For example, Eleyna’s fingers felt unusually twitchy, and she walked around in silence. Normally, she would walk around with her head high and a sort of joy that just came naturally. At that moment, as she was getting ready for her dinner date, she had a hard time trying to get her earrings in. The dress wasn’t exactly super formal complete with sparkles and diamonds like at the winter ball a few weeks ago. But it was nowhere near casual. A little nicer than semi-casual, she would say. Her jewelry dressed up her simple day dress and her hair was curled. Much like the way it was when she was in Rome and there wasn’t a lot of options for hair like there was now. Eleyna was a little worried about making herself look much like she had done in Rome, but for the purposes of the night, it may be the last chance she’d get with him.
She called on this dinner date with Marcus because she hated not knowing. Eleyna despised just ‘seeing what happened’ or seeing how it worked out. For her, that was a waste of time. She had spent nights thinking about it too much. It let too much time for her mind to ponder. All these years, she had dreamed of the day that she would return to Marcus in whatever way that was. Now that he was here, she felt like wasting time playing this little game of not knowing was making her upset. She was hunting the other night and she had missed at least three deer. Not a very good thing on her record. Not only was she hungry, but she was frustrated. It was a horrible combination. The only reason she had made it through the night was one of the deer was already injured. That shouldn’t have been a reason for a kill. Eleyna was so annoyed at herself that she decided it was time to really start making this difference.
Despite the seriousness she set it up with, she was feeling almost giddy at the thought of a first date with Marcus. Real first ‘date’. They hadn’t exactly gotten very many opportunities in Rome. She was always stuck in the household taking care of things and he was always training or recovering. Sneaking away to see him was the closest they had really gotten, but being seen together in public would have been tragic. Although if she knew what was going to happen anyway, she might have acted differently. It was just, after all this time… she had been told he was dead. Eleyna had been told Marcus was killed by another she-vampire who took pleasure in causing harm to others. They also had their reunion a couple of months ago. Eleyna about killed her, and she hadn’t seen the dark skinned vampire since. Perhaps the vampire heard of Marcus’ return. Whatever it was, Eleyna was glad she was lying. The night with Marcus had been absolutely blissful. They danced all night, dubbing they should get together and exchange stories some time where they didn’t have to move through people.
Though she was excited, her nervous actions came from not knowing how tonight was going to end. It could have gone just about any other way. She doubted they would hate each other by the end of the evening. No matter what happened, she could never hate Marcus. She was expecting him to say there had been at least one other woman in his life. Eleyna had, too, tried her best to get over the man she would never see again. It had failed. Multiple times. After knowing she was kidding herself, she stopped. She had no idea what he had done. He may have kindly and in his most gentleman way announce times have changed. Both of them needed to accept that. It wasn’t the same on his end or something. She had to prepare herself for that answer. Gods, it was going to be hard. She pulled on her necklace, looking at herself one last time in the mirror. Eleyna noticed she appeared calm except for her frightened blue eyes. Taking deep breath, she tried to change it, thinking solely on seeing Marcus again. A smile crept on her lips. Yes, she was ready.
Most occasions would have had someone picking her up, but if the night didn’t end well, she didn’t want that ride back. It was just easier if she walked there in the first place. Her shoes clicked loudly on the cement as she approached the upper state part of town. This place that she got reservations for was supposed to be the nicest place in the city of Manuka. Eleyna had spent her time exploring every square inch of Manuka, so she had high expectations for this. With a small smile, she came up to the front, making her way through the crowd of people waiting. As if the man recognized Eleyna from another time, he smiled back at her and took her to her table. The table was in a small little corner booth that was dimly lit like the rest of the place. There was a couple of candles on the table for light as well as a soft lamp above her head. It was so quiet in there. People were chatting, but the classical music was just barely covering it up. Nice blend. It was only by her luck that vampires were at least able to taste regular food.
One of the reasons she had picked this night, as she smiled looking at the menu, was that it was ‘Greek night’. Only served Greek food. She was sure that Marcus would appreciate that. Though they weren’t from Greece, Rome was something that was going to become close enough. There was no food category that placed them as ‘Roman food’. This was as close as she was going to get. She ordered some white wine and sat back against the comfortable padding. She was nervous again. Her eyes were glued to the door so that she was able to get Marcus’ attention, but she was sure that because of scent and close connection, he would be able to find her out of anything. It made her stomach swirl, wanting to get right to the point when he walked in, but knowing, this could be her last. She ought to wait till the end. Yes. Yes, wait till the end. Always the end.

[style=width:430px; padding-top:15px; padding-bottom:15px; background-color:white; border:3px solid #030302;] [style=padding-top:3px; padding-bottom:3px; width:400px; background-color:030302;][style=padding-top:20px; padding-bottom:20px; width:394px; background-color:571111;][style=color:white; font-family:yanone kaffeesatz; font-size:11; letter-spacing:6px; text-transform:uppercase;]keep your heart here with mine [/style][/style] Marcus was nervous, a very rare feeling for the almost two-thousand year old vampire. But this night was oh so very important. It felt like he'd been waiting his entire life for this chance, this moment and the thought that it might end in a way different than what he hoped was an anxious one. He hadn't stopped thinking about Eleyna since the night of the ball. The shock of seeing her again after all those years of thinking she was dead and gone. So many memories and feelings had been brought back to the surface, ones he'd never thought he'd get to relive or feel again. It was almost frightening how quickly it had all come back, strong as ever with nothing but a glance. He'd gone so long telling himself that he had long since put Eleyna's memory to rest but that was quite obviously not the case at all. It really shouldn't have been all that surprising really seeing as there was more than enough proof that he'd done no such thing, his lack of any sort of lasting romantic relationship one of those indicators.
He had never been the sort of man to fall in love easily even as a human and that had not changed when he'd become a vampire. Before winding up as a gladiator in Rome he'd been married to a woman who he cared about but was not in love with per say. Back then arranged marriages were common and they had been betrothed since they were babies. He'd grieved over her death but not like when he'd been told of Eleyna's supposed passing. With her it had felt like a part of him had literally been ripped out. For the first time he'd realized what it meant to love someone with every single fiber of your being. Everything with her had been so different, new and fresh and more intense than anything he'd felt before. It was said that everyone on earth had a soul mate, that single person who was meant to be yours. If he hadn't met Eleyna it was something Marcus might have scoffed at a bit, finding it to be a bit unbelievable really. But after feeling for her how he had (and still did) there was really no comparing it to any other relationship he'd been in since then. The best way to describe it was being with Eleyna felt like home. Like it was where he was meant to be and with anyone else it always felt like he was out of place.
Eventually he'd stopped trying to pretend like it would eventually work in making him forget her. Because if he was honest asking himself to forget Eleyna would be like asking the sun to not rise or the rain to not fall. It wasn't possible. She was and always would be his other half, even in death. All of this was running through his mind as he got dressed for the night, his attire much more casual than the tuxedo he'd been wearing the night they had met again at the winter ball. Although 'casual' is likely the last thing most people would have thought of the black dress pants and dark burgundy dress shirt he was currently buttoning. Standing in front of the full length mirror Marcus left the top two buttons of the shirt undone before giving himself a once over, satisfied with the reflection. He wasn't at all the vain sort but he did want to make sure he looked, well, that he looked good tonight. Or more accurately that he looked like the same man she had fallen in love with all those years ago. Though he'd had it cut shorter at different points throughout the years his hair was currently quite close to the same length as it had been back in Rome coincidentally and like then he usually let the dark curls do as they wished with minimal attempts to tame them.
Perhaps it was foolish to think that something as simple as his appearance could change whatever the outcome of tonight's dinner date would be but if it even had a slight chance of helping it end the way he so desperately hoped it would then he'd take it. He'd been more than happy when he received the call from Eleyna asking him if he would like to join her for dinner tonight, beating him to the punch on it. He wanted to believe she had done so for reasons more than to simply catch up and exchange stories like they had promised to do as the night had come to a close at the winter ball. There was a little voice in the back of his mind telling him not to get his hopes up but Marcus couldn't help it which meant he was either setting himself up for utter heart break or absolute happiness. He knew it was quite possible that just because he had never been able to move on didn't mean she had not. She was after all, a gorgeous woman with a personality to match and any man who didn't try and claim her would have been a fool.
That thought caused his expression to darken slightly, flinching inwardly a bit. No, best not to think on that until he knew otherwise. For now this night was theirs and that was what mattered. Even if she no longer felt the same way for him he wasn't about to do something that might end up with her disappearing from his life again. To at least remain friends was better than not getting to be with her at all. Putting on his shoes Marcus headed down the stairs and into the kitchen, glancing at the clock. He was planning on walking for the exact same reasons as Eleyna though neither of them knew that fact. His apartment was not far from the restaurant she'd chosen and it was a pleasant night so why not? And if things did end in disappointment it would be easier to get someplace where he could lose himself for a time if it came to that. Turning out the lights as he walked out the door, Marcus took a deep breath, praying he would look calmer than he felt once he arrived. It didn't take more than ten minutes to get there, aiming a smile at the man at the desk as he walked in, needing only a few seconds to know she was already there.
Looking across the room he spotted her instantly and the smile widened as he noted how her eyes were trained towards the door, an eager look on her face almost. Gods she was gorgeous. That was the first thought that ran through the vampire's mind as he neared the table. Even without the fancy gown she still easily beat out every other woman in the room. Reaching the table he sat down in the chair across from her, smiling softly. "You look beautiful tonight," He complimented, noting how similar she looked to when they had been in Rome. He'd always thought she looked just as beautiful back then too even without the modern day luxuries of fine clothes or makeup. The waiter had returned with her wine then and asked Marcus if he could get him something as well. "The same, please," He returned smoothly as the man nodded and turned away. Red wine, though good, always reminded him of blood and that was hardly something he wished to be thinking about just now.
Glancing at the menu in front of him, he smiled slightly as he realized why she had picked this particular restaurant tonight. It was the little things like that that made him adore her even more and he had to remind himself to keep the fear that tonight would end badly at bay. The man returned quickly with another glass of wine before glancing at them both with a smile. "Are you ready to order or will you need a few more minutes to decide?" Glancing over at Eleyna, Marcus already knew what he was going to order but was in no hurry if she still needed time. Every extra second he got with her tonight would be appreciated.

She couldn’t survive off of it, and she could go for the rest of her life without eating it, but it wasn’t as if she was going to get some weird seizure form eating human food. There was still taste to it. Made things seem a little simpler. That was one thing she missed about being human. Something that she hadn’t experienced for very many years. How everything just seemed simple. Do this because the life you live was only once for so many years. Especially during that age period when the life expectancy was low. Even lower if you were a male that Rome was going to throw out into war. They had the nasty habit of doing that. Though history books didn’t really cover it all that much, she remembered how normal it seemed. Not very many stood up and asked if it was right or not. It was just understood since they were young.
While she was waiting, she found everything to occupy her time with. Honestly, it wasn’t very long before he showed up, but everything that was going through her head made every small second feel like an eternity. Time flew for her. The years all blended together in this giant blur. What was a hundred years ago or two hundred years ago always crossed her mind. Now, it was taking it’s sweet precious little time. She wished desperately it could hurry. Her fingers ran across the front of the menu, feeling the pattern on it. All the words she saw had definitions below them, but she knew them. Knew most languages in fact. With all of that time on her hands, why wouldn’t she have? It got her mind focused off of everything else going on around her. Education was always something she valued. Grew and learned throughout history. Changing all the time. Something to focus on. It wasn’t really working tonight. Every time she saw a phrase of food, it was attached to some kind of story she remembered. That lead to another. Oh, so many adventures. At the moment, this one just seemed to be the peak of the adventures. She should have been an author.
Despite what she had told herself, she honestly wasn’t sure how she would be able to get over Marcus if he refused her. She couldn’t force any feelings, but for so many years, it was only him. She had tried to move on. Honestly had found someone who was also searching and grieving. That didn’t work. Nothing else worked because she always ended up comparing it to Marcus. What she had with Marcus. Wasn’t good, wasn’t as special, wasn’t as close as he was. At those times, it had always frustrated her for thinking he was dead. Now she was glad she didn’t move on with any of the others. Eleyna would have felt just horrible having to leave that man to jump into Marcus’ arms. As respectable as the woman was, she was sure that’s what she would do. The guilt would have never left her. It was hard to argue with something like that. Something that always seemed so strange to people when they hadn’t experienced it herself. Eleyna had never really been one of them, as times were just different, but she couldn’t imagine how she would look upon herself from an outsiders point of view. Probably a silly girl in a dream that wasn’t going to last forever.
Suddenly, she looked up. After so many years, she learned to know when eyes were on her. When she looked up, a bright smile came across her features. There he was. Standing tall and handsome. Eleyna could never get over his curls. In the manner of being almost tame, but not quite. The years had suited him well. All the manly features that made little strong Eleyna first glance over at the gladiator that had been far out of her range. Her bright eyes glittered in the candle light on the center of the table, the flames flickering on her face. He managed to beat her to the greeting. Her smile became a little more shy, but that same confident look. If she could remember how much her heart beat, she would be able to imagine the sound in her ears as he sat down and they were face-to-face once again. ”Thank you. Such a gentleman.” A slight tease in her voice as the waiter came over in his tight suit. In a small moment, she realized how much his facials hadn’t changed. A couple of scars from fights no doubt, but scars were nothing new really. She supposed she had put a little bit of effort into looking the same. In an act of false hope.
She watched him glance over the menu as she laughed lightly, ”I see you noticed the food choices.” Eleyna wanted to let him get his food, but there was so much that she wanted to say. Even with the reasons she brought him, she still wanted to talk to him. They could spend the rest of their immortal lives together and she was sure she wouldn’t have felt that they spent enough time together. ”Have you explored around Manuka yet? I have to say it’s one of my favorite places.” She piped in right before the waiter came over. Eleyna grinned and pointed to one of the chicken side dinners always finding it ironic whenever she had to eat animal meat. See, that made sense. Not… human. She did not understand the appeal. Even if she had a taste, she was sure she would be more repulsed by the mental thought than anything else. Eleyna almost frowned at that sudden thought, but it was hard to suppress any feelings she was having at that moment no matter what they were.

[style=width:430px; padding-top:15px; padding-bottom:15px; background-color:white; border:3px solid #030302;] [style=padding-top:3px; padding-bottom:3px; width:400px; background-color:030302;][style=padding-top:20px; padding-bottom:20px; width:394px; background-color:571111;][style=color:white; font-family:yanone kaffeesatz; font-size:11; letter-spacing:6px; text-transform:uppercase;]keep your heart here with mine [/style][/style] It was safe to say Marcus was still inwardly trying to convince himself this whole night wasn't just a dream. Just one more of a seemingly endless string of wishful dreams and longings for something and someone that were forever destined to remain in his imagination. Even though it had been a few weeks since the winter ball it felt like an eternity since he'd seen her last and the whole day had been spent impatiently waiting for this moment to arrive. You would have thought that after almost two-thousand years of being apart one twelve hour day would be nothing but it was by far the longest stretch of time he felt he had endured in all the days since. Because this time there was no false hope, no aching disappointment waiting for him at the end. No, this time was different, thank the gods. Still a part of his mind almost wanted to make him second guess himself no matter how much he tried to chase it away. Old habits died hard as they say.
He could still see it though, her smile, bright and warm and beautiful and that kept his anxieties at bay. She was very much real and very much alive. It was a wonderous feeling really, being able to say she was alive after all those many many years of thinking otherwise. And getting back to her was the only thing he wanted to do. Yet there was apprehension too. The fear floating just beneath the happiness that even though they had found each other again it didn't mean she still carried the same feelings. If anything though it ony served to put a quicker pace to his step, ready to enjoy this evening but also needing to get everything out on the table so to speak. Marcus wasn't quite sure how he would be able to stand it if she no longer felt anything for him beyond their shared memories. It wasn't something he really wanted to contemplate yet he knew he should prepare himself for it all the same.
The thrill of seeing her again currently overrode those fears once he reached the restarant, forgotten, momentarily at least, at the sight of her. He hadn't even needed to announce his presence before she was looking up at him, that gorgeous smile lighting up features. For the first time in almost two thousand years Marcus remembered what it felt like to have your breath stolen. He would have been perfectly content to simply stand there and gaze at her like that the rest of the night, revisiting every little detail of her features. He'd never forgotten her face but the years had blurred the sharpness of that mental image so that seeing it now was like viewing a long lost picture of someone you knew. The same person yet completely new all at the same time. And familiar, comfortingly familiar. Seeing her had always given him a sense of comfort, that one constant after every fight and all the aches and weariness that came with it. With Eleyna he felt whole, no matter what sort of physical shape he might have been in at the time.
The flickering candlelight on the table on heightened the memories of when they had been together last in Rome as it had been their only source of light. It had always been amazing to him how she had managed to see to stitch him up with what faint light the flames gave off. Now of course he realized her advantage though he knew she would have worked to do just as well without the help of enhanced eyesight. It also brought out the deeper flecks of bue in her eyes which were trained upon him just as eagerly as his were upon her. They were the sort of eyes you could lose yourself in if you weren't careful. His greeting was met with a smile as she returned it by calling him a gentleman, a happy sort of teasing laced through the words. The waiter came over then, interrupting them for a few brief, but still precious seconds, before leaving them to each other yet again. He'd missed her fond study of his features while addressing the waiter and only noticed how close she'd been watching him as she laughed softly over his reaction to the menu.
Chuckling lightly in return he glanced up to meet her gaze again, a playful smile tugging at his lips. "I was just about to commend you on your choice of restaurant. Impeccable taste as always," The fact that she had purposefully chosen this place on this specific night gave him a small boost of confidence that perhaps tonight would end better than he feared. It had taken him less than a minute to chose his meal and even if he had still been deciding he wouldn't have minded her question in the least. He'd dreamt of this moment long enough, food could wait. Taking in the enthsiastic sound of her voice Marcus paused in answering as the waiter returned to take their orders. Eleyna was cleary ready as well and pointed out what she wanted to the man who wrote it down before turning to Marcus. Reading off the Greek name of his meal without hesitation he smiled a thank you at the obliging waiter as their menus were removed and their orders taken back to be prepared.
Left to themselves again for at least a short time, Marcus focused his full attention upon Eleyna once more. "I've explored a good portion of the city, some parts more than others," Though pleasant enough on the surface there were some places even a two-thousand year old vampire knew better than to linger in for long. It was not the largest city he'd ever lived in but it was a good sized area nonetheless and if you had to learn to give yourself plenty of time if you wanted to really take in every bit of it. Not that he had any issue with having enough time. Tilting his head ever so slightly towards her, he asked inquisitively "How much of it have you seen so far?" He was very much curious to know how long she had been here in Manuka. Or more specifically, how long had they been in the same place without crossing paths, or worse, just missing each other? He almost couldn't help but hope she hadn't been here overly long if only because it would sting less than knowing they'd been that close for who knew how many years. [style=width: 400px; background-color: dodgerblue; border-bottom:10px solid black; border-top:10px solid black; font-family:century gothic; font-size:25px; color:white; text-transform:uppercase; letter-spacing:2px; line-height:110%; text-align:Center;]life goes on but i'm gone It was interesting how some modern day concepts applied to now as well as throughout history. The difference was people had more of a voice now than they had ever been allowed to in the past. The only time someone had a voice in the past was if they were placed behind a weapon. There was a time where it had been that dangerous. Society today forgot about that. The concepts were mostly different and changing just as everything else did. Eleyna heard a couple of phrases that interested her, and it made more sense to the way she felt to Marcus. There was always that one guy that a girl couldn’t refuse or get over. Seemed like something that could be taken so lightly and not seriously. However, she saw the proof. She was the proof. It had never seem as important to her until now. Before, she was content where she was at. Lonely at times, yes, but content and living. She spent most of her time finding other things to focus on. Culture, learning, seeing how society grew- both succeeding and failing.
Why she did she feel like she had never done this before? If it was anything that Eleyna had, it was experience. Obviously she understood the reason she was nervous. No one in their right mind wouldn’t be nervous with what she was going to be proposing by the end of the night. But she knew how to deal with her nervous habits most of the time. Eleyna felt like she was hiding it well, but she was having doubts. Did she look normal? How much had she resembled the new vampire all those years ago? Looking at him, he certainly hadn’t changed much. His hair was a little shorter, but it still had those wonderful curls in the back. Those dark curls she used to tangle her fingers into. His eyes were the exact same. Another vampire lore she was glad didn’t exist was the change of eye color. They always made her feel so warm and at home. Something she was always able to melt right into. When they had been dancing a few nights before, she was certain that would happen by the end of the night. Just melt and stay there forever. It was a shame she wasn’t able to.
For being a technically dead being, she had never felt more alive. Her unnecessary breathing to try to fit in were never easier. Her hands held tight to the menu until she ordered. Confidently, she placed them on the table instead, always trying to appear cool, calm, and normal. Since she had so much practice, hiding her features and emotions was like second nature to her. Not many people could detect it, especially when it was with strangers. But Marcus was no stranger. He was probably able to see right through it. The gentleman wouldn’t say anything unless he felt obligated though. If he continued to impress her like he had. One thing that changed was species status, and she did say that it was nice not wanting to lunge at him. The feeling hadn’t come often, but she was young at that time. Sometimes, she was so caught up with everything, feeding was the last thing on her mind. Suddenly you found yourself a hungry vampire. A fact she never mentioned. For obvious reasons. Telling you lover, even if it was Marcus, that you were a supernatural wasn’t the brightest thing.
She heard from some of the locals that this was place was too upper for their taste. They would prefer someone more casual for dinner, but Eleyna thought differently. She rather liked classical and fancy. One of the small luxuries people forgot they had. She sat up brightly when he commented on her choice of restaurant. Oh, so he did like it. It wasn’t one of the things she had been worrying about considering what else there was on her mind, but it was still nice to know. ”Oh why thank you. I was hoping you’d enjoy it.” Home comfort food might have been the better term for it. Even though she hadn’t experienced something like that. While human, she had been so sick that no food really suited her well. There was something more homey about having the Greek familiarity. Even if they did get a few things incorrect, but she couldn’t expect them to be perfect.
The first thing she did when entering cities was exploring every inch of it. Both for the fun of culture she would find, but also to know the streets well. It was easier to run and hide when every corner was in your mind. Eleyna seemed to let that escape her mind tonight. No matter what happened, she wasn’t sure on telling him about the group that was after her. If her habits passed on, it would have meant he was in the same danger she was. As long as no one knew anything, he was safe. Keeping something from her actually made her stomach turn, but she eased it off. When it was for his only safety, it was easy to just push something aside. Protection of others. It’s what she liked to do with her life hence why she was still a doctor after all this time. ”Most of it. I’m missing some outter parts in the forest, but the city really has it’s own… personality. I haven’t been here that long and I can already tell that much.” Her eyes lit up a little bit when talking about among her favorite subjects. She did have to say that she had already encountered someone very bad here. Atlanta. Who had Eleyna convinced she killed Marcus a long time ago. She’d like to see that beautiful bitch now. Eleyna wanted to go and seek her, but the girl had disappeared. Probably to go back sulking into the hole she crawled out of. She had also met people like Theon who captured her heart in the way a puppy with big eyes might have. ”But I’m a fan of that stuff. I like to see how much times have changed.” Of all people, she was sure he would understand that. She was also asking this to see indirectly how much he had changed. Although he seemed like the exact same man at the dance, that had been a single night to count her judgment on. Not quite enough.

Like many of the people who lived in this city he had been oblivious to the whole other world that was blended in among them. All of the different species, most looking deceivingly human-like in their appearance. There were stories of course much like there still were today but back then anyone spouting such things off was most often branded as crazy or a heretic. Saying that there were people who could live forever, heal instantly and cast spells. Only the gods had such power and to think a mere human could obtain such things unless blessed by them personally would be considered blasphemy.
Yet here he was, still alive and well and looking not a single year older than the day he had "died". All thanks to the woman across from him who it had turned out proved all those so called crazy stories you heard as a child to scare you into going to bed true. Marcus had often wondered through the decades if Eleyna ever planned on telling him what she truly was or if she had been afraid of how he might react to something that would have seemed so unbelievable. He hoped she would have had they been able to do as they planned and escape one day together, start a new life as free people owned by no one and nothing. Unfortunately that had obviously been a dream cut short by way of cowardice and a sword and forced Eleyna's hand in exposing what she was to save him resulting in what he'd thought at the time was her death.
Knowing what he did now Marcus was well aware there was only one thing that could kill their kind but back at that point he had no idea if they had known such a thing or not. Thank the gods they had clearly no clue as to just what they were dealing with and simply assumed she was gone. It still ripped at his heart, the thought of what she must have gone through after they took her that day. He would gladly give up his own life to go back and spare her the pain and fear though he imagined if given the choice Eleyna would not take back a single choice she made. She was one of the most selfless people he had ever known, putting her needs last, with him and with others in that house as well. Just looking at her now he could see very little had changed in the way she appeared as she smiled, her blue eyes lighting up and almost appearing to glow in the soft candlelight. That in itself only served to remind him even more strongly of when they had been together back in Rome as candles were the main source of light in that time. It was a picture he could have stared at all night.
There was one small difference though. A sort of anxiousness in some of her movements that he'd never noticed before even when he'd been brought to her bloodied and bruised from the arena. Marcus half wondered though if he wasn't simply imagining it due to his own faint nervousness but he knew her well, or had at least, and it worried him slightly. Perhaps she had simply desired to catch up for old times sake and wanted nothing more from him than friendship, if that even. Maybe she was nervous he still felt the same for her while she no longer did and was unsure how to tell him? All those thoughts were flickering through his mind and threatening to take over what was supposed to be a wonderful evening unless he got a hold of them quickly. No over thinking things yet, Marcus. Just enjoy the moment, A mantra he recited to himself as they began talking, smiling at how happy she looked that he'd noticed her reason for picking this particular restaurant. Yet another example of her always thinking about the other person's happiness.
"Very much so," He returned with a smile at her mention of hoping he would enjoy it. Marcus couldn't have picked a better place for this little reunion be set. It reminded him (and Eleyna as well he assumed) of home and though there were plenty of things he wished to forget not every memory was a bad one. The moments he had with Eleyna obviously topping the list as far as good ones went, especially the times they were able to slip away and it was only them for a short while. Few and far between were those moments but he still remembered them vividly. It was funny almost what you remembered and what you didn't after so many decades had passed. Some things that seemed so inconsequential and other things like Eleyna that he was certain would never fade no matter how much time went by. He was already storing away new memories from this night, the look on her face as she answered his question as to how much of the city she had seen so far. She was so alive, so bright, and he listened with rapt attention as she talked, her soft voice filtering sweetly across the small table.
The mention that she hadn't been here for very long came as something of a slight relief. Had it turned out she'd been here back when he'd first moved to the city and they had been all of a few miles apart at any given time, or less even... It was clear she loved it as much as he did even if she hadn't been here long, another fact that pleased him more than it might have normally with anyone else. "It's definitely unique," He agreed with a soft chuckle, "I've been here for a little over three years and I still haven't seen every single inch of it. You think you have and then you end up discovering some new part you didn't know even existed," Some of which were probably left best undiscovered but plenty that were worth the search to find. The passing thought of doing so with Eleyna from now on flickered through his mind and increased both his hopes and nerves over everything that was riding on this night.
Marcus nodded slightly at her last remark. "I've always found it amazing how different some things can become while others remain completely the same," His voice was softened then as he caught her gaze, studying her features with unabashed affection. An indirect answer to her indirect question perhaps though he was thinking more in reference to her than himself just then. She seemed no different than the day he last saw her, just as beautiful, just as gentle and sweet-natured. Still the same woman he'd fallen in love with almost two millennium ago. If there was one thing about her that had changed though he could only pray it wasn't her feelings for him because they most certainly hadn't changed where she was concerned except to grow even stronger.

She thought maybe it would have been better if she just flat out asked him the next time they saw each other on the street. There was another thought maybe she would play it safe, just as Eleyna usually did. One didn’t live as long as she did without having to play it safe. A good friend of hers- a phrase rare on itself- convinced her. She had already been thinking about something like this, so when Theon gave the final push, it was really hard to make any arguments against it. He told her that it would drive her nuts not knowing. He was right. Then there was wondering to just go up and tell him or not. Eleyna wanted the last moment though. So picking this restaurant had been perfect. Eleyna tried not to think this could be the last time she would be able to do this. She captured every moment. Every smile he made. The soft small laughs had to be her favorite. So many memories. They were all coming back to her in a rush.
Mostly the candlelit memories. Long nights. Eleyna had always felt bad because the human was tired and exhausted from fighting or training, and she was able to stay up as long as she pleased. But he attempted to stay up. Eleyna always had to force herself to let him catch up on some sleep. He had needed it. A sudden vivid one came to her. She wasn’t even sure if it was right for her to bring it up- case he didn’t remember and left him in an uncomfortable position, but it was worth the small thoughts, ”Do you remember,” She began, ”when we first found out we spoke the same language?” It was an odd statement for anyone who didn’t know. Many times, since Romans just grabbed whatever civilization they wanted, the ‘servants’ didn’t always speak the language that the Romans were fluent in. This caused servants usually to not speak in the native language very well. Most of the orders were given by someone who knew the servant’s language or the servants having to discover the language for themselves.
When she first started, Eleyna was quiet. She had never been the talkative one before, and she knew her place wasn’t to say a word. She would have been able to go through her entire ‘life’ without having to speak. So when she found the man she was healing spoke the same language. The difference between two strangers and what they became. Even if she didn’t know it at that moment, it meant someone to talk to. Someone to talk to her. Who seemed to understand. The first moments. She could possibly say it was the first time they ‘met’ but it had taken her a few times to realize it. It was one of her fondest memories. Mentioning it might hopefully trigger some of his, though she was sure the species changing might have fuzzed it. Maybe not. Some of her memories were still clear and intact from human, but not many. She remembered her father. She remembered how kind her doctor had been to her all the times she was sick. She remembered the day they were attacked. That was it. Nothing in between. Eleyna realized she was starting to get too far into memory lane. She had thought about the past multiple times before, especially recently.
Had he really been here for that long? Eleyna felt like she already knew that information somehow, but it seemed to hit again. To think she had been wanting to go to the city of Manuka for a while now (because she had heard so much about it through the supernatural community). Although to vampires, three years was like baby years. She really hadn’t been there that long, and him only a bit longer. How could he not have seen it all yet?! She was shocked. But it did make sense. Perhaps she thought she had almost the entire city down, but there were more paths she hadn’t found. Like he was mentioning. Some neighbors might be better avoided, but Eleyna would probably find them anyway. She wasn’t scared of what most women who looked like her were frightened of. It was the hunters and the other vampire that made her turn her head. That could happen anywhere. It occurred to her that as much as the pair talked in the ball, there was still things she didn’t know. ”I’m in the forest quite often. There a part that has more wildlife because I seem to be having the worse luck.” It did not occur to her that she didn’t mention of her… diet. Most vampires would frown upon it, so it was an easy habit not to bring it up. The thought of Marcus hunting humans actually made her stomach turn. She knew every other vampire did it, but the thought of something that was human. Especially since she had known Marcus as a human.
Sharing, even like this, probably wasn’t going to be her strongest point. There were still secrets better kept. There were still things she wanted to only bear by herself. There was no point in bringing someone else into it if it would do more damage than good. Plus, it was hard to just let anything pass by after so many years of covering everything up rather carefully. That wasn’t going to change. As Marcus nodded, Eleyna picked carefully at his words. She hoped that he was referring to him not changing very much. With a little more hope in her, she thought maybe he was referring to what he felt about her. Hope was the thing that kept her going all this time. It was the thing at the back of her mind when she was determined Marcus was killed or dead somewhere. Always that doubt that he wasn’t dead. That he was walking around looking for her. Hope had brought her this far. She still had hope that her and Marcus would be able to take off where they left. That she would be able to be in his arms again, blissful and at peace. Wanting to curl up and stay there forever. She knew how it felt to have it, and she missed it. She missed it more than he would probably even believe.

[style=width:430px; padding-top:15px; padding-bottom:15px; background-color:white; border:3px solid #030302;] [style=padding-top:3px; padding-bottom:3px; width:400px; background-color:030302;][style=padding-top:20px; padding-bottom:20px; width:394px; background-color:571111;][style=color:white; font-family:yanone kaffeesatz; font-size:11; letter-spacing:6px; text-transform:uppercase;]keep your heart here with mine [/style][/style] Marcus hadn't realized how empty he had still felt without Eleyna even after the span of years that had passed since they were separated until he'd seen her again at the winter ball. The realization that she was alive and right there in front of him, he couldn't even begin to explain how that had felt. And since then she was all he could think about, wondering how long she had been here, whether or not they had ever even been remotely close to meeting before this and most importantly whether her feelings for him were still there or not. His most certainly were, coming back in a rush the moment he laid eyes on her. It was almost frightening how quickly and intensely he'd felt it as if it had been mere days instead of hundreds of years. Letting her go at the end of that night had been so hard even knowing that she was here in the city and that he could see her again. If he could have had his way he would pull her into his arms and keep her there. You would think after all those years apart a few more days or weeks would feel like nothing but if anything it was worse.
Perhaps if Eleyna had been able to know that Marcus had been struggling with the idea of doing something like this she would have felt less nervous. Meeting over dinner, talking, hoping to find out just where things stood between them. The last part being a more secret hope of course. So when he'd received the call from her asking if he would like to meet her for dinner tonight it had him feeling relieved that she at least still cared enough to want to see him again. Whether it meant she still had feelings for him beyond renewing a friendship of course only time would tell. As much as he was slightly hoping the night went slowly in case it was the last one he had with her it was almost worse not knowing for sure and a part of him felt the end could not come fast enough. Sitting across from her now though Marcus was savoring every single moment, refamilarizing himself with the curves of her features, drinking it all in just in case this was it.
Up until this point their conversation had consisted of the present but after a moment of comfortable silence Eleyna suddenly brought back a memory from their past. The question was given a bit hesitantly as if she was afraid he might not recall that exact point in time by now. It was true he had a slightly difficult time remembering moments from his human life. Bits and pieces here and there. His family. Their home and working on the boats as a fisherman. It was his time as a gladiator he remembered most vividly and the moments with Eleyna were particularly fresh in his mind even after so long. He imagined it had something to do with the fact that she had been the one who changed him and therefore there would always be special sort of tie between them because of it. So she needn't have worried that he wouldn't remember that particular moment, a warm smile parting his lips immediately. "It was the second or third time they had you stitching me up wasn't it? You were muttering something under your breath and it was the most beautiful sound I'd ever heard," Her surprise when he'd responded to the words she'd assumed only she had understood had been amusing and immediately there had been a bond forged between them.
"It sounded like home," He added softly, a wistful sort of look flickering through his eyes then. From that point on the two of them had spent as much time together as possible, though most of it was out of necessity rather than pleasure. He may have won every battle sans that last fateful one but winning didn't mean you came home unscathed you simply didn't come home dead. There had been times when he'd almost wished for death over the pain and had Eleyna not been there it was very likely he would have given in to that desire. The many memories of her next to him, whisperng soothing words of comfort into his ear only they could understand. The times they had been able to slip away and spend a few precious moments alone where his life wasn't on the line and requiring her skills as a healer were also fondly remembered now. The first time they had kissed. Spent the night together. Had he been more confident in knowing what her feelings were towards him in this moment Marcus might have spoken them out loud. As it were though that seemed a bit too forward perhaps and he held his tongue.
The slight surprise on her face at the knowledge that he'd been here in Manuka for three years and still not seen all of it made Marcus chuckle inwardly. She was right in assuming there were parts that were better off avoided simply due to the inhabitants that lived there. Much like Eleyna Marcus wasn't worried for his safety in going there but as they didn't hold much of a draw for him other than idle curiousity he had yet to really explore. Perhaps now that would change seeing as if she planned on ever heading that way he would gladly (and prefer) to accompany her. He didn't doubt she was fully capable of taking care of herself mind you, had for the past two-thousand years obviously, but when it came to Eleyna the protective instincts just kicked in naturally. Even back in Rome it hadn't taken long for the other gladiators who lived there to learn she was not to be messed with unless they wanted their asses handed to them. Her mention of being out in the forest quite often piqued his interest and he leaned forward slightly, understanding exactly what she was talking about because he did the same thing.
"You've stuck to hunting animals all these years," The relief in the seemingly simple observation was more than clear not only in his voice but the expression on his face. "After the soldiers..." He stopped short, still hating the feelings that came with the memory of losing her that night. "A pair of vampires took care of me for a while after that, an older couple. They told me they had helped you when you first arrived in Rome, taught you how to control your thirst for human blood by hunting animals instead," Marcus related the story quietly, for obvious reasons. "They taught me same as they did you and I've lived that way ever since," It was certainly not an easy choice and there were times he had almost slipped but it was worth it in the end if it meant not becoming a monster. It was such a good feeling knowing that she still refused to hunt humans even if it was a choice very much frowned upon by most of their species. Had she done otherwise it would have literally crushed him. The thought was as painful as when he'd thought she had been killed and in a way it almost would have been as if she had because it certainly wouldn't have been the Eleyna he knew and loved.

After all, he was the person who knew him best. No one else- probably not even her father- was able to know her just as well as he did. He might have thought things were different after all these years, but she hadn’t changed very much. At least, she think she hadn’t changed very much. For all she knew, she could have been so different that she wasn’t recognizable to anyone who knew her in Rome, including the love of her life. Which was the reason she hoped she hadn’t. Nothing would break her heart more if the reason they didn’t come back together was because she changed too much for him She didn’t want to change in those ways. She wanted him to be able to look at her and know this was the woman he had fallen in love with once. Yet, she couldn’t completely not expect it if that were the case. Part of her felt prepared for her, but the rest of her wasn’t ready to hear that fierce reality.
At least Marcus still remembered the moments. She would lie if she didn’t say there was a huge stomach twisting moment when he mentioned that he did in fact, remember that moment. So it wasn’t just her looking back and hoping that everything was still somewhat the same. It wasn’t just her who might have dwelled on those moments, wondering why she hadn’t gotten to them sooner. Not only did Marcus remember when it happened, but also he remembered specifically at what point it happened. At his words, she felt herself glowing. She didn’t think of her voice as something that amazing, but she supposed when you were lost, fighting battles you didn’t know why you were fighting, something like a simple voice of the same language must have meant absolutely everything to that man at the moment. Looking up and seeing there was a woman who understood somehow. Who completely comprehended what she was saying. It wasn’t just him. She had also been outstanded, backing up and peering at him curiously with a smile on her face. That moment she had also been just turned vampire, trying to control everything around her. Something that appeared so simple in her life had meant more to her than he would have ever known.
Home? Oh, her unbeating heart swelled. Marcus’ voice had been the voice that haunted her in her few dreams (considering she didn’t sleep very often). His voice was unforgettable. Something that soothed her when she was most worried. Deep and reassuring. It was the thing that kept her sane after all the time of dealing with the fact she was a vampire in the human world. It wasn’t an easy concept to come across. Being surrounded by those who were different than you. Not only different but those you also wanted to kill because it was a natural instinct. Eleyna couldn’t imagine being addicted to something like human blood. A weakness that every other vampire shared. It terrified her. Something that at once gave her nightmares. ”Yes! Yes, that was the time.” Her excitement of him remembering coming through her words, ”Saying something about… the master of the house being a complete idiot for putting such an innocent man out to fight for money.” If she remembered, it had been a little more vulgar than that, but she hadn’t known Marcus knew what she was saying. She thought she was talking out loud to herself at the time. It had been a little embarrassing to find out he knew what she was speaking. But it was covered by the thrill of having someone to talk to.
Home was an interesting concept to her. Once she thought it was Rome, but considering it fell, she didn’t think that it was reasonable of her to think like that. After, she had been moving from place to place, trying to figure out where little Eleyna belonged. No where. No where without Marcus, that much had been clear. She came to the conclusion a little while ago that she felt this was the most home she felt just because of his presence. Yes, it was quite a cute little place with the culture she adored. It wouldn’t have been the same with him, however. A concept she wasn’t ready to explain to him yet. She hoped with all her heart he knew what she was talking about without her actually saying it. ”An embarrassing first meeting,” She started with, now not feeling so shameful with her words- as after all, they had been true. ”But so reassuring. Funny how things start out and blossom on.” What was she saying? Was this too soon? She wasn’t sure. It didn’t seem as bad because she was referring to the past. Whatever happened to them now didn’t dictate what happened in the past. They had loved each other. There was a special connection that she hoped would continue. No denying something that powerful, no longer if it had been two thousand years ago or two million years ago. Same difference when it was that long.
That brilliantly unbelievable handsome man knew exactly what she was referring to when she mentioned the forest. Other vampires would be utterly confused. Talking to him was like re-living everything that made her fall in love with him so long ago. Marcus was more than just an overly handsome face. Even back in Rome, she knew how many of the servants lusted over him, admitting that Aphrodite put a nasty spell on all of them. None of the other Romans had looked like that. He was one of a kind. Which was why picking her had been shocking to her. She was a little more insecure then than she was now. She hoped that wasn’t some sort of turn off. She watched him as he paused, reaching over the table to grab his hand, smiling softly and feeling that electricity bolt run through her. If this was going to be the potential last night, she might as well act the way she wanted to.
He continued his small story, and her mouth opened like a fish with delighted surprise. So, he was that way too? He was actually one of the few? Her insides felt much brighter. Especially at the mention of the pair who had found her. ”They had always been miracle workers. I’m… glad they treated you that way. I was beginning to think I was the only one in the world.” No matter what happened to them, she was not going to mention the group after her. It would put him in mortal danger. She’d cross that bridge when she came to it though. She wasn’t the one to look that far and worry. She wouldn’t be anywhere if she thought that way. Better to see where it took her and deal when it came. Like she was now. Seeing what her and Marcus were or could be. And with all her heart, she hoped for the best.

[style=width:430px; padding-top:15px; padding-bottom:15px; background-color:white; border:3px solid #030302;] [style=padding-top:3px; padding-bottom:3px; width:400px; background-color:030302;][style=padding-top:20px; padding-bottom:20px; width:394px; background-color:571111;][style=color:white; font-family:yanone kaffeesatz; font-size:11; letter-spacing:6px; text-transform:uppercase;]keep your heart here with mine [/style][/style] As much as Eleyna was worrying that she had perhaps changed too much over the many years they had been apart Marcus was marveling over how very much the same she was to him. Same beautiful smile, same kind eyes, same soft dark hair he was dying to run his fingers through once again. Her mannerisms and tone of voice brought him back still to those nights after a match and he'd be exhausted and usually in a good amount of pain. Just her being there beside him had been soothing as if wherever she was she brought a sense of calm with her. As soon as she had appeared beside him everything seemed as if it was going to be alright. Even now he was getting that same feeling despite the worry lingering at the back of his mind over just how this night might end between them.
Perhaps he wasn't the man she remembered. He would like to think he hadn't changed much as far as who he was and what he stood for went but one never really did notice the changes in themselves as much as in someone else. Obviously he was not the exact same man he'd been back in Rome having lived and gone through all that he had thus far but as far as who he was at his core, the man she'd once loved, well he hoped that was still very much visible to her. If that was what she wanted still that is. There was always the possibility that time had shifted her desires to something completely different although so far that seemed to be the very least of all possibilities. After all why go through the trouble of making sure they dined at a place that was reminicent to their past lives together if the memories were no longer as enjoyable?
Clearly they both still held onto those moments despite all the time that had past since then, each remembering that one particular moment with perfect clarity. For him those memories were what he had clung to in those moments when the thought of facing a long eternity without her had plagued his every waking moment. It was probably a good thing that sleep was not something vampires needed much of because if so he was quite certain his nights would have been filled with nightmares more than peaceful slumber. There were moments when he felt as if some of his past was slipping away from him which is perhaps why he'd worked so hard to keep every memory he had of her as vivid and sharp in his mind as possible. Even so things had started to blur ever so slightly and it was enough to terrify him. The fear that someday he wouldn't be able to recall her face any longer.
A fear that he no longer had to carry thank the gods. He couldn't quite get enough of her features and he'd been practically drinking them in since arriving at the restaurant. A look of excitement lit her expression up now as he recalled just what exactly had occurred between them in some of their first moments. His smile turned rather fond and slightly amused at her recollection of the less than complimentary words she'd used in reference to the man who owned them both. "Something like that, yes," A knowing tone laced the words, his eyes twinkling slightly with the shared knowledge only they knew. It had been a relief to know that there were others in the house hold that shared his low opinion of their master as well. It seemed that some servants had been there for so long that they had an almost twisted sense of loyalty no matter how cruel or strict their masters were. He'd learned quickly to keep such opinions to himself but hearing Eleyna's words and in his native tongue no less, well it had been more than comforting to say the least.
She'd become something of a tie to everything he had known and loved for so many years before being captured. That one port in a storm where you knew you were safe. Marcus chuckled softly at her mention of it being an embarrassing first meeting. "It was a memorable first impression," He added, his eyes crinkling slightly into a smile, listening to the rest of her words and feeling a spark of hope rising in his chest. She could simply be enjoying the fond memories but he wanted to believe there was more behind the words than simply that. It certainly felt as if there was more there, a longing tone almost in the way she spoke. "Clearly the gods knew I needed a reason to keep fighting when they brought us together," He also kept to speaking of the past, of what they had been to each other then, feeling safer that way as well. Though not normally one to beat around the bush this time it seemed like there was so much more at stake. If nothing else he at least wanted to be able to look back and remember what was possibly the last evening they had together with fondness and not regret.
There was no denying that she had become the one thing that behind his will to live. There were quite a few gladiators that, after so many battles and enduring so many injuries, simply gave up and let death come. Better of in the next world than to remain here and suffer. Marcus had been close to reaching that point by the time he'd been bought by Maximus. And despite the much better conditions over all he likely wouldn't have lasted as long as he had were it not for Eleyna both in her care of him as well as the bond and love that developed between them. The former still appeared to be there as both seemed to simply understand each other, he in knowing what she meant by going into the forest and she as he faltered at the remembrance of the soldiers. The touch of her hand came unexpectedly and he felt his own bolt of electricity as well, curling his fingers around hers in response. The look of utter surprise and elation on her face continued to grow as he explained his own story and the fact that he too drank only animal blood something that she clearly hadn't expected to hear.
He was glad she remembered the couple that had helped both of them. A part of him was slightly regretful that he had never crossed paths with them again if only to express how very grateful he had been for all they had done. Her admittance of feeling that she must be the only one of their kind to shun human blood had him nodding slightly. "I've felt that way many times myself. It's certainly not an easy way to live but well worth the cost," A faint look of admiration flickered through his eyes then and he added with some wonderment, "I don't know how you managed to be around the scent of my blood so often and withstood it as well as you did," He wasn't sure he would have been able to handle the temptation. Not that he would have attacked her but another innocent person perhaps might have suffered because of it. Yet another reason she was nothing short of perfect in his eyes.
