we move towards the stars all that we touch becomes ours. | Last night…last night had been way too much for Natalie. That was a rare statement for the girl. She was no stranger to a wild night, of course, but she’d rarely admit to pushing her limits on a frequent (and probably more than healthy) basis. As long as she could function the next day, what did it matter? That was Natalie’s point of view. It was no secret that she had a live life with no regrets mentality which could lead her to trouble every so often. Still, it never deterred her. She rarely learned from her mistakes like that. Instead, she marked it as a one-time bad experience that would never happen again.
At least, that was pretty much what she was doing now. This morning, she had woken up in some random guy’s bed with little recollection of how she had gotten there or what had happened the night before and an absolutely awful hangover. She couldn’t even recognize the guy next to her who was, luckily, still asleep. Really not wanting to remember any of those details, Nat gathered her clothes, slipping into the jeans she had worn here plus the guy's shirt (she couldn't seem to find hers and his was right there), and sneaked out without making too much commotion. She didn’t want to deal with any of that, not when her head was pounding and she felt like she was going to puke if she didn’t get the alcohol out of her system.
Yet, she also was in no hurry to head back to her apartment. She always hated going back there. It was so empty and barren, considering that she was still trying to make the place feel like home. To Nat, it was downright depressing to be in that place without some sort of company. She had never been one to want to be alone and the mostly empty apartment always reminded her of that. So no. None of that. But the question was where? There were very few places Natalie could go with this pounding headache and not be bothered by everyone else. The problem was her brain was being sluggish and she couldn’t even begin to come up with a place.
Finally, her brain settled on one. Coffee. She needed the caffeine to kick start her everything and get herself out of this funk. And hopefully, it wouldn’t be too busy. Not yet, at least. Besides, most of the time, the patrons of Steaming Bean seemed to have the volume control set relatively low so Natalie wouldn’t have to worry about making her headache even worse. Seemed like a win-win situation as far as she could tell. So Steaming Bean it was, despite the obviously rumpled clothing and crazy messy hair. Appearance was one of the last things on Natalie’s mind, especially once she hit the coffee shop and was instantly surrounded in the comforting smell of coffee.
She waited mostly patiently in line, a tad disappointed that it was longer than she had thought it’d be at this time of day, and was quite nearly ecstatic when it was finally her turn. Natalie ordered the first thing that came to mind – a large coffee with space for cream – and watched it being poured into a cup. Natalie wrapped her hands around the cup the moment it was placed in front of her, thinking there was no better feeling than this warm drink. The happy feeling continued until the barista told Nat the price of her coffee and she went to pay for it.
Fuck. Where on earth was Natalie’s wallet? She triple checked her pockets, digging for it. Until, of course, she remembered that she didn’t have her wallet. The girl never brought that with her when she went to the bar. Typically, she slipped some money in her bra and used that to buy drinks. On most nights, she didn’t use all of it because she could normally get a guy to buy her a drink or two. Natalie honestly couldn’t remember if she had spent it all last night or not, but even if she hadn’t, it was most likely on that guy’s floor. Oh jeez. She didn’t want to deal with this right now, not when there was a whole line behind her that she was holding up. That, and well, she wasn’t about to give up this life saving coffee.
“I uh…I can’t seem to find my wallet,” Natalie explained, a charming smile on her face. Too bad it wasn’t a guy behind the counter or Nat could attempt to flirt her way out of it. It sounded awful, but Natalie wasn’t against manipulating people like that, especially when she was in a pinch such as now, but she almost always felt guilty afterwards. It’d seem as if the world was just not working with her today though, what with the awful hangover, the lack of a wallet, and a female barista. What else could life throw at her? It wasn’t even eight in the morning yet and she was already having a bad day.

don't over think just let it go Holden had always been a morning person. The sort who could wake up at five in the morning get up and be wide awake ready to go for a jog or to the gym or what have you. It was always so quiet and calm and he liked that. No blaring horns or sirens to disturb the peace as was the per usual sound dominating the city. He could get out and clear his head before work or following a hunt without anyone else around to question or bother him. His morning jog was probably the one routine he hadn't given up since he'd started doing it in high school after joining the track team. Sun, snow, rain didn't matter he was up and outside. His day never really felt right if he didn't get to jog first thing. Granted there were a few days where it hadn't happened but ninety-nine percent of the time it did and this morning had been no different.
Except instead of feeling energized and ready to tackle the day like he usually did after a run Holden felt like he was still dragging his feet. A quick shower upon returning home hadn't helped either and as he dressed in his usual attire of slacks and button-down dress shirt he already knew a coffee run was in order before he went to work. Caffeine was something he normally needed throughout the day to keep himself awake but he could honestly say he was something of a coffee addict. Decaf was all they served at the social services office though and that was a no go today. Sleep had been something of a rare thing for him lately, partly due to his day job and partially thanks to the tension that seemed to be running through the supernatural side of the world. And as a hunter that meant your job was only going to get harder and more dangerous. There was also the fact that something was up with Huxley and even though the kid insisted nothing was going on Holden was sure something was off.
Most of the time he could shut off all the thoughts running around through his brain when it came time to sleep but the last couple of weeks had proven difficult to say the least. The hunter hated feeling this way too, slightly groggy and not yet ready to face the world with a smile. Morning was his favorite time of day and he always felt like it was wasted when moods like this hit. Dressed and ready to go he jogged down the stairs before grabbing his keys on the counter and heading out the front door. Steaming Beans was right on his way to work which made things all that more convenient thankfully though honestly he was running early which turned out to be a good thing once he saw the line already formed inside the place. There were other cafe's in the city but this one in particular always seemed to be the busiest and Holden wasn't surprised seeing as he preferred their coffee over any of the others.
It was normally quieter as well, having a more relaxed atmosphere than its competitors could boast. The line was moving quickly enough too despite the length and he was almost to the counter when the girl ahead of him seemed to be having issues finding her wallet. A few seconds after the frantic search she proved that theory right with a sheepish admission, aiming a smile at the barista who looked less than impressed as she stated flatly, "I'm sorry, ma'am, but if you don't have any money you need to move so the other people can order," Clearly she had missed out on the customer relations part in orientation. Other people behind Holden could be heard starting to complain then, questioning what the hold up was and that they were in a hurry and other rather impatient remarks. Most people probably would have stepped away in slight embarrassment by this point but the girl seemed almost desperate to not give up the steaming cup of coffee in her hands. For whatever reason, though with him it honestly wouldn't have taken much, Holden took pity on her, understanding just how important that liquid was sometimes.
Stepping up beside her, he handed the barista a twenty. "How about you add a large black coffee to that order and we call it good," He offered the girl behind the counter a smile along with the words which brightened the previously annoyed look on her face. Taking the bill she tallied up the total for the two drinks and handed him the change a moment later as he ushered Natalie gently to the side to make way for the slightly disgruntled crowd behind them. "Rough morning?" He questioned sympathetically, hoping she didn't mind his having paid for her drink. WORDS: ENOUGH . TAGGED: NATALIE/KEL . NOTES: GAH SORRY SO ICKY |

we move towards the stars all that we touch becomes ours. | All she wanted was a simple cup of coffee. It wasn’t like she was asking for all that much. And yet she couldn’t give up the cup of coffee, even after the barista’s biting words and the angry grumbles from held up costumers behind her. Oh, she was embarrassed. Don’t get her wrong. She hated being so flustered and upset, especially in front of people. You couldn’t say she was all that big of a fan of scenes that didn’t paint her in a flattering light. It was probably ingrained in her core considering the fact that her mother had pretty much said more or less the same thing to her for as long as she could remember.
But right now? It didn’t matter to her. Natalie was going to stand there until she could think of some way to walk away with her coffee. Honestly, she was prepared to reduce herself to whining or pleading if it’d get the job done. The only problem she ran into was, well, what exactly was she supposed to say? The barista had every right to deny her the coffee, though Nat would have preferred she wasn’t quite so rude about it. Because what kind of excuse was “I just woke up in a strange man’s bed and my money is most likely still on his floor so I can’t pay for it but I really need this coffee?” Well, it pretty much just sounded crazy or entirely made up.
Natalie was almost in panic mode at this point, feeling as if the people behind her were only going to be begrudgingly patient for so much longer. And then pretty much out of nowhere, she heard the best words she could have heard at that moment. Someone was going to offer to pay for her coffee? And people said that there was no longer kindness in the world, only selfishness. No, good things could happen if there was reason for them to and this was no exception. Karma must have just been repaying Nat for a previous good deed she had committed.
It must have been an exceptionally good deed, seeing as how her savior could be described in no less words than a sex god. Natalie wasn’t over exaggerating either. Just from her quick once over of the guy, she took in his built figure that was still visible even through his clothes, his bright blue eyes, and super strong jawline. And on top of that, he must’ve had a big heart, seeing as how he paid for her coffee. Well, that or he was as impatient with her as the rest of them had been, but she much preferred the first situation. Yep, Nat couldn’t say exactly what she had done to deserve this guy to be the one who helped her out, but she definitely appreciated whatever fates were smiling down upon her today.
“Rough night, turning into a rough morning,” Natalie agreed, running a hand through her hair. She suddenly wished she looked more put together than she did right now. Nat knew her hair had to be all over the place. She should have taken time to pin it up or something. And she hadn’t had the chance to glance in a mirror yet today, but she could only imagine that her makeup was smudged and gross. Natalie should have taken a couple more minutes to make herself more presentable before going into public. In her defense, she hadn’t expected to run into a sex god on a little coffee run, but still. She’d feel ten times more confident if she looked better.
Well, there wasn’t much she could do about it now. She was just going to have to roll with it and put the worry of her appearance in the back of her mind. Because this guy had paid for her coffee, Natalie owed him and she was going to use that to her advantage. Anyone would, right? “Thanks for the coffee,” she started, motioning towards the guy with her coffee cup. “But you do realize this means I owe you, right?” Natalie asked, a smile on her lips. She really did need to pay him back. Even if he wasn’t a sex god, she’d still insist. Nat hated feeling like she owed people and would have wanted to pay anyone back for their act of kindness.

don't over think just let it go Holden liked to consider himself a patient man. Growing up it had sort of become a trait that he'd been forced to cultivate taking care of Huxley and pretty much being the man of the house. Being a social worker required a good amount of it as well seeing as you were dealing with people who weren't normally too happy to see you around them or their kids. Suffice it to say he was one of the very few patrons in line that was not grumbling as the red haired girl brought the line to a halt, missing her wallet it would seem from what he could hear. The barista was not being all that sympathetic or even friendly about it either, which slightly annoyed Holden for the girl's sake. Everyone was human after all and crap happened.
Thankfully he was only one other person behind her and stepping in to intervene had been fairly easy to do. Funny what waving that green paper at someone could do to change their attitude. The girl behind the counter went from annoyed to cheery smile as he gave her that twenty dollar bill, happily adding on his own order to it. He'd surprised her, the girl without a wallet, at least judging from the expression on her face as she glanced over at him after he paid for both their drinks. He missed the appreciation over the appearance of her rescuer though, busy taking and putting the change back into his wallet. Holden never really had been the sort of guy who took a lot of noticed over when he was being checked out or being flirted with mostly because he always had other things on his mind to worry about.
So he simply took her smile for what it mostly was though, appreciation at getting her out of that tough spot. His comment brought a rueful look to her features and she ran a hand through her hair self consciously, agreeing and adding to his assessment of things. He didn't have to think too much to guess what might have caused the rough night, especially seeing how important getting that cup of coffee had been to her. Not that he was judging her by any stretch of the imagination. Empathizing more than anything. He wasn't one to go out and get dead drunk often, only had a couple of times in his life so far actually but he remembered very well how the next morning felt. So if this girl's night had been anything similiar to that and who knew what else added to it well he could understand needing the drink so badly.
The two drinks were placed on the counter in front of them at that moment and he took his as she did the same with hers, thanking him a few seconds later after a first tenative sip. Smiling, he popped back the little plastic covering on the lid of his 'to go' cup. "Not a problem. You seemed pretty desperate for it, which I can definitely understand, been there plenty of times myself," He kept his voice light, not wanting her to feel awkward for having a complete stranger pay for her drink. Holden shook his head a bit as she insisted she owed him for it though. "Really it's no big deal. I didn't do it expecting you to pay me back or anything," Anyone who demanded payment for doing a good deed might as well not bother doing them as far as he was concerned. Helping her out had been the right thing to do and was the sole reason he'd done it. "I'm Holden, by the way," He introduced, figuring she should at least know his name. And he was a little curious to find out her name as well, if she decided to offer it that is. WORDS: ENOUGH . TAGGED: NATALIE/KEL . NOTES: GAH SORRY SO ICKY |

we move towards the stars all that we touch becomes ours. | This guy was more than just a real life sex god. That much Natalie could tell. He was quite possibly the biggest sweetheart on the face of the planet. And in Nat’s experience, that was a near impossible occurrence. In books and movies? Sure. In real life? Never. The overly good looking sex gods were almost always jerks and the sweethearts were the kinds of guys you didn’t necessarily drool over. Maybe it sounded cruel, but that had been Natalie’s experience. And well, she had to say that she had dated her share of both types of guys and none of the relationships had ever gone anywhere.
How this guy existed, Natalie didn’t understand. But she wasn’t about to take this moment for granted. The girl had always been a huge believer in fate and she wasn’t about to believe that meeting this guy was a coincidence. Because honestly, he was probably the best person for Natalie to run into in her current situation. Who else would be so patient with a mess of a girl? There were very few people, especially when said people hadn’t had their daily dose of caffeine yet. She was lucky that this guy had been standing behind her in line and someone else wasn’t. And well, Natalie couldn’t let someone so perfect get away.
“Entirely desperate,” Nat agreed with a slight nod. She turned the cup a couple times in her hands to warm her cold fingers. The girl opened the coffee cup to let the drink cool off a bit and reached for creamer. Once she was satisfied, she put the lid back on, swirled the cup, and took a sip. Yup, the coffee was already starting to make her feel better. “You’re an actual lifesaver,” she informed the guy, honestly not sure what she would’ve done if he hadn’t been there. Well, she would’ve been crazy embarrassed, for one. That was a given. But she wasn’t sure what she would’ve done without this coffee.
Except he was trying to brush the entire thing off, like it wasn’t important. Natalie found herself instantly shaking her head no. No. He had to realize that it was a big deal to Natalie. Plus, it gave her a way to talk to him again. “Oh, no! I don’t think you realize how much I needed this coffee.” Though she did have to admit, him initially refusing her paying him back was showing even more about his character. Honestly, Nat was pretty sure she could spend all day with him and only continue to find him more perfect. Seriously. He probably didn’t have a single flaw.
Even his name sounded perfect. Holden. “Like Catcher in the Rye Holden? Natalie asked, attempting to sound like she was a well read individual. Though, to be honest, Natalie had never finished that book. In fact, she had only gotten through the first couple of pages before she put it down and never came back to it. It hadn’t held her attention that long, mostly because the girl was all about love stories and that book had little to nothing to do with that. Still, she remembered it enough to know the main character’s name and that was what counted right now. “Natalie,” the girl said back, figuring he should know her name, too.
She took another sip of her coffee before motioning to one of the empty tables in the café. “Do you have time to sit and chat for a little?” Nat asked, thinking it’d be nice to get to know Holden some. She had nothing else planned for today so it’d be nice to socialize some. Of course, only if he could. Natalie didn’t want to keep him if he had somewhere to be. So it was really up to him and his schedule at this point. Even if he couldn’t sit and talk for a little, Natalie had no intentions of letting him leave without getting his number though.

don't over think just let it go If Holden had known what was going on in the pretty red-head's mind right now he probably would have ducked his head and smiled self-consciously, possibly turned a bit red faced as well. Flattered he most definitely would have been but he honestly didn't consider himself any better looking than all your other average joes out there. She might not have been able to spend as much time with them as she wished but if there was one thing he and Hux's mother had done was teach her boys the value of humility. It didn't matter what you looked like, how much money you had or how popular you were you were no better than anyone else around you and everyone deserved to be treated with respect. She had drilled that into him and he in turn had done the same with Huxley and he could say with a bit of appropriately placed pride that his brother had turned out well.
He liked to think he'd turned out fairly well himself but when presented with moments like this he wanted to say that he hadn't done anything any other decent person wouldn't step up and do too. Which was actually probably not as true as he would have liked to think sadly enough but still, there was no need for this girl to go out of her way to make sure she repaid him. He was just glad he was there to help out at the right moment. He was never running this early for work. Ever. He was always on time mind you but running so early he had time to kill just wasn't his normal routine. Some people might say it was just a happy coincedence that it happened to be this day and he had ended up standing behind her but Holden was a strong believer in the 'everything happens for a reason' school of thought.
A slight smile and shrug followed her remark that he was an actual lifesaver, finding her sincerity over it adorable even if he didn't think he deserved the title. She kept insisting how much it meant to her, that he didn't understand how desperate she had been for that cup of coffee and he chuckled lightly. "Ok then how about instead of paying me back you take that money and buy someone else's coffee someday when they're in the same predicament and consider us even," Even though he didn't want her feeling as if she owed him he could understand the desire to want to repay someone for doing you a favor. And what better way to do that than help someone else out? Hopefully she'd at least consider it if nothing else.
His eyebrows went up in pleasant surprise as she asked if his name was take from the Holden in Catcher in the Rye. "I'm impressed," He remarked with a slow smile spreading across his lips. "I think a grand total of two people who weren't my literature teachers have guessed that my entire life," Most people just took it as a different sounding sort of name but that was it. There was no denying it wasn't your average name and he'd received his fair share of ridicule for it growing up but he wouldn't have changed it for the world. Now as an adult it was something that made him stand out, something that people remembered because of it's uniqueness and he liked that. She did tell him her name just as he had hoped and he smiled, liking how it fit her. At her question he glanced down at his watch for a split second. He was pleased to see he actually did still have time left to kill. "I have a little bit of time until I need to get to work," He returned, oddly happy with that little fact despite not even knowing this bubbly, caffiene deprived girl for more than a few moments.
Pulling out the chair right next to him at the counter space sized just for two people to share, he motioned for her to go ahead and sit down."So do you live here in Manuka or just visiting?" She looked college aged at the very least and considering the university wasn't far from here it was possible she could be here for that reason. Either way he couldn't recall seeing her ever, not that he was necessarily a social bug when it came to going out to the hot places in the city. Still it also meant he hadn't run into her on a hunt either which was even more of a relief. WORDS: ENOUGH . TAGGED: NATALIE/KEL . NOTES: GAH SORRY TOOK SO LONG! |
