two hearts on the getaway
Fresh air, dirt beneath his boots, well worn plaid shirt and ripped jeans, this was Jesse's favorite part of the day. Getting home from school and going out to the barn to saddle up his horse for a late afternoon ride. He really wasn't the guy who hated school or learning or anything like that, actually enjoyed it for the most part and did well. One thing he didn't much care for though was the drama. Sometimes petty and short lived and other times lasting for weeks. The latter normally happening most often around the times of the school dances. It was the beginning of the school year and Homecoming was the subject everyone seemed focused upon. Jesse didn't necessarily mind going to dances mind you even if he wasn't a huge fan of dressing up in a fancy suit.
So far though the few dances he'd attended were all for Jr High students as the 7th and 8th grade classes were separate from the high school events. And while they all had thought they were pretty cool at that point in time it wasn't really filled with the hype that the High School dances were. The previous two years most of them went in large groups and only a few actual 'couples' paired up on the dance floor thanks to plenty of chaperones many of which were parents. This time though it was like a whole different world. Suddenly all you heard at lunch was who was asking out who and which couples were still together and someone was caught asking two different people and lying about it and the list could go on and on and on.
Jesse never had been the kind of guy who liked to be the center of attention and for the most part did his best to simply stay out of it. Problem was though they lived in a rather small town and therefore went to a rather small school and pretty much everyone either knew you or knew your siblings or knew your cousins or something. So it didn't really matter if you were a freshman or a senior, if you were known you got your name dropped in the gossip hat. Jesse had never really given much thought to labeling the friendship he and Leila Blackwood shared. She was by far his best friend in the entire world and he wasn't sure what he'd do without her. They spent practically all their free time together, sat at the same lunch table and often studied together too. But that's what friends did right? It didn't matter if you were two girls or two guys or a guy and a girl. Apparently other people didn't think so and were looking to put their own label on the relationship.
He did his best to ignore it and act like it was no big deal but it was starting to get to him a bit, especially after the last few days. It started with a couple guys he knew the names of but not much more than that had asked him about her today. Were they going out? And if not was he asking her to the dance? Because both clearly wanted a shot if he said no. He really shouldn't have cared so much, he and Leila were simply friends after all right? He did care though and for the first time something that could only be pegged as jealousy sparked in his chest at the thought of Leila going with either of the two guys. They were decent enough guys and honestly there was no reason he could think she shouldn't say yes if they asked aside from he wasn't ok with it. If he was really being honest with himself Jesse would have admitted he had sort of just taken for granted that Leila was, well, his. Which was ridiculous since he'd never done anything to warrant that assumption.
It was intimidating though, actually considering pursuing something more than friendship with her. Not that he wasn't attracted to her, good grief, you would have had to been stupid not to be. She was gorgeous and smart and funny and kind. Absolutely perfect. No the real problem was not knowing what her feelings were towards him. Did she think of him as just her best friend but nothing more? Because the last thing he wanted to do was mess up what they had. It was far too special and important to him for that to happen. The uncertainty had been stewing in his mind since then but he had never been a guy who remained indecisive for long. Some things were simply worth the risk and after another encounter involving the dance with one of his female classmates he'd made up his mind. Before they had left school that day Jesse had asked Leila if she wanted to go for a ride with him later to which she had quite happily agreed.
Slowly getting his horse, Sampson, saddled up and ready to go he heard the sound of hooves thudding against the ground outside the barn and a smile automatically parted his lips at the sound of the door opening a little wider. "Hey, Lei,"
