Parties were so boring, especially when you were the youngest one there. Two families. One called the Wolfe's and the other called the Callahan's always put on a nice Christmas part around this time. The large house was warm so she was able to take off that heavy coat her mother made her wear. The little girl with her arms crossed stared out the window as the snow fell over the house, parties were so boring when you were simply nine years old and the only child in the house that was under the age of 12. All the other kids had a few years on her, they ignored her for the most part since they thought she was a little child, a child who just wanted to play with toys and do nothing. That wasn't October at all; the girl loved a good video game and well games in general. She wasn't fond of the pink Barbie's dolls she was given almost every year and when she got them she totally destroyed them, cut their hair all short or put bleach in their hair, dress them up different than they pink labels on the box expected them. Yeah, October was a visionary.
The girl grumbled softly as she messed with the head band in her hair, her mother said it was nice and made her look more girly. Not that October wasn't girly; she was just her own kind of girly. The snow was falling lightly, beautifully around the fake pale light reindeer that seemed to cover most of the neighborhood. It was almost magical, but her magic filled young thoughts were interrupted by a rough grip to her shoulder and her mother's stern voice. "What are you doing here alone? You know better." She said and crossed her arms over her chest; the woman was wearing a scream business suit that seemed almost too formal for such an occasion. October stayed quiet, her mother's glare was enough to send people into a crying fit, but the girl was use to it. "Go downstairs and play with the other kids, and behave." She said sternly and the little girl did as she was told.
October slowly walked down the basement steps and peeked down them to look at all the boys playing video games and such. She tensed a little bit and bit her lower lip, her large blue eyes watching with interest at them. Some were her cousin's some where the Callahan's boys, but over all they were much older than her. Again she was the baby. Slowly she walked downstairs, but she was stopped by her cousin Tod's voice. The boys were playing Mario Kart and he was losing something awful. He glared at her and rolled his eyes. "Go away October, this isn't for babies." He snapped. The girl fidgeted and bit her lower lip harder, tears threatening to coat her face already. "Mommy said I had to come down and play with you." She said sternly, to the boy. All of them seemed like their game was less important now since the girl wanted to be stubborn. Tod sneered a little bit but then smiled. "Fine here." He said quickly and tossed the game controller at her, which smacked her right in the head. It fell to the ground and the girl didn't move, not yet. She stared at him as tears ran down her cheeks and she quickly turned and ran back upstairs, into the dinning room and under a table. No one could see her and she could cry in silence. She hated parties.

i'll be there when you're insecure i’ll be your superman when there’s no one left to save you Aaron sighed as his mother rambled on about how he had to be on his best behavior today when they arrived at the party. He didn’t know whose house they were going to this time because it changed every year. It was cold, but he was too prideful to wear a heavy jacket, and told his mom he could wear whatever he wanted. Since he had insisted on it, she let him go tonight with the stupid khaki pants he was forced to wear, as well as a green button up that made him itch, and a light jacket. He hated how his mom always made him dress up for this kind of stuff. He was thirteen, he didn’t need to be told what to wear. Besides, the other kids didn’t have to wear stupid itchy clothes. Aaron sighed again and promised his mom that he would be on his best behavior. Jesse Lynn promised the same.
When they pulled up into the driveway, he quickly got out of the car, ready to see all of his friends. Some of the kids that would be here he had known since forever, and they all got along pretty well. Except he never really got along with one kid. He tried his best to stay far away from him though. Even though Aaron had never done anything to hurt his sister, October, Colt never liked him. He hadn’t a clue as to why, but as long as he didn’t say anything to him, he was fine. Aaron played nice with everyone else, and they were all cool.
Aaron threw open the door and unzipped his jacket. To his right he saw Toby sitting by the window, but before he could even say hi, he was greeted by a pack of boys. He rushed downstairs with them all and talked about the new Playstation he had gotten, or rather, will be getting for Christmas. He had found his parents hiding place for where all of his and Jesse Lynn’s presents were and he found that along with a few games to go with it. He went on about it and the new comics he was getting.
He was in the middle of an epic battle in Mario Kart with Tod when Tober came downstairs. He smiled at her, but it faded when her cousin spoke. then he threw the remote at her and watched as she began to cry. When she ran away, Aaron looked at him. “That was really mean. You don’t have to be such a jerk to her, jeez.” He said. Tod laughed and teased Aaron saying, “Ooooo! Someone has a crush!” Aaron rolled his eyes and walked away saying over his shoulder, “Grow up, man. Don’t be such a jerk.” He walked away still shaking his head to the boys laughing. Sometimes he really didn’t like how mean Tod could be. It wasn’t like Toby had done anything wrong. And she was better than him at video games, too!
Aaron searched through the whole house looking for her. He couldn’t find her anywhere. When his mom asked him what he was doing, he told her they were playing a game. He looked upstairs in all of the bedrooms, downstairs in the kitchen where he got yelled at cause “he was in the way”, and finally he looked in the dining room. “Toby, are you here?” he asked almost ready to just go back downstairs to play more games.

She sat there and sniffled a little bit; she rubbed her eyes with her tiny hands and growled softly when something itchy began to push behind her ears. That stupid bow. The girl almost in a fit of rage threw the bow off her head and watched it crash into the flood, making a metal like clang sound. She frowned a little bit and let her long ebony hair just fall around her face, her ice blue eyes staring at her hands. That's when she heard someone calling for her, or one of her many nicknames. Personally her favorite was "Tober" and she only let a special few call her by that, like her older brother and some of her friends. That was about it. She peeked out from under the table and looked at the boy, Aaron. She knew him well sort of. He had a little sister a few months older than herself that she often played with, she liked Jesse Lynn, but Aaron never really paid much mind to her.
"Tober. Call me Tober. Toby makes me sound like a doggy." She was sort of a doggy? In the fact that she was a werewolf. The nine year old slowly crawled back under the table again and clicked her shoes together. She wished Colt was there but he was with some friends tonight, the oldest male seeming to want to be alone more and more these days and away from their parents. She resumed the position from before and just stared at the ground, she had a bit of a headache from the controller clonking her head but for the most part she was okay. In truth, the girl was slowly growing more and more anti-social by the second. As a child you wouldn't expect to know when she was glaring at you in an honestly hateful way, or when she was silently calling you an idiot. She was nine, and nine year olds didn't do that. But October did.
You never saw the girl's smile or her true nature unless she felt comfortable enough with you, and only Colt ever saw her bubbles and her rainbows. Everyone else got a cold chilly feeling. It was because she didn't trust people easily, maybe that was a werewolf thing and everyone else was foreign to her but she just couldn't bring herself to trust someone she just met. Aaron she had known since forever, but he too was subject to her chilly ways. Even though she knew he'd seen her smile and be happy with his sister. That was very different, Jesse Lynn was her age and they could relate to many things. Aaron was older and more mature so they couldn't relate so much. It didn't matter to her though since she figured he would leave her be.

i'll be there when you're insecure i’ll be your superman when there’s no one left to save you Aaron laughed when he finally heard her voice. He was glad he had finally found her. Really, he just wanted to make sure she was okay. He dropped to his knees and stared at her. “Why are you under the table?” he asked curiously. He smiled trying to make her feel at least a little better. She didn’t want to be called Toby, but he thought it was nice and nothing like a dog’s name. it was more of a boy’s name than anything. October wasn’t really a name for anyone. It was a month of the year, and actually a really random one to name a kid. He had met a few Aprils and a Junes, but never another October. He guessed it was just originality instead of being a regular name like everyone else’s. “I think Toby is pretty.” He said and shrugged.
He stayed behind the blockade of chairs that were between him and Tober. He knew she never really liked him, or at least that’s how he felt. He wasn’t really sure why, but the Wolfe kids didn’t like him. he wondered if he had said something to one of them before and they just never really cared to say something so they both just stayed away from him. he didn’t favor being disliked. It kind of hurt his feelings. He sat on his behind and crossed his legs so that he was sitting Indian Style. He folded his hands and rested them in his lap. “How come you don’t like me?” he asked bluntly.
Aaron was a rather blunt kid. He didn’t like to tip toe around things. When he wanted to know something, and he had the opportunity, he simply just flat out asked the question that would get him the answer. He had pretty much always been that way, too, not really caring how his words could effect a situation. He was still just a kid, so he had the freedom to do be so frank. Aaron sighed and turned his feet and leaned over to the side, so he could comfortable rest on his stomach and be eye-level with Tober instead of having to hunch down just to see her. He wondered if she would ever talk to him like she did when she was with his little sister.
Aaron had witnessed first-hand that Tober was nice. But for some reason, that affection was never thrown Aaron’s way. He wouldn’t have minded otherwise, but he had just stood up for her! He didn’t care if she was younger than him, she was still human, and anyone’s feelings would be hurt if someone threw a remote control at their head. It simply wasn’t right to do that to someone, no matter how much they disliked them. Well, hopefully he would figure out what was wrong with him so he could at least try to be better.

Why was she under the table? It was clear wasn't it! She was hiding from everyone, the little girl's face fell and she looked at her hands again. Her voice was barely above a whisper. "Cause no one likes me..." She said softly to him, admitting that she was convinced none of the older kids liked her. As a child that was a major blow. Almost earth shattering for someone so young to think such a think. Nine year olds weren't supposed to worry about being liked; they were supposed to worry about what toys they were getting for Christmas. The little girl looked at him as he lied down beside her and slowly and lied down too, looking through the barriers of the chairs and she smiled at him. Aaron was silly.
October giggled a bit and smiles warmly at him, she thought the question was funny. "I do like you! You don't like me..." She sounded very sad, again like earth shattering sad. Slowly she moved closer and moved the chairs away from the table, motioning him to crawl under also. When he did, the little girl threw her arms around his neck and hugged him tight. She was a lot smaller than him so she was almost off the ground when she hugged him. She liked Aaron, a lot. But he was always with his friends whenever she came over to play with his sister; he acted like she was just a baby.
She pulled back slightly and looked up at him with another warm smile. That smile she rarely gave anyone, it was warm and sunny and filled with bubbles and rainbows. That smiled she noticed could melt even the coldest person's heart, that was just the personality of October. Warm and fuzzy, the coldness she sometimes showed wasn't her at all. Sadly she had no other choice to be like that. From the other room, she heard someone stomp into the dining room. "October?!" Her mother's voice called. The little girl clung tighter to Aaron. She didn't want to go back out and find her mother; surely Tod had already said something about how October did something to him. That's what it was.
"Aaron, can we go outside...? I want to go outside..." She asked and looked at the older male as the women's feet began to click out of the dining room. That's all she wanted, was to play in the snow for the rest of the night. She was never allowed to play in the snow; her mother said only boy's play in the icky snow. But snow wasn't icky! It was magical. Her face was determined and it didn't matter if he said no or not. She wanted to go outside and play with Aaron.

i'll be there when you're insecure i’ll be your superman when there’s no one left to save you Aaron was a really sweet kid. He loved to help people. He always had loved sticking up for the underdogs of the world. If there weren’t people out there like Aaron, then the girls like Toby would be helpless and wouldn’t have a prayer in the cruel world that awaited them. Not that the young boy would know much about the cruel world yet, but he still liked to think that he knew more than the girl sitting before him. Aaron frowned at Toby’s words. He couldn’t believe that no one liked the girl. First of all, he liked her well enough. Not that he had talked very much to her. But he did know that she was better at video games than her brother or cousins. Sometimes her cousins could be really mean to their little cousin. He didn’t think it was right to be mean to someone just because they were girls or that they were nine years old. It was especially wrong to throw a remote at her head. He was still pretty mad at Todd.
He had asked the girl why she didn’t like him, but she said that she did, but that he didn’t like her. “Well… I-I do like you…” he said with a little blush. She should know that he did just by the way he stood up for her. He didn’t want her to think that he didn’t like her, because then she would think she was alone in the world. “Toby, you know I’ll always be your friend.” He said with a toothy grin that showed a missing front tooth. In return, Toby smiled back. It was a smile he had never seen before, and another blush came over him. He blinked and giggled a little. He was glad that she understood now that she wouldn’t be alone. He was her friend no matter what, and he would help defend her against her butthead cousins when her scary brother wasn’t around.
As the couple gave a hug to the other, a pair of feet walked into the dining room. He could tell by the way that Toby clung to him just a little tighter that she didn’t want him to say anything. He waited until her mother was finally out of the room to look back at the young girl beside him. Aaron looked into her hopeful eyes when she asked if they could go outside and play. He smiled brightly at her and nodded. “Sure. I’ll go grab out jackets. Meet me at the front, okay?” he said. Aaron gave her a final squeeze and exited from under the table.
He walked to the coat closet nonchalantly and grabbed their jackets. No one seemed to notice the boy, and he grinned mischievously. He tip toed to the front door where Toby was to be waiting for him. He knew how strict her mom was, so he had to hide her coat inside his in case she caught him. She didn’t want to be caught in her path. Aaron waited at the front door for Toby, and thought of some things that they could do. Perhaps make a snowman, or snow angels. He hadn’t done that in forever. It would be nice to do it with a new friend.
