Riley didn’t know what to do right now. A few nights ago he had gotten drunk and had slept with one of his childhood friends, Julian. So many things were running through his mind right now including the big question: Was Riley gay? He had a headache thinking about it, which is exactly what he had been doing for the past few days. He had no clue how it had happened nor how he felt about it or Julian. His emotions were mixed and he was confused. He needed something to do or someone to talk to. The person he would have gone to in a situation like this was Damon. But he hadn’t yet showed Damon that he was alive only as a demon. The only people that knew about that were Darby and Julian—two people he wouldn’t go to in a situation like this. Darby because she’d probably freak out and would likely not know what to say and Julian because he was the person Riley was freaking out about. So he had no one. He could go to someone that he hadn’t known before dying, but that only left Natalie and he didn’t know her well enough to talk to her about fucking a guy, which was still new to him. Natalie was a great girl and someone he was comfortable around and he would probably go to her on any other situation. But this seemed like too much. He didn’t want to freak her out or something. Riley thought their friendship was actually going somewhere and that was something he didn’t want to go to waste. Sure they had fooled around a little, but the coffee they had had together had only ended in a little kiss. Riley found himself wanting to actually talk to her before rushing into something with her. He knew it was probably because he still had Issy on his mind. He threw himself off of his bed. He didn’t want to think about any of this right now. He really needed to get the hell out of here and clear his mind. He didn’t know where to go though. His family could be anywhere and could see him. So as usual he would have to go through his day as a ghost, invisible to everyone. Before leaving though he did take a shower and change into comfortable khaki shorts and a green polo. He tied the leather on his brown Sperry’s and walked out the door. He immediately went transparent and watched his surroundings. So far there was no one around to see the door to his house open and close, so he had nothing to worry about. Riley walked towards town with his hands in his pockets, not that anyone could see him doing so. He finally reached the steaming beans. He smelled the coffee and knew that was where he wanted to go. Riley used to come here all the time. Lately though he had stayed away from any place he used to frequent just because he was afraid someone he knew from before he died would be here. As he looked around though, no one familiar was around. So he went into the bathroom and solidified himself. When he came out, there was a line of a few people. He stood at the end of it and waited patiently, also glancing over his shoulder every so often just to keep an eye on the door should someone come in that could recognize him. lonely eyes watching meI CAN SEE WHAT YOU WANT ME TO SEE There wasn't much for him to do anymore. Before everything happened it felt like he had no time for anything. Stress was a basic part of his day. Now he found himself finishing his work a lot faster and wishing he could pick up more shifts at work. He only had a few more years until residency, then he could aim for a PhD so his schedule would be filled up again. Derek found himself alone a lot more lately. His mind was a mess. There was so much confusion going through that guy's body he had no idea what to do with himself and he was already a wreck when it came to socializing anyways. It had started with Weston and then moved to a guy he met at a bar. Derek had thought he had already made a move on Weston because he was drunk, but he was perfectly sober at the bar with Shane. He had tried his best to resist all of the advances from the man and it had been quite difficult.
Then came Kennedy. He met her when he was supposed to be having a business bewbs lunch and she was also the cause of the confusion. Just when he was sure he wouldn't be attracted to another female she popped up and fucked his mind up even more. Now he just wasn't sure what was going on with his body. He was too old to be going through that shit. Derek had actually Googled what to do, which he was too embarrassed to even think of. It was relief that it was normal for someone to be sexually confused at his age. Derek just wished all of it would come to a surface so he could figure it out. He just stayed inside so much there was no way it could. Derek was afraid of even looking at anybody. It wasn't like he had any friends that blew up his phone whenever he was MIA for a few days looking to hang out anyways. That depressed him even further.
He had a few classes to go to that day, so getting out of bed was a necessity. It felt like hours as Derek dragged himself out of bed and into the shower. He grabbed an apple and his things and made his way out of the door. It still felt odd to know Vaeda wasn't there. He wanted so badly to talk to her. Tell her what was happening to him. She was his best friend before all the shit hit the fan. Now he felt empty now that his best friend wouldn't talk to him. Derek felt like he had nobody to turn to and he had never felt so isolated and lonely in his whole life. He took a large chunk out of the apple as he took the elevator to the car garage. Derek tossed what was remaining of the apple before he got into his car and sped off.
A few hours later he emerged from school and climbed into his car. He opened the mirror above his head and stared at his reflection. Derek hadn't shaved in quite awhile and it made him actually look his age for once. The tinge of dark circles on his eyes added to it. Derek jumped when his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and ignored the call when he saw it was his father calling. Lately his parents were up his ass because they were worried about him. He had changed a lot in the past few months. Derek's moods swung all over the place and he snapped a lot more than usual. They kept asking him to go see a therapist. Which only angered him more. He was fine.
The werewolf closed the visor and pulled out and began to drive around aimlessly. He didn't want to go back to that depressing apartment. Derek was approaching the center of town and he decided he might as well stop and get a coffee to wake himself up. He parked his car and grabbed his things to head in. After a bit of a wait he was sitting at a table by himself in the corner drinking a tall coffee and eating a pastry while he read over his textbook. Derek leaned back and stared around the small shop and his eyes stopped a young man who came out of the bathroom. Derek hadn't seen him come in and he had been there for quite some time. He felt like he had seen him before, but he saw a lot of the people in the shop before as well so it didn't really alarm him or anything. Derek knew a lot of people and they knew him, they just weren't very friendly with one another.
The guy kept glancing over his shoulder every so often. Either he was waiting for someone or didn't want to be seen. Derek decided it was none of his business, so he buried his face back into his book. He became bored and uninterested seconds later and looked back up at the line. Derek people watched a lot when he had nothing better to do anyways, but this particular boy was a lot more interesting for some reason. The guy was good looking, no doubt, but he didn't want to admit that to himself. Derek glanced down again and tried his best to look like he was doing something and not staring at people like a complete stalker.

All of his life he had always had family and friends surrounding him, supporting him, being his confidants. He always had someone to talk to or vent to or just sit with quietly while he thought of a solution to whatever problem was going on in his life at the time. But since his death he had had no one to talk to or share his grief or revelations with. Riley didn’t know anyone other than Julian that he could talk to and he couldn’t talk to the ghost about what he was going through. Riley would feel awkward about it even though he knew he shouldn’t. If only he was able to sack up and tell his family he was alive—well, in a sense. He would feel so much better if he were able to get this off his chest. Even talking to a stranger would do. Rolling his shoulders, Riley looked around the coffee shop. The past couple of times he had come to this place it had been insanely packed. Whoever owned this place made some serious money because everyone knew it was the best place to get coffee in town. Starbucks was no comparison even. Riley had never really thought about small local shops before, but thinking about it now, it was kind of nice that a big corporation wasn’t running things around here. Riley shook his head, forgetting about the nonsense in his head and tried to decide on what to get. He wasn’t picky about his coffee, but he did know he was in the mood for something sweet today instead of his normal cup of black coffee. Caramel was out of the question, but that mocha frappa-whatever sounded like just the thing. When it was his turn to order that’s exactly what he said, making the girl behind the counter laugh. Riley smiled at her and gave her a good tip and then he moved out of the way to let the guy behind him order. Riley shoved his hands in his pockets and checked around the area to make sure the coast was still clear. And then he spotted a man looking at him. Riley found himself smiling before he realized it and bit the inside of his cheek. Riley thought he was attractive and felt his fingers itching to run through his hair. Hearing his name called out letting him know his coffee was ready made him jolt a little. He turned around and took his drink, smiling nicely at the girl who handed him his drink. When he turned and glanced back at the man, he had already stuck his nose into the book that sat at his table. Riley didn’t want to disturb him so he sat at another table, facing the man, from across the room. Riley took out his phone and texted Julian about wanting to hang out soon then played Candy Crush for a while. Occasionally Riley would look back up at the guy to make sure he was still there. Riley didn’t even know why he was so drawn to him. It could be that he was attractive and didn’t look like an idiot (obviously because he was reading textbooks). A lot of people around Manuka looked like ditsy people and only when Riley wanted a one-night stand did he ever go for those kinds of people. He wanted some substance when it came to relationships. Issy had been bright and artsy and all around brilliant and he missed having her around. She had been the light of his life until Toby had killed her. But Riley didn’t want to think about that. So instead he turned his mind elsewhere. After his night with Julian he had been rethinking his entire sexuality. He hadn’t realized it until after that night how attracted guys could be. His world had turned upside down and he had thought it was a bad thing, but he didn’t think so now. He hadn’t exactly gotten used to the idea that he could possibly be bisexual, but he was curious about it and wanted to explore whatever his attractions were. At the moment the only thing catching his eye was the bookworm sitting across the room. Riley had picked up a few schoolgirls in his time back before he died, but how did one pick up a man? Riley wished he could talk to Calan about this because his cousin was the only gay man he knew that he would feel comfortable talking about bewbs picking up guys with. Hopefully Calan didn’t have a lot of experience in that department since he was with Shay, but he should know more about it than Riley. Riley was a doer. He hated sitting around thinking about things. When he wanted something, he got it and when he wanted to get to know somebody he did it. Instead of sitting around thinking about how to talk to the guy, he pushed out of his seat and walked over to the man’s table. “Hi,” he started. Riley set his drink down on the table and slid into the chair across from him. “You look like you could use a break from that.” Riley gave him a charming smile and sipped from his Frappuccino. Instead of thinking about this like he was trying to hit on him, Riley decided that he was just making a new friend. “What’re you studying?” he wondered. lonely eyes watching meI CAN SEE WHAT YOU WANT ME TO SEE It's extremely difficult to explain the troubles Derek has with interacting with people. When it's time for business he can talk up a storm confidently, but as soon as it came to personal things he choked up. That was when the stuttering came into play and he'd throw in the corny jokes because of his nerves. He had no clue how Vaeda even found him appealing or anybody really. Derek barely spoke and when he did he was stuttering up a storm. He had so much he wanted to say, but nothing ever seemed right and he ended up just feeling stupid afterwards. Derek had been dealing with that shit for awhile and he was so damn tired of it. He was nearing his thirties and he still had trouble communicating with other people in age. There was nothing wrong with not having a lot of friends, but damn he'd like to at least be able to make a friend or two if he wanted. It wasn't like he was afraid of people or anything, he just had no clue how to start off a conversation or keep it. He was so used to other people carrying it along for him, now he was just lost. Derek needed to loosen up and as many times he had tried to it didn't work. The last time he tried to "loosen up" he ended up trying to battle tongues with Weston. Which was embarrassing as hell.
Derek picked up his pencil off of the table and tapped it gently as he tried his best to concentrate. Out of the corner of his eye he was watching the guy and focusing his hearing on him. He shook his head and turned the page of his book and just stared at the words, not reading them. Derek hadn't had human interaction in God knew how long. The only time he talked to people was whenever he went to class and it was brief usually. He hated that he had pushed all his friends away when he was with Vaeda. She was all the friend he needed at the time really and now that she was gone he was so alone. He was trying to avoid telling his parents they had broken up because they'd really go make him see a therapist. They thought the answer to every problem was to go see the psychiatrist. At first it had just started out with family and couples counseling. Now his mom went whenever she could find an excuse to go. It made him sick. His family was really fucked up. They were all money and business, which was probably why he had such difficulty speaking with others because he never really spoke to his parents growing up. Derek didn't really like to think too much about his family. He was an only child who had rich parents and that was that. There wasn't much else to it.
His heart nearly fell into his stomach when he saw the guy had realized he was staring at him. Derek played it off coolly and simply looked down at his book. His eyes widened slightly as he mumbled slightly something quietly to himself. The werewolf felt like such an idiot, but he'd get over it quickly. He did embarrass himself a lot, so he had learned how to not let it bother him as much or just more or less forget about it. It wasn't like the guy catching him staring at him would ruin his life. Well, if the guy came over and yelled at him or something (or worse, punched him) , then yeah he'd be worried. He was just being dramatic though. Some guys were really weird about other guys being able to appreciate another guys handsomeness. What was so wrong about admitting that another guy is nice looking? Women do it all the time. They can call other women pretty and it's not a problem, so why can't guys do it? It was such a stupid double standard and showed what idiots men could be sometimes.
Derek's eyes grazed up slightly when the barista called out a name. The boy stepped up and grabbed his coffee and went to sit down on the other side of the shop. Riley. Nice name. Derek looked down at his book and got in a few paragraphs before he realized someone was across from him. He looked up and his whole face flushed. What? Derek couldn't help but find himself smiling gently as the guy pulled out the chair across from him and sat down. Wow this guy was the complete opposite of him. Fearless. So, either bewbes this Riley guy was coming over here because he was simply friendly was going to threaten him. Okay, he said "Hi", so he had to be friendly. He could relax a bit."Hi," Derek answered back with a small chuckle. It just escaped out of nervousness. This dude could be a model or something. What was he doing in Manuka. Well, there were models in Manuka, so Derek could scratch out that the guy shouldn't be in Manuka. Gorgeous man. Derek could not take his eyes off of him. It was weird. Usually Derek avoided eye contact mostly or kept it to a minimum. He had sparkling brown eyes that he could just not look away from. So odd.
He leaned back and looked down at his book as Riley gestured to it. A small laugh and a nod was his response."Yeah, I've p-pretty much memorized the same few p-pages in the last hour." Derek put his face in his hands for a second and shook his head."So t-thanks." He flashed him another smile. Derek picked up his drink and took a few long sips and set it down as Riley threw out a question at him. He played with the edge of the book's binding as he answered his question,"Oh, um, neurosurgery. I'm trying t-to become a brain s-surgeon." Derek nodded and looked down at his hands for a second and back up at him."It t-takes a toll on the brain." He said with slight sarcasm. Derek knew after his first corny joke if someone was compatible with him. He laughed and put his face in his hands for a second."Sorry, bad joke." Derek shook his head at himself and picked at the doughnut he got. He looked back up at Riley and hoped he would not just get up and leave after that joke flop.
