i will hold on as long as you like faded - wearing tank and shorts - lyrics by mumford&sons Life always took sudden turns when you least expected it and the rule was no different for Leila Blackwood. Two years ago, she wouldn’t have believed that she’d step foot out of Montana much less not return to it in the foreseeable future. The “Two Years Ago Leila” thought she had had the perfect plan laid out. She had just graduated high school and with little to no money, had no intentions of going to college. Instead she had hung around her home, perfecting skills such as cooking and cleaning and learning every bit of her culture from her grandma. She and Jesse had already been dating at that point and pretty much everyone had been taking bets on when Jesse would get around to proposing. And once he did, well, her future was pretty much set from there. She literally had everything that she could have wanted and then some. Well, almost anything. Two Years Ago Leila would have wanted to pursue photography, but it was something she decided she would have to keep as a hobby.
And then came that sudden, sharp turn that had thrown everything out of balance. Jesse had gone missing and was presumed dead and despite all the wide open space of Montana, it was suddenly much too claustrophobic for Leila. She was out of there the moment that Jesse’s permanent disappearance became too real for her to handle, leaving her and her cameras to travel the US. That in itself had been a big enough change, seeing as how the old Leila would have never even considered that. But that wasn’t even where the changes stopped. No, that was only half of the ordeal.
Travels had brought Leila to Manuka where she had run into none other than Jesse Dalton, back from the dead. He had told her all about the night he had disappeared, how he had been bitten by a werewolf the month before and that after he had realized what he was, he thought it was too unsafe to be around his family and the people he loved. Despite having no solid evidence or real reason to actually believe him, Leila had and the next thing she knew, they were settling into life together in Manuka, Maine. Two Years Ago Leila would have been completely blown away by this picture but Now Leila couldn’t imagine her life being any different.
Not to say that life was a complete easy peasy, cake walk. Leila talking about it could make it sound like that, but when Leila had decided to stay by Jesse’s side he had said things were going to be difficult and he was right. She wouldn’t trade her life for anything in the world, but there were nights when she wondered why this mess had to happen to them, much like tonight. See, the days leading up to the full moon were always stressful for the two of them. Jesse seemed more irritable and agitated, whether it was something he was aware of or not it still happened. Leila tried to be extra kind to him on those days, but it was always hard because she was on edge too, wishing she could change what would happen to him in a few nights but being powerless to do so. And then on the actual night of the full moon, Jesse would run as fast and as far away as he could get from civilization to keep from hurting anyone when he was in his wolf form.
Those were the nights that Leila sat in their bed awake, unable to close her eyes while she imagined everything that could happen to Jesse while he was out there. That was the funny part – Leila never thought about the damage he could cause, seeing as how the Jesse in her mind wouldn’t even hurt a fly. It rarely occurred to her wolf Jesse wasn’t the same as normal Jesse. Regardless, she was always worried that he would get attacked by another werewolf or worse, a hunter (she had been slowly learning about the secret world that had been under her nose for the past twenty years). Her mind continued like that into the wee hours of dawn, when she’d hear Jesse come into the apartment. At that point, Leila would turn out the bedroom light and slip under the covers as if she had been asleep the entire time. Jesse would feel guilty if he knew she stayed up all night waiting for him to come back
So tonight was no different. Leila sat, staring at the ceiling while her mind raced with all the possibilities. A book was propped open next to her on the bed but she could hardly focus on it for a few minutes before her mind wasn’t on it any longer. Finally, just when Leila had thought that Jesse was rather late tonight, she heard the front door open. Flipping out the end table light, Leila made herself comfortable under the blanket and waited for Jesse to come to bed. He normally took a couple of minutes to go about his business and then he’d join her.
Except tonight apparently. Leila laid in silence, trying to hold her breath in order to listen to Jesse walk around the apartment. She almost wished that she had the sensitive hearing that he did, just so she could figure out where he was. But she was stuck with her limited hearing and that was telling her that he had just started a shower, or so she thought. Why though? That was against the routine that Leila had gotten used to. She internally debated with herself, trying to decide if she should let him do his thing or go and figure out if he was okay. The second won and Leila pushed herself out of bed, walking as swiftly but as quietly as she could towards the bathroom. “Jesse?” the girl called when she got to the bathroom door, light knocking on it. If he didn’t answer, she had no problem going in. just promise me we'll be alright

[/div] YOUR CRYING EYES SAID - - - - A MILLION WORDS TONIGHT Blood. The smell of it, the sticky feel of it, the bitter metallic taste of it. It was practically overwhelming Jesse's senses even in the murky haze that was the result of switching back from his wolf form. And the clearer things grew the worse it became. All it took was one glance down to discover the reason and the sight of himself cause the boy's eyes to widen in horror. His entire torso was just about drenched in the red sticky liquid, though it was centered mostly on his arms and chest. There was the brief fear it was his blood but he already knew that wasn't the case or he wouldn't be alive right now. Deep down though there was a part of him that almost would have welcomed that though instead of what he he was fearing it meant now. This was quite frankly the one thing he'd been fearing since that first night back in Montana when he'd found himself inches away from killing his own family. His heart was pounding by this point as he scrambled to his feet, the leaves beneath him scattering haphazardly.
He'd come out here to the woods much earlier that day, doing his best to get as far away from civilization as he possibly could before the moon rose that night. It was something he'd started back when he'd first arrived in Manuka and he planned on keeping it up as long as he needed to if it meant ensuring no one got hurt because of him. Something that had become even more important in the last few months now that Leila was with him again. Her coming to Manuka had been the absolute last thing he'd ever expected and though he'd been nervous at first about her reaction to him and what he was he could honestly say he'd been happier than he'd ever been since leaving Montana. She was always able to bring a smile to his face no matter what the situation. Despite how crazy his explanation had sounded to her about why he'd left in the first place she had believed him and though he'd told her how dangerous it could be had refused to leave.
If anything their bond was even stronger now that before if only because they only had each other to rely on here. No family or really any close friends, though hopefully that would change the longer they stayed here. For now though it was really just the two of them against the world when it came down to it. Especially since the fact that he wasn't exactly a human was something they both wanted to keep on the down low from the rest of the world. Getting an apartment together had been the natural next step seeing it made little sense to live in separate places only to spend their time at either one or the other. And honestly after so much time spent away from her Jesse wanted nothing more than to keep her as close as possible. The apartment he'd been living in was hardly big enough for one person and hers wasn't much better. He had found a job at the McCreedy Ranch helping run their trail rides and taking care of the horses. It wasn't a lot of money but it paid the bills and with Leila also working at Steaming Beans they had enough to rent a small but decent little place for themselves.
They'd just sort of settled into life together like they had never been apart really. If his changing every full moon hadn't been hanging over their heads life honestly would have been perfect. Leila handled it ridiculously well though, or at least she never showed him otherwise. Jesse wasn't foolish enough to think it didn't bother her or that she didn't wish things could be different but as was typical the girl always put his needs before her own. The closer it came to the full moon the more agitated and restless he grew, something he still couldn't seem to control and wasn't sure if you could. Part of that was the nervousness that this was the time he would end up doing something horrible or run into a bad situation and just never come home. Those thoughts were always plaguing his mind the few days before as he tried to prepare himself for the shift. Despite his best efforts though he always managed to snap at her at some point, which he'd always instantly regret and apologize for doing. She'd just give him a smile or a hug, tell him it was ok and ask if there was anything she could do to help him. He wasn't sure what he'd done to deserve her really and made a point of taking her out after every full moon and doting on her to try and make up for it all.
All the stress and the nerves and the sleepless night when he did leave to shift. Though she pretended to be asleep when he came home he could tell from her breathing she had been awake waiting up for him. A part of him wanted to tell her not to but Jesse knew if the roles were reversed he would be doing the exact same thing. Still, he wished so badly that he could change things, that they could live a normal life together like they had dreamed about back in Montana. That had been the thought running through his head as he'd kissed her goodbye that evening, wanting nothing more than to be crawling into bed with her just then. The last thing he could remember was standing out alone in the middle of the woods, waiting. Everything that had happened was just a blank slate now and he was left looking at the blood covering him with confusion and horror. The one thing he had discovered over the course of the last year and a half was that no matter where he might have wandered as a wolf he always came back to the place he first shifted. He wasn't sure whether that was his own little quirk or happened with everybody but either way it made the whole waking up without any clothes thing a little easier to deal with.
His jeans, shirt and shoes were right where he left them and he quickly pulled on his pants followed by the plaid flannel shirt, which he left unbuttoned for sake of time. Right now he just needed to get home. By the time he made it back to the apartment the sky was just beginning to show the very faintest hint of pink on the eastern horizon. A pro at being quiet by this point he slipped inside almost silently, the latch clicking behind him as he shut the door. Normally he would change into a tank and shorts and join her in bed a few minutes later. Tonight though that was obviously not going to be possible. The bathroom was right next to their bedroom and he peeked in to see Leila's form outlined beneath the comforter in their bed. He was desperately hoping she was actually asleep for once because he didn't want her to have to see him looking like this. Stepping into the bathroom he closed the door behind him and flipped on the light, seeing himself in the mirror and once again horrified by just how much blood was covering him. Wanting to just get it off he opened the shower door and turned on the water to get it warm before taking off his clothes and tossing them in a pile in the corner.
He'd only just stepped in the shower when he heard Leila's voice calling his name softly followed by a light knock. His heart dropped and he hesitated, half debated telling her everything was fine and for her to go back to bed. The one thing they had always been with each other though was honest. She knew she could trust him completely and he didn't want to break that now by lying to her about what had happened. "You can come in, baby," He called back, hoping to God she wouldn't see him and run. There was just so much blood though and well, even his mind had gone to the worst possible scenarios so he imagined hers would as well. For some reason though it was easier to think worse of himself than to think of Leila thinking that of him. tagged .

i will hold on as long as you like faded - wearing tank and shorts - lyrics by mumford&sons There was a moment or two between the actual knock and Jesse’s response that had Leila on edge. He was hesitating – if he had heard her, which Leila wouldn’t doubt he had – and she couldn’t remember the last time he had done that. When they had first reunited, maybe? But since then they had made an unspoken pact to be nothing but honest and she had come to expect nothing but the truth from Jesse. Now though? Well, what could be so bad that he had to stop and think about his response for her? Her brain couldn’t come up with any situation, other than him thinking that she wouldn’t respond well to whatever had happened tonight. That couldn’t be it, could it? Jesse had to know by now that he meant the world to her and nothing he ever did or said could change that. The sentiment sounded cheesy and too much like a poorly written romance novel, but it was true none the less. It was something you realized when you thought that someone who was very important to yous was dead for a year.
And then came Jesse’s reply and even though he was telling her to come in, she couldn’t help but feel as if something was wrong. She was probably just being ridiculous and was worrying over nothing. Maybe Jesse had just felt like taking a shower. It could be as simple as that. Her mind was just overreacting. That was perfectly logical. She had been awake for however long, worrying and stressing. It made sense for her mind to be overactive right now and trying to imagine the worse. And yet, even with that thought, Leila still couldn’t shake the strangeness of this situation. Maybe it was because instinct told her differently, but she wanted to believe nothing was out of the ordinary.
A sentiment that was thrown right out of the window the moment she opened the bathroom door, however. Leila wasn’t quite sure what she had been expecting to see when she actually went into the bathroom, but it certainly wasn’t that. Oh god. Leila brought a hand to her mouth, stifling a gasp. The girl couldn’t believe the sight in front of her. It was hard to try to mesh the scene with reality. There was so much blood. She felt sick to her stomach. That couldn’t all be from Jesse, could it? There was no way he could have bled so much and still be standing. She knew werewolves could heal quickly (Leila had been calling her grandmother to ask about tribal legends under the pretense that she was trying to write them all down for memory’s sake) but they didn’t heal that speedily nor could they simply survive that great of a wound.
“Jesse, sweetie! What happened?” Leila asked hurriedly, moving her hand away from her mouth. She fully entered the bathroom and shut the door behind her, though she wasn’t quite sure why. It wasn’t like anyone else was going to walk into the apartment and see him like this, but she still felt it was necessary. And then she walked over to him, quickly checking to see if she could figure out where the blood was coming from, though she couldn’t find it. Maybe all the blood was covering it. That seemed logical enough. “Baby, where are you hurt?” she questioned, checking again just to make sure she wasn’t missing some obvious wound.
It was slowly beginning to dawn on her, however, that maybe this wasn’t all his blood. Well, to be honest, it was a thought that had started forming at the back of her mind the moment she had just realized how much blood was there. But it was a thought that was going to stay there, pushed away. Leila wasn’t going to believe that and she wasn’t going to jump to conclusions without hearing Jesse’s explanation of whatever had happened tonight. Leila had decided that a long time ago, back when Jesse first told her what he was and she had made the decision to stick around. From the way Jesse had talked about being a werewolf, she figured they probably had a pretty bad rap. But she knew Jesse. She had known him since they were little kids. She always believed the best of him and she wasn’t about to start assuming things simply because there had been a little change.
Besides, Jesse was probably as freaked out as she was, if not more so. For as long as Leila had known werewolf Jesse, she had never seen him in a state like this and she doubted it was a normal occurrence for him. So first things first; she had to make sure Jesse was alright. Not just physically, but emotionally too. This entire ordeal had to be shocking for him and surely he’d want to talk it out. At least Leila knew she’d want to if she was in his position. Then again, it was kind of hard for her to put herself in his shoes accurately considering she had never been through what he was going through right now. She could try her best though.
The best thing Leila could do right now though, was help him clean up. She doubted it’d be easy to just wash all that blood off. So she grabbed an old towel out of the closet and walked back to the shower, soaking the towel in the shower stream. “Here, let me help you,” the girl offered, feeling much calmer now that she had a task she had to do and a plan to follow. Leila had always done better with those anyway. She liked knowing what she had to accomplish in order to meet her goal. In this case, it was get Jesse washed off and comfortable. And then talk, when he was ready to. And after all of that was done, they could finally go to bed. Leila thought Jesse could probably use some good snuggling after the night she was sure she’d get to hear about.

[/div] YOUR CRYING EYES SAID - - - - A MILLION WORDS TONIGHT Deep down Jesse had known Leila wasn't sleeping and that she would most certainly hear him once he got in the shower. That was never part of the routine on these nights. A quick wash up maybe but that was about it. Then again he'd never come home looking like this before either. He wasn't annoyed about her knocking on the door and checking on him, he'd have been more surprised if she hadn't actually. It was in her nature to be that way, protective and caring. Always making sure everyone else around her was ok. Considering how on edge both of them had been the past couple of days along with this night being as stressful as it was every month her worrying over this unexpected action was completely understandable. It didn't make it any easier to have her seeing him look like this though.
The moment she stepped into the bathroom he could see the shock covering her face, a small gasp muffled behind the hand that came up to her cover her mouth in horror. It was an automatic reaction he knew but Jesse couldn't help but flinch inwardly. She didn't need to be seeing this. Didn't need to have this image burned in her mind. Because guaranteed it would stay there. For a few long seconds there was complete silence aside from the sound of the water from the shower spattering against the floor. Jesse had just barely stuck his arms under the spray when she had knocked so very little of the blood was even starting to wash off, a harder task than he'd thought it would be now that it had dried. And that's what he wanted more than anything just then, to get it off of him. It was all he could smell, that bitter, metallic scent was burned into his nostrils it seemed and his heightened senses only made that ten times worse.
He gave a quick glance over his shoulder as she entered the small room fully, closing the door behind her out of habit he guessed and her worried exclamation brought a faint shake of his head. "I-I don't know..." His voice was distant, as if he almost couldn't believe what was happening either and he scrubbed a little harder at the dried blood on his lower arms. The more he stared at it the more the desire to remove it rose in his chest, that tightening feeling as if you were starting to suffocate a bit. Not knowing if it was human blood or something else's was the worst part. Best case scenario would have it being an animal of some sort but for some reason he felt that wasn't the case. He knew he'd hunted before on the full moon and never had he come back drenched in blood like this. Leila was beside him then, her hands reaching out towards him, inspecting every inch of his skin, asking him to tell her where he was hurt. The fact that her first thought was of his own well being wasn't surprising but it meant more to him in that moment than she probably was even aware.
Wanting to ease her worries on that front at least though, Jesse gently halted her frantic inspection, grasping her hands for a moment. "I'm fine, hun, I'm fine," He assured, his jaw muscles tightening a bit seeing as that obviously meant this was not his blood. Not most of it at least. He did have a few cuts and scrapes but nothing even close to account for the amount staining his torso. "It's not my blood," Stating it all the same despite the fact that he knew she was smart enough to have figured it out he met her brown eyes with his blue ones, now swimming with something akin to fear and desperation. He didn't have to ask to know what she was likely thinking just then seeing as the same thoughts were running through his head as well. Had he done something horrible? Murder an innocent human or even other supernatural? Not all of them were evil after all, Jesse being proof of that much. Hurting anyone or anything was the very last thing he wanted to do. Even killing a deer or elk when he was a wolf didn't sit well with him even if it was better than the alternative.
A part of him was waiting for her to ask him if he thought it was human blood, not that she would be accusing him of anything but out of the same fear he had. Though it wasn't something they had ever really talked about before, something like that happening, there was sort of that unspoken worry between them each full moon. What if this time he did something awful that he wouldn't remember doing? What if he got into a situation that left him unable to get back home? Those questions, and many more, ran through his mind all the time though he tried his best to not dwell on them. Yet now there was no escaping them. She didn't say anything though. Didn't demand answers or even calmly question as was likely more her way. She simply turned around to grab an old towel out of the closet behind her before soaking it in the hot water flowing out of the shower head. "Here, let me help you," The soft tone of her voice was so very comforting at that moment and ony then did he realize how badly his hands were shaking. "I don't remember what happened, Leila, I can't remember-" The words started to tumble from his lips, an almost panicked hitch cutting them as he took a deep breath, her being there with him right then the only thing keeping Jesse from freaking out completely just then. tagged .

i will hold on as long as you like faded - wearing tank and shorts - lyrics by mumford&sons Somehow, it was worse after Leila heard Jesse speak. Then she could tell just how scared he was from all of this. It was one thing to look at him and see that expression but an entirely different thing to actually hear him express it. There were very few times that Leila heard him scared and when she did, it made her more nervous. In all the years she had known him, Jesse almost always seemed self assured and calm. Not to say that that was the only way Jesse knew how to be or anything; it was just what Leila was used to. To see him so shaken up made her feel worse. It happened when your rock was starting to not look as stable as it normally did.
The girl’s nerves were eased a little, however, when Jesse took her hands and assured her that he was all right and that it wasn’t his blood. Leila had already started to come to that conclusion herself, but it was so much more comforting to hear it from Jesse as well. Leila could only look over him after all, she didn’t know how he was actually feeling or what he was thinking until he vocalized it. And Jesse confirming it wasn’t his blood lifted a huge weight off of her shoulders. While she had suspected it wasn’t his, knowing for sure it wasn’t just completely eradicated that worry. Of course it brought up the question of exactly who or what the blood belonged to, but to Leila, that wasn’t an important question right now. She honestly didn’t even need to know the answer to that question as long as Jesse was okay.
Clearly it was a huge worry on Jesse’s mind and Leila couldn’t blame him. The girl had no clue what he was going through. She couldn’t even begin to relate to how awful it must’ve been awful turning into a wolf that you had no control over once a month. Not only that but not remembering any of it later? That would be downright terrifying. Leila thought Jesse had been dealing well with everything, considering his situation and all. So she hated the moments like this, the ones that caused him to be afraid of himself and of what he was capable of. It wasn’t fair that he had to live with that fear.
The shaking of his hands didn’t escape Leila’s notice and she wished more than anything that she could just pull him into a hug and stay like that until he was calmed down enough. However, the girl couldn’t help but think he’d probably push her away right now, not because he wouldn’t appreciate the gesture but because it probably wouldn’t be all that comfortable for him while still being covered in blood. Leila wanted to get that off of him as quickly as possible so he could forget about everything all the sooner. Or at least get it off his mind quicker.
So instead of the hug, Leila took one of Jesse’s hands and laced her fingers with his in an attempt to at least stop the shaking a little. “Baby, don’t think about that right now. Focus on getting cleaned up first. You’ll feel better,” Leila suggested, not sure she could even bear to hear him worry like that when she couldn’t physically comfort him and assure him that everything was going to be okay. Her brown eyes held his blue ones for a couple of moments before Leila lightly tugged his arm under the shower stream and gently started to scrub off the blood.
Once Leila had his hand and forearm completely clear and quickly inspected it to make sure she had all traces of blood gone from there, she moved to his upper arm. There wasn’t nearly as much blood as there had been on his lower arm and it took much less times to clean it off. Again, Leila double checked to make sure she had gotten every last bit left on that part of his skin before she met his eyes again. “See? Aren’t you starting to feel a little bit better getting rid of all of this?” Leila asked, squeezing his hand and hoping that seeing the blood gone would help calm him a bit.
She wished she could wind back the clock to the night Jesse had gotten bit and stopped all of this from happening. Not that Leila knew how she’d even do that, of course, but she didn’t want to have to see him suffer like this because of some stupid bit of chance that hadn’t played out in his favor. Jesse was the last person Leila knew who deserved to have anything like this happen to him and she hated to see it affecting him so negatively. Since she couldn’t change anything though, it just meant Leila had to fix now as much as she possibly could.

[/div] YOUR CRYING EYES SAID - - - - A MILLION WORDS TONIGHT Jesse hated seeing himself this way just as much as Leila did, likely more so even. He wasn't the sort of guy who was ever really used to feeling afraid very often. Growing up his parents hadn't exactly sheltered him from taking risks or made him feel fearful about any of the activities he participated in on a regular basis. The whole Rodeo thing had been big in their town and seeing as he grew up on a ranch it was pretty much something he had done since he was able to sit in a saddle. Barrel racing, roping, bull riding and bucking broncos were all on the list of events he had competed in and though there was small risk in the first two the other ones did certainly hold a certain amount of danger to them. He'd broken more than a few bones over the course of his childhood, but no more than your normal, risk taking boy.
He could probably count on one hand the times he could recall feeling legitmately scared and they all either involved his family or Leila. The one in particular that stood out in his mind even now was the time he and Leila had gone out for ride on a couple of yearling horses, getting them used to being ridden before they were sold. Both of them were expert riders and normally had no problems controlling the animals even if they got a little fiesty. In something of a freak encounter though a fox had startled Leila's horse and it had bucked her off before she could even react. She'd hit the ground hard, enough to knock her unconscious for a couple of minutes, and Jesse couldn't remember ever feeling as terrified as he had then.
Maybe that was actually part of why he felt so afraid right now too. Because when it came right down to it this scenario that was happening, with him covered in blood unable to remember if he killed an innocent human being or not, was the main reason he'd left Montana in the first place. So that he could never accidently hurt anyone he cared about without even knowing it. Hurting her was his absolute worst fear imaginable and even though he knew that she'd be safe as long as he stayed away from Manuka until it was over there was always the worry that someday something would go wrong. Right now though that wasn't what had happened and she was there next to him, worry written all over her face as she did her best to calm him down. He'd been prepared to answer any questions she might have asked him and he wouldn't have blamed her for having a million of them after seeing the state he had come home in just now. Freaking out wasn't really something Leila did, either angrily or in a fearful manner and she stayed true to that personality trait even now though.
Any questions or worries that might have been (and likely were) floating through her mind she appeared to tuck away and focused all her attention on helping him. Her hand wrapped securely around one of his own, lacing their fingers together and the action did exactly as she hoped and eased the shaking for the moment. Her soft words had the same effect and he could feel his heart starting to slow back down to its normal pace as their gazes met and held for a long moment. Yes, she was right, he just needed to get cleaned off and feeling like a human being again. Taking the initiative, she tugged his arm gently beneath the stream of water and began the process of washing every spot of blood off of his skin. By the time she was finished the panic in his chest had settled to a dull sort of feeling and Jesse was more than grateful for that fact.
For the first time since he'd stepped foot back into the apartment that night a smile tugged faintly at his lips as she looked back up at him after ensuring every inch of his arm was void of any trace of blood. Nodding a bit at her question, he let out a slightly relieved sounding sigh, squeezing her hand back tightly. "Yeah, yeah I do," He returned quickly, taking a deep breath before going back to getting the rest of the blood washed off with a little more help from Leila. As he was finishing up she stepped out of the bathroom to get him a pair of shorts to wear to bed and by the time she came back in with them he was out of the shower and drying off. Tying the towel in a low slung manner around his waist, Jesse took advantage of the moment she handed them to him to pull her in close for a moment. "Thanks, baby. I'd be lost without you," He punctuated the soft words by leaning in to kiss her gently, genuinely wondering how on earth he had made it the whole year before this without her in his life.
It was only a few minutes more before they were back in their bedroom and the clock read almost four in the morning he noticed as he crawled back into the bed beside Leila. Thankfully the two of them had learned to request the day after the full moon off from their respective jobs so they could sleep in late. In unison they automatically gravitated to the other and were soon nestled together, her head on his chest and his arms wrapped securely around her. Right now he just wanted, no needed, her close. . tagged .

i will hold on as long as you like faded - wearing tank and shorts - lyrics by mumford&sons For the first time all night, Leila knew everything was going to be okay. Sure, that thought had been floating at the back of her mind; eventually everything was going to be okay. But seeing Jesse smile, even if it was a small one, completely proved that fact to Leila. It’d only take her a little bit longer for Jesse to be completely washed off and then he could start to feel at least a little bit more normal. That was all Leila wanted. She wanted him to feel safe and okay again because she could only imagine how terrified he must’ve been earlier. No one should have to be that scared of anything.
Luckily, the blood seemed to be coming off much easier than Leila had thought and when most of it was gone, she had slipped out to grab him shorts. When she came back, Jesse had pulled her into a kiss and Leila gratefully obliged. She had to say, she found herself blushing slightly at his words. Leila thought that Jesse would’ve been able to manage perfectly fine without her here, but it was still a nice feeling to know that she was needed. And she wasn’t about to argue that right now. Instead, Leila lightly giggled and gave Jesse his shorts. “Get dressed, you goob.”
While he did that, Leila went back out to the bedroom to make sure everything was ready for them to go to sleep. She turned out the light and slipped under the covers only to be followed by Jesse a short bit after. By this point, they basically had their routine. Leila knew exactly where she fit against Jesse and she slid into that position easily. Feeling his warm body against her side finally put Leila at an ease she hadn’t felt since he had left earlier that evening. This was how it always was. Every full moon, Leila was on edge until Jesse could slide into bed next to her. That was when she knew he was safe and sound.
Leila shifted her head slightly on Jesse’s chest so she could look up at his face. From this close, she couldn’t get her eyes to focus on him so his face was a little fuzzy but it didn’t matter. They had spent so much time together that Leila didn’t need to be able to see him to know exactly what he looked like. By this point, the girl was pretty certain that she knew Jesse’s face better than her own. That was just what happened when you grew up with your best friend and then eventually fell in love with them. The familiarity caused Leila to smile and she snuggled in a little closer. “I love you, Jesse,” Leila murmured, thinking now was a good time to remind him of that. “So very much.”
She waited a few beats before saying anything else, enjoying the feeling of Jesse’s chest rising and falling. Such a rhythmic movement always made Leila sleepy. She just felt so calm when they were together like this. That, combined with the fact that Leila felt safest when she was curled in his arms like she was now, made it almost impossible for her to not sleep. But as much as she wanted Jesse to not think about what had happened, she thought now that the worst was over they should kind of talk about it. Otherwise it’d just be something he’d push deep down and out of mind and Leila always thought that ended up hurting someone more in the long run.
But she also wasn’t going to pressure him into talking about anything he wasn’t ready to reveal yet. That wasn’t good either. When he was wanted to talk about it he would. Leila just had to remind him that she was there for him no matter what. “Baby, whenever you’re ready to talk about earlier, I’ll be ready to listen.” She was sure he was already aware of that, but Leila could only think that it’d be nice to hear it again. Sometimes it was nice to be reassured of what you already knew. It made everything feel more stable and secure.

[/div] YOUR CRYING EYES SAID - - - - A MILLION WORDS TONIGHT The moment Jesse had stepped back through the apartment door he'd begun to feel less panicked. Just the familiar scent and feel to the place was comforting after the trip back through the woods and rather dark and quiet city to get home. Still every nerve felt like it was on edge and his breathing had yet to slow down to its normal rhythm even as he'd tried to make his way as quietly as possible into the bathroom. Not until Leila had called to him through the door, concern lacing every word, had he begun to feel even remotely ok again. Despite the slight hesitation in telling her to come in there really hadn't been a moment when Jesse had even considered insisting she stay out or go back to bed. True he'd been worried about how she'd react upon seeing him but not letting her see him at all wasn't even an option.
Since they were little kids the two of them had shared just about everything. He couldn't really remember a time when they hadn't told each other all their secrets or dreams or silly thoughts. The few times he had tried it had been the hardest thing in the world and the way it had effected their friendship along with it was not something he'd liked one bit. It had always put a strain on their normally perfect relationship and just made everything off. And right now he honestly needed her more than anything. She had always had this way about her that somehow made you feel like things were going to be alright. Just a quiet, soothing vibe that never failed to put him at ease no matter what was happening or going through his mind in the moment. And there was plenty going through his mind tonight. It was like one big whirlwind of confusion and fear that wouldn't stop until she'd stepped through the door and was standing next to him.
From that moment on things had slowly unwound and he finally felt like he could breathe again. She'd oh so patiently and sweetly helped him get the blood washed off of his skin and that was a big help in calming him down. A heightened sense of smell was just one of the many traits that carried over even when he wasn't shifted and it had made the metallic stench of blood almost too intense to handle. Getting rid of it proceeded to ease that scent from bothering him as much even though it still lingered in his nose. It was bearable though at least. The sound of her giggle as he pulled her in for a quick kiss automatically had a smile spreading across his lips and he took the shorts without argument and did as she had playfully ordered. Running the towel quickly through his short hair to dry it a bit more he was following her back into the bedroom a minute or two later.
She was already there, waiting, and once he'd joined her and she snuggled up next to him that was when things started feeling normal again. For the first time in the past few hours. It was the same every full moon, not feeling right until he was back here with her beside him but tonight especially. He glanced down as she angled her head towards him, thinking for probably the billionth time since he'd known her how crazy beautiful she was. This, them together right now, was Jesse's favorite place to be in the entire world. Her words brought a soft smile to his lips and he gladly wrapped his arms a little tighter as she snuggled closer against him. "I love you too, baby," He returned just as softly, wondering what he'd ever done to deserve this girl. She was literally his entire world and without her... He didn't even want to think about that and especially not right now.
For a few long moments they just laid there and he could feel the gentle rise and fall of her breathing which was just as soothing to him as his was to her. Jesse wondered how he'd even slept for that year without her next to him at night. Honestly he hadn't really slept much at all and often only once he'd reached a point of utter exhaustion. Since Leila had come back into his life though that had all changed for the better and knowing that only made him love her even more because even after everything he'd told her she'd chosen to stay when most people would have walked out. And understandably so too. Not Leila though, she'd dove in head first, learning everything she could about werewolves so she could better help him. Everything she did was with his best interests in mind. There were really no words good enough to describe the depth of his feelings for this girl.
He'd absently started playing with her hair, loving how soft and silky it was. He hadn't closed his eyes or started getting too drowsy before she spoke up softly that whenever he was ready to talk about tonight she was ready to listen. There was no pressure, no judgement in her voice, just understanding and although he wasn't sure he wanted to explore the possibilities of what could have happened tonight in the woods the security of knowing she'd be there for him was beyond comforting. A sudden though flickered through his mind then, a slightly unsettling one, brought on mostly by the fact that as secure and comforting as being with her left him feeling after this particular night it had to shake her up a little. "Leila," He hesitated slightly, "Do I ever make you feel nervous? That I might hurt you?"
Just saying the words made him almost physically wince but there was no denying the truth. He wasn't safe, especially on the night of the full moon, and though he was doing a lot better than when he'd first been turned he still wasn't always in complete control. Knowing that scared him half to death and it certainly had to bother Leila too.

i will hold on as long as you like faded - wearing tank and shorts - lyrics by mumford&sons In all honesty, Leila wouldn’t trade any of this for the world. Maybe having a boyfriend who turned into a wolf every full moon wasn’t every little girl’s fantasy and having a boyfriend who your entire family believed was dead wasn’t exactly ideal, but Leila knew she was exactly where she needed to be. She really couldn’t think of being anywhere else in all reality, not without Jesse there too. It had always been like that, ever since they were little kids. Their parents had known each other and had been friends, so it was only natural that her and Jesse had grown up so close. When you grew up with someone like that, it was impossible to not imagine them being in your life forever.
It had been one of the reasons it had taken the two awhile to even consider being in a relationship. Since they had been friends since diapers, Leila had never really felt the need to classify her and Jesse’s relationship as anything. He had just always been a constant in her life. It was just a fact of Leila, as much as having brown eyes or a big smile was. That was just that. It wasn’t until seventh grade when everyone seemed being on figuring out who was dating who when Leila felt the pressure to define what she and Jesse had. It was then that she had realized she had feelings beyond just friendship for Jesse. In fact, Leila would’ve gone as far as to categorize it as a massive crush. Of course, she had been too afraid of saying anything at that point for fear of pushing him away. She’d much rather have Jesse in her life as platonic friends than not at all because she didn’t think she could deal with the alternative.
Even after Jesse had been presumed dead, Leila still couldn’t imagine living her life without him. She sounded like one of those dumb girls who couldn’t survive without her man in her life, but it was true. Jesse had been as much of a part of Leila as everything else was and losing him was like losing part of herself. It was one of the reasons it had taken Leila so long to move on when she finally realized he wasn’t coming back. Or really, not moving on per say, but more of getting to the point where she didn’t fall apart when she saw Jesse’s favorite food at the grocery store or heard their song on the radio. She still couldn’t picture really being anywhere without him though, even with all of that.
Now that he was back in her life, Leila didn’t want to be anywhere but here, snuggled up close to Jesse’s side with his fingers playing with her hair. If the girl ever had to describe her heaven, it’d be this. She probably could’ve drifted off to sleep if there hadn’t been that sense of urgency to let Jesse know he could talk to her about anything and everything and not have to worry about it. While she genuinely meant that, she hadn’t expected the question she had gotten from Jesse. Leila should’ve known this would come up sooner or later. Jesse had left Montana because of the fear of hurting someone and while she knew their reunion was a good thing, that fear still had to be at the back of his mind. She had just kind of assumed that he knew she felt safe with him always, even when he came home covered in blood.
Leila propped herself up on her elbow so she could make better eye contact with Jesse and slowly considered her answer. It hurt her to know he thought that, but she also didn’t want to give him a panicky answer either because she doubted that would be very comforting. Besides, panicking wasn’t really Leila’s style. She liked to think things through before she opened her mouth, wanted a well rounded thought before she said something wrong. “Jesse,” Leila started, putting as much love behind his name as she could. “I’m not afraid of you or anything you could do.” That was a genuine statement.
It might be hard to believe, especially after tonight’s events, but Leila truly wasn’t afraid of Jesse nor did she think she’d ever be. He wouldn’t hurt a fly, not on purpose at least. While he might not have control over himself when he was a werewolf, she knew he took as many precautions as he could to make sure he wouldn’t hurt anyone. Of course, it didn’t mean that she couldn’t get hurt, but she doubted it was a likely thing. “I know the risks of having a werewolf boyfriend,” she said, the words bringing a small smile to her face. That definitely wasn’t something she had thought she’d ever say in complete seriousness before all of this.
The silly mood didn’t last long though, because Leila felt like that wasn’t enough to reassure him. She knew how Jesse could worry and she wanted him to know beyond any doubt that she was safe with him. “Jesse. I love you,” the girl repeated, feeling like she could never say that to him enough. She lightly put her hand against the side of his face, her thumb gently stroking his cheekbone. “And when I say that, I mean everything. The good, the bad, the ups, the downs. Everything.” Leila smiled and leaned in, placing a kiss on the tip of Jesse’s nose. There was nothing that could ever change that.
just promise me we'll be alright
