nikki had been worried sick about tarquinn. it'd been, what, three weeks or so? the mermaid had lost track a while ago, but she figured it was around that time. yes, she - nikki'd decided that this was what she wanted. unfortunately, she hadn't had her boyfriend's help with deciding that, but it was decided. even if she wouldn't go through with all the surgeries and whatnot, nikki still was going to refer to herself as a girl. officially. although she really wished she could have quinn's input on this, the decision wasn't exactly spontaneous. nikki had been almost positive for most of her life, and her entire family had taken the news with some shock. not the bad kind, but the " now? i thought you'd already done that " way. yes, she'd basically always referred to herself as a girl, but . . . she felt better now, for some strange reason.
but then her thoughts strayed back to quinn and her heart sank. it wasn't just that they hadn't seen each other for a few weeks, but quinn hadn't even been replying to nikki's texts and calls. eventually, the mermaid stopped trying so often; she knew when someone didn't want to be bothered. she still sent an occasional text, the " good morning <3 " or " i hope you're doing good. " sometimes she'd get a reply, but it wasn't close to how they'd been before. this . . . this scared nikki. quinn was the first person outside of her family that she'd told about who she was, and the acceptance - after his initial reaction - had comforted the mermaid. but now he was withdrawing from her . . . nikki had a nagging voice in her head that said quinn was cheating on her, but he was a smart boy. he at least wouldn't be so obvious about it.
as the mermaid exited her apartment, she made herself a promise: she would find tarquin whether he wanted her to or not. she'd been to his place - obviously - but there was no luck there. she'd tried where he does his martial arts, but she never managed to find him or any of his friends there. she didn't know if he was telling them to stay away or if it was just terrible luck, but nikki was not amused by this. she decided to start her search at the coffee search, because really, she was going to need some caffeine to stay up after a late night the night before, trying to finish a painting. she took out her compact, reapplying her lipstick - pretty much the only make up she had on besides the mascara and minimal eyeliner - and . . . ran into someone. she mumbled an apology before noticing she knew this person - he was one of quinn's friends.
the two got talking, and nikki managed to get him to tell her where quinn was. his mother's house. okay, not the ideal place to cheat, so she figured she could shove that idea out of her head. with a thanks, nikki left to head to the address she'd gotten, not caring about the coffee anymore. the mermaid hailed a taxi and anxiously waited until the man pulled up in front of the mansion. oh, yeah, that was definitely an ellis house. she paid the taxi driver, collected her things, and headed towards the place. nikki made sure to stand up straight, shoulders back, for confidence. her heart racing, nikki rang the doorbell. a woman answered. " maybe i help you? " nikki gulped and nodded. " i'm a . . . a friend of tarquin's. is he here? " she had no idea if he'd told them about her or not, so it was better to play it on the safe side.
the woman motioned for her to step inside, so nikki did so. it had to be the right place, right? tarquin wasn't exactly a very common name, and if someone by that name didn't live here, she wouldn't have been let in. unless this was some creeper house, then she should probably be running like hell. " tarquin, it's for you. " the woman shouted, probably trying to get quinn's attention. nikki just kind of stood there, awkward, hoping this wouldn't turn out to be a disaster. well, if it did, she would have at least been able to see quinn one last time and say her good - byes.

His life was quite a mess by this point, and he did not know how to deal with it, or what or where to even begin to tell Nikki about all the things which had occured. So many things; one after another. It left him drained emotionally, unable to discuss his emotions over it at all. So he repressed, bottled it up, steered clear of his girlfriend. The mermaid would be able to pull everything out of him without trying, he was sure. And Quinn was not ready for that during those three or so weeks. He had been avoidant, but staying in his parent's -- now Amery was dead, just his mother's -- mansion had it's very real issues. Namely the ordeal with Giselle. That part alone had him in all sorts of conflicts, not to mention the fact that Nikki did not yet know about it. At least Quinn had been keeping a low profile with everyone -- which included his betrothed -- and did not have to face the reality of the situation he was now in.
There had been texts and calls ignored for everyone in general, but after feeling distress over the fact he could not talk to Nikki without spilling all, Quinn had shut his phone off completely. That way he did not have to see there were new messages and missed calls. He wouldn't know, and it gave him a level of peace in the turmoil of his life. He still loved the mermaid very much, and wanted to tell Nikki these things, but a part of him was nervous to do that. He wasn't exactly clean of doing wrong and terrible things, and he did not want to bring up past issues that had unfortunatly come to light for him and caused pain and confusion, nor did he want to explain his situation with Giselle. That part most of all bothered him, even if he did nothing physical, did not get even remotely attached to Giselle. He tolerated her, because he needed his mother and the clan to believe he was fully invested in the clan's plans for him and would never do anything against them. For now.
Quinn had been taking private martial arts classes while keeping under the radar, and minimal contact with any of his friends. Some of them knew where he was and that he was doing a loner thing at this point, and they gave him distance, for which he was grateful. It allowed him to have time to process things. And he had. Now he was merely waiting for the right time to deal. He did not know that it wouldn't be his call. At this point, Quinn did not know which direction his life was going to go. He had some ideas and ambitions, yet would he be shoved into something by the clan? It was very possible. He might also have to take Amery's place in the clan as well, though he couldn't be sure of something like that. Either way, Quinn did not want to be put in that position. He did not want to be one of those that made the choices for the others. He did not exactly believe in that himself, so why be a part of it? He did not intend to.
Practising a few martial arts moves in his room -- they never packed it up or anything, just in case he wanted to spend a few nights or whatnot -- he paused mid-move at the shout. It was the maid calling for him, which meant a visitor. His mother always called him Finn anyway, without fail. He ran a hand through his hair and sighed, grabbing a towel as he went downstairs to wipe off most of the sweat on his upper body. He wore nothing but sweatpants right now, so he was still a bit sweaty by the time he reached downstairs. Also, he had not told his family -- except Calan a bit back -- about Nikki. He had been planning a dinner to intruduce her to them, but things unravelled fast before it could be arranged. And then, he knew he could not let it happen, because of Giselle and the clan. He was not happy about it, of course, but such was life. This was what he had to go through for now. Hopefully not for too long, however. He'd find a way to fix it.
Putting the towel over his shoulders as he walked into the area, he halted at the sight of Nikki. After a moment he walked closer, still uneasy. "I guess uh.. I have some explaining to do." His eyes flicked down, then back up. "I missed you, but it was safer this way." He added quietly. He had the insane urge to kiss Nikki, but he bit his lower lip instead, figuring it would not be recieved very well after all the time apart and, well, avoiding the mermaid. Not that he would blame Nikki for reacting negatively for any of this. It would make sense. "Would you like me to explain in my room, or outside..?" The words were questioning, and he wanted the mermaid to feel more at ease when he told her what had been going on, and he wasn't sure if Nikki would want to see his room here, let alone talk there. Maybe out in the open would be better, though on retrospect, he realized he thought like this because of what he was going to tell the mermaid, not based on what Nikki might be thinking. What he had done would label him as dangerous, but his girlfriend's mind probably didn't even consider the truth.

nikki had heard a little about quinn's dad dying, but she never really got confirmation. she didn't really watch the news or read newspapers - she didn't need to know about all the bad things going on when she knew how bad the world was - but she'd overheard some people talking about it. nikki had no idea if those people were hunters or not, but they were most certainly talking about quinn's father being dead. she didn't approach them and also didn't ask tarquin about it (why would she? he wasn't talk to her then) so for all she knew, it was just a rumor. she kind of doubted it, though; it might have been one of the reasons her boyfriend wasn't talking to her.
waiting for tarquin to make his way over, nikki wondered if she should just turn around and leave. there had to be a reason why the male was ignoring her, why he hadn't been there when she was trying to decide if she would get the surgery to make her a physical woman, to be who she really was. whatever reason he had for not talking to her, nikki kind of wanted to know . . . but also didn't. their first break up had been hard enough, what if he wanted to break up again? for good this time? maybe avoiding nikki had been his way of dumping her this time . . . nikki didn't know if that was better or worse than when he left the beautiful cave after seeing her completely naked.
she made a move to turn and leave when tarquin showed. he paused when he saw her, she noticed, but she just smiled a little at him. nikki nodded a little bit. " um, some explaining would be a little nice. " she said with a small laugh. the woman that had answered the door had walked away by now, which kind of made nikki feel . . . odd. she really wanted to wrap her arms around quinn and kiss him, to lay down somewhere and just cuddle. no sex, just some good old - fashioned cuddling. talk about what they'd been up to since they last talked. while she would love for that to happen, she was still scared that maybe quinn had been wanting to break up. the way he was acting didn't help the mermaid's suspicion. " i missed you, too, " she said softly.
the mermaid bit her lip, thinking. outside meant fresh air, but they also would have to be careful of what they did or else they could be caught. and she'd never seen his room here . . . " y-your room? i mean, we can go outside if that's where you're more comfortable, but . . . yeah, " she said, shifting her weight slightly. nikki couldn't help but look at the sweat that was still drying on quinn's chest . . . he must have just been practicing or working out in some way. nikki wondered if she had interrupted him when he was busy, but deep inside, she didn't care. it was worth it to see him again. " lead the way? " she questioned, walking over to him. nikki wanted to hug him so badly, but she could wait until they were relocated. wherever they went, nikki would follow him.

There had not been a lot of progress on the case with the death of Amery, though they were pinning it on one of the hunters because of the bullet they dug out of the older firetamer. It was shot from a gun they found later that belonged to a hunter. Not that they suspected it was stolen from that hunter, of course. Hunters killed all the time, so why not pin it on one? And as it sounded from gossip, that hunter was more then glad to take the credit for killing one of the Ellis clan elders. Why wouldn't they be? It gave them street cred, right? But Quinn took all of this information in quietly, not minding that the hunter took credit for the kill -- the hunter would likely be targetted more by the clan anyway -- and it got Quinn off more too. But no one even gave that a thought, and why should they? Quinn was acting the role of perfectly supportive son.
As for it being a reason Quinn wasn't talking to Nikki? Yes, it sure was a reason for that. He couldn't lie to the mermaid about it, and he wasn't sure how to tell Nikki why he had done it, either. Yet he always knew he would have to eventually. More than anything, he wanted so badly to hold Nikki and remember that the mermaid loved him. Quinn just wasn't sure Nikki would after he explained all that had been going on. That had been a reason as to why he had waited all this time, prolonging the inevitable. He did not want to let Nikki go. He was so worried that the mermaid would leave him, though in the back of his mind he knew he wouldn't be able to blame her for it. It would make sense for most people to walk away, he supposed. But he was aligned on the 'dark side' as the clan was suppost to be. And Nikki knew that, right?
Though Quinn could not expect that to mean all that much to anyone in light of this. Of what he had done. It was the worst kind of crime to betray any of the clan and kill a family member. He was aware of that, but he felt it had been justified. He would not change his mind from that fact, no matter what. Yet he did hope that Nikki would not turn him in after he told the truth, but that was a risk he was willing to take. There could not be any more secrets between them for the relationship to work out. And he hoped it would, though he still felt nervous that after this it would only crash and burn. He did not think he would be able to handle that well, but he would respect Nikki's choice in the matter. But oh how he wished he could just tell the mermaid it all and be able to hold the mermaid close afterwards.
Listening to Nikki's responses, he dipped his head ever so slightly, knowing that these could be the last minutes he's get with the mermaid. And that upset him, but he would not allow it to show. Not yet. He did feel a smile forming at hearing Nikki missed him too, and when the words of his room being the mermaid's choice -- but Nikki wouldn't mind outside either if he wanted that -- he just watched his girlfriend, wanting to burn the image into his mind in case this all went. At the statement telling him to lead the way, he motioned with his head and started to the stairs again, going to his room. Once there, and Nikki was in, he shut the door and gazed at the mermaid before taking a deep breath. "There's been a lot of things going on. First, Roman's death and his funeral; that had been... really difficult for many reasons." Quinn paused with a frown.
He glanced away, then back at Nikki. "The contents of his will wasn't easy to digest either." He looked uneasy at this point, then went over to open a drawer up, shuffling some papers before bringing out one and handing it to Nikki, looking pensive. "This is Roman's will, at least the part that refers to me..." And he fell silent again, moving over to stand at the window and look out, giving Nikki some space to read the contents as he waited. He figured that the mermaid would understand why he felt messed up over what had been written in the document. It certainly changed nothing between the mermaid and himself on his part, but Quinn felt that Nikki needed to know. And this was only the beginning of things he had to tell the mermaid. And because of the situation, probably the less upsetting, too.

tarquin was acting strangely, but that wasn't really too much of a surprise to nikki. she figured that after he hadn't been talking to her, something had to be up, and seeing him act this way just confirmed her suspicions. she still had absolutely no idea what was wrong, but that was why she was here; to figure out what was wrong with her boyfriend and to help him through all of this. well, that was part of the reason that she had come over. she also wanted to talk about her new little revelation of herself - which really wasn't a revelation, but still - to make sure quinn wasn't freaked out by it. well, okay, he'd gotten over seeing her man parts, but she wanted to be sure, before she started on the hormones that were on hold at the pharmacy.
nikki didn't pressure quinn or demand that he tell her what was wrong before they went up to his room like she'd kind of wanted to. she wanted to know what was wrong, but didn't want to pressure him into spilling everything. she knew how it felt to have someone yell questions at you and demand answers; it'd happened with her first boyfriend when he found out about nikki. it'd been worse than with quinn - the guy's blow up - but the feelings hadn't been that strong with him. with tarquin, she felt something, so it hurt worse. as nikki followed tarquin up to the firetamer's room, she hoped that if they managed to overcome nikki and quinn's big secrets, they could overcome whatever quinn's current problem was. hopefully.
nikki didn't really know what she was expecting when they got to quinn's room, but what came out of the other's mouth wasn't exactly what he had been expecting. " what . . . ? oh, quinn, i- i'm so sorry. are you alright? " she wanted to go up to him, hug him real tight, but she was scared he didn't want her to. after all, they hadn't seen each other in a while; something might have changed that made him not want her touch. as a bit of a compromise, nikki walked up to quinn and comfortingly rubbed his arm. she knew what kind of relationship quinn and roman had, from when it was sexual to when it was hateful, so she had no idea what was going on in quinn's head about it. she stopped herself from asking; if he wanted to talk about it, he would.
the mermaid arched an eyebrow and tentatively took the paper from him, reading it in her head. " you became the one person i cherished the most . . . i don't think you really knew how much i loved you which was my fault, and i regretted it for the past years we've been apart . . . i bestow my journals to you . . . i present this ring to you that was and still is meant for you . . . " nikki set the paper down, not really knowing what to think. roman died loving tarquin, had left him a journal and a wedding ring. " i . . . i honestly don't know what to say, quinn, " she stammered, confused. she walked up and stood next to him, looking up at the firetamer. " how are you holding up, with all of this? " she inquired quietly, slowly maneuvering her hand to find quinn's, giving it a squeeze.

Even when he told Nikki what was going on, Quinn couldn't be sure it would stop much of how strangely he was acting. These sort of things went deep, and it couldn't be shaken just because he wished it so, or just because he had told someone. But it did help to tell, to let Nikki know what he had been dealing with. Or at least part of it. He would get to the rest as well, but first part was first. Tell the mermaid of the first death and how that had given more distress than Quinn had anticapated from it. He knew he'd be upset over Roman's death, no matter how he had felt about his brother. But the will had made all of that harder, more confusing. It had made it all hurt more to know that Roman hadn't really let go. It did not change anything, and wouldn't have if Roman had said anything while still alive. Well, maybe he wouldn't have disliked Roman so much, but that was all.
With Nikki's response at telling of Roman's death, he had glanced away, gave a short shake of his head. No, not okay, but he just needed to mourn a bit longer. Get it out of his system and move on from the hurt. With Nikki, that would be easier for him to do. To have her support, because he really did need it, though he didn't always want to admit it to anyone but the mermaid. He gave a small smile at the comforting rub to his arm, wanting to hold Nikki close, but deciding not to do any of that until everything was out in the open. Then he would wait and see if she stuck around, and if she made the first move when it came to touch. He couldn't stand the idea of going to hug her and being pushed away, so he wasn't going to try. It would be up to Nikki on that. Right now, he had to let her read the will and wait for her reaction to it.
More words from the mermaid and Quinn looked wary, unsure. With Nikki moving closer to stand next to him, then with her looking up at him and speaking again, he bit his lip and gave a slight shrug. "I don't really know how I feel about it. How should I? Glad that he still loved me? Appreciative that he let me free of something so twisted anyway?" He was confused and conflicted on how to take it, no use trying to say otherwise. He just didn't know. But the squeeze to his hand was nice, and he pressed gently back. But his hand went loose after that, because she might soon want to pull away and he wouldn't blame her for that. He took a breath; here goes. "Amery is dead too. For all the abuse and messed up shit he did to Roman, and the fact that Roman always asked me to do nothing... but then he died, so I killed Amery." And there it was, the first person to hear his confession of the murder.
There was just so much to say to Nikki, so much to tell. The last part wasn't any better, and all the stress added up, was making Quinn a nervous wreck. He had kept away from most because he couldn't afford to open up and deal with all this. Yet for Nikki he knew he must, and if anyone should know, it should be her. He was telling her one thing after another, and upon retrospect, maybe he should have told this Amery thing last, but it was too late now. It was said, and he could only hope that Nikki wasn't going to turn him in for it. The reasons had been good for what he'd done, and he hoped that Nikki knew him enough to understand that. Quinn wasn't the kind of person to just kill someone for something stupid. Give them a beating, sure. But he wouldn't take it this far unless it was really warranted.
