come up for air! There was one thing that not many people knew about Marnie and that was the fact that she liked comic books. Well, not just liked, but loved. Obsessed, really. It wasn’t something you’d expect from the girl, considering she really seemed like a no nonsense person. You’d expect her to be into reading old, dusty law books or something that seemed more grown up or boring, since that was typically up Marnie’s alley. Grown up and boring. It was basically the best adjectives to describe the girl and comic books definitely didn’t fit there. And she sure kept it a secret from people, thinking that if people knew she loved comic books, they’d view her as less mature than she really was.
But comic books were a thing Marnie had enjoyed ever since she was a little girl. It had something to do with the superheroes, and how they could use their differences for the good of everyone. For a little girl who had just figured out she could control fire, they were practically a miracle. See, while her parents were both firetamers, they never told her about it. The elder Jacobs had kind of assumed that there was a chance she’d be born human and they didn’t want to freak her out if it wasn’t necessary. And they thought that if she had inherited the firetaming gene, she wouldn’t show signs of it until she was older. But an eight year old Marnie had discovered what she was while her parents had been on a two month long Europe trip while her mother had toured her latest book on child psychology. Marnie hadn’t gone along because her parents hadn’t wanted her to miss that much school, but it had left her alone with this new discovery.
With lacks of a better avenue, the little girl had decided to turn to comic books, where people with powers seemed to be the norm. While she hadn’t found too much useful information in them, it had been enough to calm Marnie and to keep her from thinking she was a freak until her parents came home and explained the entire thing to her. But for those two months? Superheroes had been her role models. Superman had been her favorite since he felt like such an outsider to everyone and Marnie had entertained the idea for a week or two that maybe she was an alien from outer space who had been sent to earth to learn about humans. Of course that idea had been quickly shot down, but it didn’t stop her from loving Superman. And Wonder Woman had been another favorite, because who didn’t love a kickass woman? But the one Marnie had most closely related to was the Human Torch, simply because of his powers.
Even after Marnie’s parents had come home and had explained that she was, in fact. not a superhero with early appearing powers, she still held this soft spot for superheroes. She’d go to the comic book shop whenever she got a chance, pick up the latest issue and all that. Since Marnie had moved to Manuka two years ago, she hadn’t found much time to go the comic book store here between her classes and her internship at the law firm. But for once, Marnie had a little time off and she had decided she needed to wind down with some good old comic book reading. Why not go pick out a new comic book?
The store, Marnie thought, was rather homey for a comic book store. She had yet to find a store she didn’t like, but she had to admit some were better than others. There had been a couple that Marnie had wandered into that were dim and dark and had an overly musty smell. She would avoid those if she had the option to. But she rarely found one as comfortable as this comic book shop. Marnie walked in and felt like she belonged. It was rather stupid, but that was how she felt. She smiled at the guy behind the counter – who she had to admit was rather cute, not that it meant anything to her – and headed straight for the racks of comic books, looking for something that caught her interest.

I'M JUST SAYING IT'S FINE BY ME IF YOU NEVER LEAVE If there was one thing Goose was thankful for it was that he was able to get up in the morning and genuinely say he loved going to his job. Of course he had the advantage of being able to call himself the guy in charge as well as the only employee therefore no horrible bosses or annoying co-workers either. Though he was planning on changing that only employee bit at some point. He wasn't open on Sundays currently just to give himself a day off to get other stuff done but other than that he was there every day from 9 to 5 during the week and 10 to 4 on Saturdays. He loved it, he really did, but there were times when having someone to take over for him if something came up or he just needed a day away would be nice. Still he was rather picky when it came to who he'd let fill that spot seeing as not only was the place practically his baby but there were some rather expensive and rare comic books and collectables in the store as well. Hiring just anyone off the street therefore was a definite nono.
He planned on giving it some more thought before doing anything about it though which meant that today he was still helming the place single-handedly as per usual. Arriving a half hour before it was time to open he went about opening the new boxes of comic books and other items that were delivered by Gus the FedEx Man, as Goose liked to call him. By the time he got everything new out on the floor for people to grab up it was time to open his doors for business and like clockwork the regulars began trickling in the entrance. There was Dave the diehard Marvel fan who bought every single new issue the day it came out. Where he got his money Goose didn't even want to know. Then you had Agnes, the cutest little old lady that looked like she was the quintessential grandma but actually was a black belt and had once been a spy during Vietnam. Or so she said. Goose liked to think it was true though simply because of the awesome factor.
Adults of all ages, kids and sometimes even a pet here and there all came and went on a daily basis just about and he pretty much knew all of them by name. Names and faces he'd always been good with even as a kid. It definitely helped out now seeing as a big thing in running a successful business like this was making your customers feel like you weren't just taking them for granted. Goose was a people person as it was anyway and honestly he loved chatting with them all, hearing their stories, getting to know them and basically geeking out over everything comic-related. Today was no different and the morning flew by fairly quickly and he found himself thinking about what he felt like ordering for lunch today when the bell above the door jangled. Glancing up from the counter where he stood he for once didn't recognize the face and it wasn't one he would have been likely to forget.
A pretty smile parted her lips as she looked his direction momentarily before moving farther into the store, perusing the racks in a relaxed manner. It never failed to amuse (and sometimes annoy depending on the situation) Goose the sort of stereotypes people had when it came to the type of people who frequented comic book stores. Most expected your glasses wearing, acne-faced geek sort when it came to guys and the same with any girls who might be into that sort of thing. So when people not fitting that mold showed up it always seemed to draw surprised stares. Goose had to admit he was staring a bit this time too but for a very different reason entirely. Woah ok man get a grip. You see pretty girls every day, no need to stare like a seventh grader at this one. Forcing his attention back to the order forms he was filling out he eventually moved out from behind the counter, a small stack of comic books that needed put back in their correct spot in his hands.
Sticking a few in their appropriate spots he glanced to the side and couldn't help but notice the pretty brunette again. "Looking for anything in particular?" He asked with a smile, figuring it couldn't hurt to at least see if she needed legit assistance. It was his job after all. Yep, just doing his job.

come up for air! Honestly, the firetamer couldn’t believe she had never been in here. Or really, she knew why she hadn’t been to this comic book store. Life got in the way and of course Marnie was very much work before play. If she had had time, she would’ve stopped. Now though, she was getting to realize how much she had missed out when focusing on her job only. She had two years that she could’ve shopped here – literally the best comic book store she thought she had ever walked into – and she was only taking the initiative to do so now. That was what happened when you constantly told yourself you were too busy to enjoy life, she assumed.
But she could make up for that now, couldn’t she? Of course Marnie didn’t have the time to be at the comic book store every day or anything, but she’d have to make time to get her at least a couple of times a month. It’d give her a chance to replenish her comic book supply at a relatively regular interval because Marnie didn’t like when she ran out of stuff to read. She liked to have everything planned out and always thought further ahead than she needed to. However, Marnie had been out of new comic books for a while now. It hadn’t mattered too much, considering the girl hadn’t had time to read anything other than work related stuff. It just meant the girl had to buy a rather large stack of comic books to get her through until the next time she could come here.
Though, maybe not too big of a stack, she thought as the store owner came over towards Marnie and started putting comic books away near where she was standing. The firetamer had a very strict no dating rule. She thought boyfriends and guys in general would only serve as a distraction to her instead of an asset. Didn’t the driven girl always end up falling in love and accidentally getting pregnant, effectively derailing any hopes she had had for herself? While that might’ve been all well and good in the movies, Marnie wasn’t going to take her chances. A boyfriend could come after Marnie became a lawyer and started working at a practice (or ended up starting her own).
It didn’t mean she couldn’t appreciate the other gender, however. While she did try to avoid flirting as much as possible, she didn’t think a little here and there hurt anything. In fact, most of the time, it reminded Marnie exactly why she didn’t want a relationship yet. But Marnie had a good feeling about this guy. She was usually a pretty good judge of character – at least she liked to think so – and she got a really good vibe from this guy. Marnie didn’t think it’d be a bad thing if she bought a few less comic books than she usually did so she had to frequent here a little bit more often. The best that could happen was that she’d make a friend who had something in common with her, right? She hadn’t had nearly enough time to make friends in Manuka and the girl missed having people to talk to, even if she didn’t have the biggest social life.
The storeowner must’ve had the same thought in his mind, or he had really good timing. Either way, he seemed to pipe up right when Marnie was ready to say something to him. She glanced over at him and couldn’t help but match the smile he was giving her. “Actually, do you have any suggestions? It’s been awhile since I’ve bought any comics.” True enough, though she was pretty sure she’d be able to find something on her own. She was really just curious to see what caught his interests.

I'M JUST SAYING IT'S FINE BY ME IF YOU NEVER LEAVE Goose was used to people being surprised with how nice the shop actually was inside. For some reason most of them seemed to assume it was going to be dark and possibly smelly with nasty worn out carpet and a few beat up 70's style chairs scattered in the corners. He'd been to a few stores that actually matched that description perfectly so he supposed that was likely where they got their assumptions from, that and television shows. Which didn't exactly portray them as hip or socially acceptable places to be, unless you were a nerd of course. When it came to opening his own store here in the city he'd purposefully gutted and redecorated the interior specifically with that ideal in mind and did exactly the opposite.
The walls were painted an ivory tone to make it seem lighter which would have been boring excdept they were mostly covered by framed posters and pieces of art pertaining to all and any character or comic books series you coud think of. Some were vintage some were new and all were proudly displayed. There were a couple of plush ottoman style chairs and an array of bean bags for those who planned on staying a while and the floor was a dark cherry wood that shined nicely thanks to frequent buffer and waxings. Yep, his store was classy dammit. For as immature as he seemed to act sometimes the man actually did know how to adult and was pretty darn good at it if you could find a way to bring that side of him out.
Those who didn't actually know him were the ones who got to see that side of him more than anyone else really. Once you were what he would consider a friend or even an acquaintance really that all went out the window. The man just didn't have a filter and honestly didn't seem bothered by that fact either. Thankfully the people closest to him were not easily embarrassed or just liked him that much they didn't care even if his antics did create some crazy situations at times. It also helped he was just as good at getting them out of trouble with him as he was at getting them into it with him.
He actually hadn't gotten himself into any major scrapes or stirred things up in a few weeks actually which for him was quite a long while. Maybe the situation with Harper getting captured by the Plague and being there to help rescue her had sobered him up for a bit. Had him playing things low key for a while after the amount of excitement that had created and not in a good way mind you. There was really no way to describe the relief at finding her alive and then managing to get out alive themselves. A couple of moments had cut closer to that line of utter disaster than any of them wanted.
So maybe for now he was simply content to put away the new stock of comic books and steal glances at a pretty, no beautiful, girl. She seemed to know her way around even though he was quite certain he had never seen her here before. He would have remembered. What it did mean though was she had frequented other comic book stores in her lifetime and had a good idea of how most were laid out as far as the different types went. Better and better. That was the moment he realized he was staring and decided to continue acting like an adult for once and went about his business. The fact that his business happened to take him rather close to where she was standing was legit happen stance but he wasn't about to miss an opportunity either. His friendly question was met with a mega watt smile of her own and he was pretty sure he just heard the hallelujah chorus. But now she was talking and he had to force himself to catch up and listen to what she was asking him without looking too tongue tied. "Well if you're looking for something brand new I just got some new Avengers issues in, uh let's see, some X-Men stuff. If you're more of a DC fan there's some new Batman over there or maybe you're more of a Wonder Woman type?" He added the last bit with a playful little smile tugging at his lips, listing off a few of the most recent arrivals and also the most well known.
