. 'Well, Elizabeth, here you can more than look a man in the eye. They don't overpower you, you have as much power as they do, you have freedom from being their puppets.' Tristan said that with a very serious expression on his face, because he was sure that back where she came from she would have very little freedom with men, he hoped that knowing that she had this freedom would make her happy.
'May I ask where are you from Elizabeth?' He ask softly, making sure that he used her name, making sure that she knew that he was serious, and wouldn't just leave her there. 'And also, you don't have to answer this, but why did you leave home? He hoped that she would answer. That she would tell him the truth, because Tristan was suspecting that in where she came from nothing other than human was accepted, and she wasn't human, although he didn't know what race she was. Maybe she could sense that Tristan wasn't human either, because people of the night just gave off that kid of atmosphere, like they were something more surreal than meets the eye. He wished to know what species she was, and why she had left, but he would not force any answers out of her which she did not want share.

Compliments, another thing that she was very unfamiliar with. No one had ever complimented her for any reason except maybe her brother or sister. Never had she gotten a compliment from someone that she didn't even know at all. But now this boy had called her pretty, well in a way he had. I'm not sure, maybe. I never met her she replied with a small smile. The first smile she had felt grace her lips in a very long time. It had probably been about three years since she had felt the urge to smile at anything at all ever since she had been sent to the facility.
I guess there really is a lot that I need to learn about this country she replied with a nod when he meantioned that here she was not lesser than a man but rather just the same. Women and men were equal here apparently. That was an odd concept indeed especially for a girl of her customs. But it was something that seemed nice and something she could get used to. It would probably be nice not having to constantly look down and act like a lesser being, not that it was going to be an easy habit to break but at least now she knew how things worked here. She was pleased and thankful that this boy had decided to stop and talk to her, he had already brightened her mood at least a little bit and he was helping her understand this new world.
Then the inevitable came out, he wanted to know where she was from and why she had left. Great. For some reason she felt like lieing to him would be bad, like he was someone she could trust no matter what. So this one time she decided that it was time to tell someone why she had left, it was time to confide in someone and let them help her deal with everything that she was feeling. I'm from Bucharest, Romania. My family is very important there, my father being the Duke she replied looking up at him with her first smudged face. She hadn't noticed before but he had the appearance of an angel or at least what she could imagine an angel to look like. My life was good until I was thirteen years old. When I turned thirteen I shifted for the first time, I tried to hide it by my father found out somehow and sent me away to a facility to find out what I was. I was there for three years and was faced with three years of testing and experiments. The doctors there wanted to know exactly what made me what I was, what made me tick. I finally was able to get away but in doing so I had to leave my entire family and everyone that I ever knew behind. I thought coming here would be far anough away from my father because I knew he will send people out to find me. He can't have his little freak Duchessa daughter running around she said this part with sarcasm and hatred in her voice. Her father had become nothing to her now, she had no love for him anymore.
All she could hope now was that this boy could help her, that he would help her.

Her smile was small, but what a change it made to her face. Usually, when a girl smiles it's only natural, but he was glad that Elizabeth was smiling, even if it was the tiniest of smiles, because he was pretty sure that she hadn't smiled in a while, and he was glad it it was him who could put it on her. Tristan shifted positions then, crossing his legs Indian style to make himself more comfortable. He liked sitting there, just talking to the girl. It was definitely a nice change from most of his others encounters with other species, for example whenever he spoke to Asher there was hate sent his way, and most people were on the dark side so they hated him, but this girl seemed so clueless about the war, but yet she was one of them, and it was such a refreshing change. Someone who was not with him, nor against him, though now that she would be pulled into the war, he would try and make sure that she was on his side, but he would mention a thing about it no. First, he had to help her get her life back, but he would do that later, he liked just sitting there, it was a nice refreshing change.
"It's not as hard as it seems, all you need to do is think higher of yourself and you will fit right in. Confidence is the key." Tristan said encouragingly. Elizabeth seemed to have such low self esteem that he kind of felt pity for her. He didn't really know what the customs are like where she comes from, but he can clearly see that they were different, where women were treated as lesser beings. He didn't know where it was, but he could see that it was old fashioned, because not many people int he twenty-first century had customs like that, most people had confidence and were't afraid to look men in the eye if they were women. Maybe only servants for big mansions who just obeyed rules, but then dissed their masters behind their backs to other servants, but Elizabeth didn't seem like a girl that would do that, but maybe he was wrong. But he didn't really know what to think, he didn't have much to work with yet, but he was going to make sure he did get more.
He was kind of surprised that she was telling him as much as she was. He could tell it was the truth, because a person that lived on a cardboard box in an alleyway didn't really have anything to hide, and Tristan hoped that he was giving off an impression that he was going to help her. He was looking at her, showing her that he was listening as she explained that she was from Romania and that her father was a Duke. So, now he kind of understood where her customs came from, because he knew dukes to be old fashioned, if the one in Russia was anything to go by. He was surprised that she had chosen America to run to though, maybe because America was so big, and easy place to hide in where no one knows you, and no one really cares. Tristan cared though. Maybe more than he should, because most people were just too ungrateful.
Tristan listened to her tale with concern clouding his face as his eyes narrowed. It was so horrible. Not that she was a shapeshifter, but that she had to endure three years of experimenting. Tristan was sure that she could see the distaste on his face, but he hoped she didn't think that it was towards her, because it wasn't. And he didn't want her to think that she was on her own. "Here, we have a whole community or people like you, and me, that humans don't know about. And we like to keep it that way, because we don't want what happened to you happening here. So, you are not alone, and America really is a big place, so there's only a very slight chance that your father will find you." Tristan said, a reassuring smile on his face, he put one of his white hands on top of her dirty ones but he didn't care. Of course, Tristan could not feel the touch, but he knew that she could, and he hoped that she was reassured, if only a little.

Humans didn't know of the existance of them? Wait didn't know about them...so that meant that this boy that was sitting here talking to her must not be human either. But she didn't know what he was either and figured it would be rude to ask. I mean it wasn't like it seemed proper to walk around and be like hello what are you? Sounded pretty rude to her and so it was a question that she kept to herself. If he felt the need to tell her what he was then he could but if not then oh well. She would learn about everything eventually, it didn't have to be right now, right here.
I will take your word for it, and give it a try she replied when he told her that confidence was the key to fitting into this world. This place seemed so much better in her eyes, it was safer. All she could hope was that it was far enough away and big enough that she would be able to stay mostly hidden from anyone looking to find her. Eliza felt an overwhelming sense of safety when this boy was around her, this Tristan. He had a light about him, something she couldn't quite place but he was special and she could tell that he wasnt just special to her, he was something bigger.
What else is out there? I mean you said that the humans don't know about you and me, but you aren't like me. If it isn't too forward might I ask what are you? she asked with a confused look on her face. She was surprised enough when she had discovered what she was, but now there was the possibility that there were other things out there besides her. Not only could people turn into animals but there was other types of people as well. Talk about a crazy world and that didn't exactly make a whole lot of sense.
I hope my father never finds me. But I can't imagine him coming to America to search for me for a while at least. He always had the nastiest things to say about this country, talking always of its filth and horrible people. That is why I came here, I figured it would be the best place. What better place to come than the place you know your father would dispise to come to. I know he will put it off until last thinking I would never chance coming to the States she replied. Sure this place was different but it was by no means horrible and so far she quite liked this place. It made it easy to blend in and disappear.

He was surprised that she trusted him so easily, after all, he was a stranger. However, he was sure that she hadn't had much good in her life since she ran away, so by trusting him she really didn't have that much to lose. "It will be worth it in the end. You'll feel so much better about yourself if you have that confidence." Tristan was surely speaking from experience. When he was human he had like no confidence at all. He was shy and quiet and let people push him around. But he knew that if he wanted to survive int he world of high school, he had to pull his confidence out of somewhere, is he didn't want to get completely trampled on. He only understood that after he died, so not it was too late, but he could still use it in the 'real world' because you can't be shy or quiet when you are being a guardian to someone. It's just impossible really.
Tristan cracked a smile and a chuckle. He had forgotten that she wouldn't know anything at all about the real world, and he would take it upon himself to teach her of it. "Well, what you knew until you were changed is what we call the 'human world' but there's so much more. The world that you and I live in, it's called the 'real world' the one that people call myth, but actually exists without humans knowing about it. There are many species, your species are called shapeshifters, but there are vampires, werewolves, faeries, immortals, mermaids even firetamers. Some of these species are dark and evil, but some are good. I'm not going to go into that now, but I'm on the good side. I'm actually... uh... a guardian angel." Tristan was actually rather reluctant to tell her of his species, because he was afraid that she would think that he took it as his 'duty' to help her, which was not the case, Tristan wanted to help her himself, nothing to do with his species.
Tristan feigned shock on his face. "How could he? This place is filled with nothing but happiness and cleanliness and sunshine." He laughed out loud, because her father was quite right. The states were quite dirty, but nothing as bad as Elizabeth's father thinks. "Well, at least you know that you are now safe, and that he wont come knocking for you. If he does, there are places here you can run and hide, places that would get you taken in and look after you, with the saviors. Tristan said seriously, because he knew that they would help. As long as Elizabeth didn't turn on them, they would help and keep her safe from the scientists. As much fun as Tristan was having taking to her, he forgot to take on thing into consideration. She must be quite hungry.
Abruptly, he stood up, and looked down at her. "Sit here and wait for one minute. Do not move. I'll be right back, I promise." He said hoping that she'd believe him, and ran off around the corner where he knew a McDonald's was. He ordered a burger and large fries and coke for her, paid for it, and started walking back. He thought about what it must be like living on the streets. He didn't really want to imagine it, so he hurried up with the food. When he came back, he flashed a grin and gave her the bag. "Eat up!" Tristan said with a smile, and sat down again next to the girl.

So confidence really was key, she never would have thought about that. She knew that in her country the men had confidence but a confident female was a rare site and they never lasted long if they were around. To put it lightly the men at the palace didn't like their women to have opinions, they wanted good little wives that had children and did as they were told. Of course there were working women out in the fields but Eliza never really saw them. The only other working women she had seen were the servents, cooks and nannys. Even then those working women were still the keep your head down and mouth shut type of women. Well thank you again she replied with another small smile.
Hearing about all of the other types of beings out there was mind blowing. So there wasn't only shapeshifters like herself but so many others. Firetamers? Angels? Vampires? It was like one of her childhood stories come to life. Her brother had always loved to scare her with scary stories about the creatures of the night but she had never thought that they could be real. It was kind of nerve-racking to find out that the creepy crawlies that go bump in the night were real, well some of them were at least. On top of that there was good and evil? This was a lot to take in all at once. She had no idea that she was now supposed to be on a specific side and that being a good person could mean she would be a target for the not so good people. Great, life just got a little more complicated that was for sure.
Wow, I would have never though that all of this was possible. But I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised I never thought I would be something different. I grew up my whole life believing I would turn sixteen and be married off to some young prince somewhere. I grew up destined to be a wife and mother and now I don't even know what I am supposed to be or do she said this last part with a little scoofing laugh. It was kind of an odd feeling not knowing what your future would hold anymore. When you are raised as a princess you really aren't used to making decisions for yourself. I don't even really know how to proceed with life. I have never had to decide my own path she added with a slightly concerned and thoughtful look.
Well I am glad that I am free of one problem at least she replied meaning that she was free of her father for now. It was indeed nice to not have to worry about impressing him and being the perfect child that he expected. Sure being raised as a rich young child could be nice but it wasn't without its downfalls. Being a Duchesse meant if you messed up at all everyone would know. When she heard that he was a guardian angel she had to smile Well that is ironic, so your job is to help people? she asked I can't say I'm not glad you came along. You are the nicest person I have ever met and I appreciate it.
Elizabeth nodded when Tristan told her to stay put and watching as he jumped up and disappeared around the corner. She was curious as to where he was going but did as she was told and stayed sitting where he had found her, where she had been sitting the last few days actually. It occured to her that she looked horrible, she was surprised he was even talking to her, she looked like a complete bum...which made sense she supposed. When he arrived back with a bag of food and a drink she smiled at him and accepted the food. She was in fact starving and took the food with great appreciation. When she opened the burger she thought a moment and then removed the meat patty from the middle and set it on the wrapper before eating the rest of the burger. Sorry I don't eat meat she replied with a small laugh and took a drink of the soda. The food was good on her empty stomach, but she was careful not to eat to fast as to not make herself sick.
