OVERALL
Atlas is just one of those guys that people tend to like. He’s funny and loud and is just one of those people who genuinely loves life. He doesn’t get into fights that often and when he does, he’s always the first person to apologize. That doesn’t mean that he’s one to walk over though. The second you mess with one of his loved ones, expect a pawful of claw in your face. He’s one of the most loyal people you’ll ever meet. He’s the one girls come to when their boyfriends break up with. The one you call at three in the morning because you feel alone. He’ll fight for his friends till his last breath
There’s also the side of his personality that he tries his best to hide from the outside world, the brokenness that gnaws at the inside of his stomach at night, the pure, uncensored rage he has toward those who have stolen away the people he loves most… the vampires. Every time he sees one of those fowl, blood thirsting fiends he has to suppress the urge to transform and kill it on the spot. Atlas doesn’t believe in a “good vampire.” They’re all untrustworthy and evil. He makes sure to carry a wooden stake with him wherever he goes.

OVERALL
Lauren and Jason O’Dair were both celebrated scientist. Lauren in the field of zoology and Jason in biology. Lauren had received a huge grant to study the endangered species in the Pacific islands and Jason was on the road to a Nobel Prize. However, behind their facade of successful professionals, they were also two of the most powerful shifters of their day and had been fighting at the forefronts of the small battles that have developed over the past two decades into the war being fought today. They were leaders in the fight for human’s freedom and the only thing that stopped them was the birth of a baby boy in the hottest October in recorded history. In order to keep they’re new family safe, Jason and Lauren moved from New York City to Gulf Shores, Alabama. While they would infrequently travel back to see how things were progressing, they had mostly given up that life to fight the challenges of parenthood.
Atlas O’Dair had a relatively normal childhood. His parents were professors at The University of Southern Alabama. The only thing that made him stand out was his athletic ability that surpassed his peers by miles. He could run faster and farther than anyone in his grade and most of the adults he knew. Atlas was also extremely strong. None of this really passed him until he was about ten years old. Atlas was four when his twin brothers were born and they had just gotten to the age where their parents would let them go play in the back yard by themselves. The back of the house faced woods with a small swamp, but the worst kind of animal to come out of it was a swarm of mosquitoes during the summertime. The three boys were playing hide-and-go-seek, and it was Atlas’s turn to count, but before he could finish counting, he heard a terrified scream come from the woods. He sprinted through the trees to find Bishop face to face with a 10 ft. alligator. Ever since they were born, Atlas had felt so protective of his brothers. It was his responsibility to keep them safe. He went through the specials he had seen on Animal Planet, but the one that kept repeating in his mind was one of a lion snatching a crocodile out of the water with its mouth. This was of no help. His teeth looked nothing like that of a lion. He looked at his six year old and saw the desperation in his eyes as the beast crept forward. Anger rushed through Atlas’s veins. Then, he felt the most excruciating pain he ever had. It was if his bones were all breaking at once. His muscles shifted to wrap around the newly formed skeletal system and where a young boy once stood was now a lion. Not a fully matured adult lion, but just close enough to take down the alligator. It was so strange for him to move as a lion did, but his instincts told him to go straight for the alligator’s throat. Once, his brother was safe, fatigue took over and Atlas felt his new body fall to the ground and transform back into his human form.
The next thing he remembered was waking up in his bed with his mother gripped onto his hand as if she were afraid that Atlas would have passed any second. He told his mother about a strange dream he had of saving Bishop from an alligator by turning into a lion. Atlas’s father came into the room near the end of the story, extremely grateful that his son was alive. They now, difficulty, explained to Atlas the explanation that they prayed would never have had to be told. They discussed that the stories they used to tell him when he was younger were not actually myth. The beings in those fables were all real, and Atlas was what people in that world called a “shape shifter.”
Atlas spent the next 8 years going on “camping trips” with his dad that were really just the two of them going to an old cabin to help develop his shifting ability. The pain from shifting seemed unbearable at first, but it slowly became more routine. Also, he began running. He found that the better shape he was in, the easier it was to shift. His father explained that since his first shift was into a lion, that would always be the easiest animal to shift into, but in times of extreme need, he could potentially change into something else. After high school, Atlas got a track scholarship at an Ivy League scholarship on the east coast. He spent the entirety of his senior year arguing with his parents that he would be safe. They worried that after all these years, the war had developed severely, but Atlas was persistent and his parents finally agreed.
Atlas spent his first year at college as most do, partying. He rushed for the fraternity his father was in. His being gay never really effected relationships he had. It was rare that he was never hassled for it, but perhaps people were intimidated by the fact that he could bench press more than most wrestlers. He enjoyed college, and barely noticed the great war that his parents so feared for him. There were a few incidences of course. A run in with a werewolf or a ghost sighting were nothing out of the ordinary, but nothing big. The hardest thing was that he couldn’t shift as often as he wanted to. The rumor of a lion running around campus could have prompted some negative consequences.
Then, catastrophe struck. The week before finals, he was called into the dean’s office where he was told that his parents had been murdered. Atlas’s life was flipped upside down. He was at the airport in fifteen minutes, and home that evening. His world had collapsed around him. His parents were two of the most pleasant people on the face of this planet. Who would kill them? Questions flooded his mind. After the funeral, one of his parent’s friends came to give their condolences. He had seen this friend at certain holidays. They always sent cards to the boys on their birthday and letters to his parents that were always kept a mystery. Atlas listened as he told him about his parents fight for humans in the war. To Atlas, all this information was new. He had never even seen his father raise his voice, how could he have been this epic hero in the war against darkness? The friend also told Atlas that a coven of vampires had a bounty on Atlas’s parents. While they had stopped fighting 18 years before, they were still a threat to the dark side and couldn’t be left to live. Atlas was filled with fury. He would destroy those who ripped apart his family. He went back to school, but has been fighting on the forefronts since.

Rays of sun began to overcome the New England trees. The day had come to life. Atlas finished stretching and bent down to retie his shoe. They had a knack of coming untied during his runs. It was overtly annoying to look down and see one of his shoe strings flapping around, waiting to be tripped over. He changed the mode on his watch to display a stop watch and popped his neck muscles. Atlas's mother always told him that popping joints was a terrible habit, bit the release of air seemed to cool his body down. He stared forward feeling his eyes change from their grey-green orbs to larger golden ones he took in his lion form. He liked to change eyesight while running. It made his vision more keen, and gave him just enough animalistic instinct to continue running through times of exhaustion. He listened as the world changed from night to day. Hearing the sounds of day rejoining the world, he began to jog forward. His breath turned into a steady rhythm in through your nose, out through your mouth. He thought to himself. His feet hit the ground with barely any sound, heel to toe. He remembered all the technique his track coaches had taught him. The small tips and tricks that kept stamina going for the crucial minutes needed in competition. Luckily for Atlas, as long as he was going against a human was usually in for an easy win. He had the speed of a lion, it was kind of a no brainer.
As the spring air filled his lungs, Atlas remembered the time his family had visited England one spring. His father had a seminar that matched up perfectly with everyone's schedules, so they made a trip out of it. He was 16 and his brothers were 12, so his mother still walked them around. They toured all of the sites, went to galleries and just had an amazing time. It was glorious, but then he smelled it. The scent that had haunted so many of his dreams. The stench that his parents had smelt right before they were killed... vampire. Atlas clenched his teeth as he felt his bones begin to break and mend into the skeleton of his lion form. He had grown into a fully developed lion, with a deep orange mane. Twisting around, he looked for the source of the smell, letting out a terrifying roar.
