Rowan stared at her phone as she sat in front of the library. Her parents having forgotten to pick her up, and leaving to go on their special date night. As nice as that was, she would have preferred to have been picked up and dropped off where ever. She sighed softly and looked over the stack of books she’d gotten for some fun reading, also to get her ready for next year. She’d be a junior and that meant harder classes, but she felt ready. The girl texted her mother about who was coming to get her and after a moment the reply finally came. Damon. Rowan nodded slowly and asked her mother if they told him he had to come get her. Thankfully they did, now it was just up to the older man to show up. Unless he forgot her too like their parents did.
She hadn’t seen her brother in a few days, although they spoke often she hadn’t actually made eye contact with him in forever. She wanted to ask what he’d been up too, but half of her already knew. As his little sister she could see through his ways easily, but she’d never call him out on it. She wasn’t that kind of sister, he was content with his life and that made her happy. The girl sighed a little bit and looked at her phone when it buzzed again. Since her parents didn’t know what time they’d be back they also asked Damon to let her stay with him. If this war hadn’t started and the world was a calmer place, she knew they’d let her stay home alone. However, this was no longer the case.
She wasn’t allowed to leave the house alone, unless she was in view of a lot of people. So the library was okay, since everyone there was silent and anything to loud would be noticed right away. Even staying at her own home was becoming an issue. Her family had every right to be worried though considering what was going on and what happened, but half of her wished they’d lighten up a bit. Then reality would come crashing down and she remembered it was for the best, and for her own safety. Rowan rubbed the back of her neck and wiggled as she sat on the sidewalk in front of the library. The sun was just starting to go down and people were leaving the library for the day.
Spending the night with her elder brother was going to be a rare treat though. She wondered if she ruined any of his plans for the night. Guilt poked at her stomach a bit and she chewed on the inside of her cheek. She’d have to apologize. Anything would be better than to babysit a sixteen-year-old girl, right? Her chin rested on her knees as she pulled the closer to her chest. She fiddled around with her backpack that contained some extra clothes since she assumed she would be staying with someone tonight anyway. Her parents were nothing if not predictable. It was the waiting the girl disliked doing. She felt awkward being looked at by people who drove by as well as walked in and out of the glass doors.
The streetlights flickered on and a groan escaped her. Not knowing if moving was the best idea, she wiggled away from their direct light so she could see past the halo of florescent lighting. After a while she couldn’t see any more cars on the road. This would either make the task of looking for her brother’s car easier or more nerve wracking. With all the talk their family had been doing about their situation she began to have more anxiety fill in her chest. They were so worried about her being alone, that now she too was scared to be alone. Rowan took in a deep breath and waited.
Soon she spotted a car she knew all to well. She wanted to smile but a playful scowl took over her face. Rowan never really got angry so her scowl was more like a kicked puppy rather than an upset teenager. “You sir, are late. I’m fining you a large fry, bacon cheese burger and a vanilla milkshake.” She said loudly as she walked over to the car door to get in.
