It had only been a handful of months since Ryden had been taken and tortured, but it seemed like years ago. While the thought and the guilt of everything being her fault still stuck at the back of Darby’s mind, it didn’t do much to hurt their relationship. In fact, the little firetamer thought her uncle’s plan had completely backfired and instead of Darby and Ryden losing each other for forever, they had grown even closer. Inseparable, almost. She was almost afraid of letting Ry out of her sight, simply because last time she had, something awful had happened to him. Besides, if Darbs had the choice, she wouldn’t ever leave his side. It was exactly where she wanted to be.
If anything good had come out of the whole thing, it was that Darby’s parents had been a little bit more relaxed about her spending time with Ryden. They hadn’t gotten rid of all of their rules – most notably, the staying overnight at Ry’s place rule – but they hadn’t given her too much grief over spending basically every waking moment with him. She thought they must’ve gotten over the whole “Ellises can only date firetamer” thing, seeing as how even their best efforts couldn’t keep Darby and Ry apart. It didn’t mean they were happy about it, of course, but they no longer openly rejected it. It certainly made it easier to be with Ryden, even if some of their rules were annoying.
But tonight, Darby planned on breaking one of their rules. While she wasn’t inherently a rebel and generally listened to what she was told, Darby had to get away with it this time. It was her and Ry’s six month anniversary and while she was sure that wasn’t a long time (especially to Ryden when he could live forever), this was her first relationship. Honestly, Darbs had thought she was never going to date anyone, especially someone as perfect as Ryden. So their six month was special to them so they had to celebrate it. Ry hadn’t told her what he was planning, but he had told her to bring a swimsuit, something nice to wear, and to be ready to have a great time. It had been Darby’s idea to tell her parents that she was staying at a friend’s house so she could spend the night with Ry. She hadn’t told him that yet, figuring it could be a surprise for later.
For now, Darby raced up the three flights of steps, her present for Ryden tucked under her arm. She really wasn’t sure what to get him. At all. She knew he wasn’t one to covet material items, so it crossed pretty much everything off her list. After a long thought process, she decided something personal would be a better gift for him. Even then though, Darby still wasn’t sure what to give him. The firetamer wasn’t artsy at all, not even in the least sense of the word. Anything she tried to make would turn out to look like a five year old’s art project. So that was out too. Finally, Darby decided on giving Ry book, a very stereotypical Darby Ellis gift.
Not just any book, though. It was Darby’s favorite book, The Catcher in the Rye. She had fallen in love with it when she first read it in 10th grade and it had remained Darby’s favorite all this time. The copy she had was dog-eared with her favorite quotes underlined, as well as post it notes in various places in the book that Darby had written thoughts on while reading. All in all, the copy appeared rather beat up, but it showed how well loved the book was and how often it had been read, considering there were so many different pen colors in the book. Right before wrapping the book, Darby had slipped her favorite picture of her and Ry between the cover and first page, just to make it even more personal. She was so worried he wasn’t going to like it, but hopefully if he didn’t, he wouldn’t say it out loud.
Once at the top of the steps, Darby waited a couple of moments before excitedly knocking on Ryden’s door. The wait between her knocking and him opening it had almost been unbearable. It had only been a handful of hours since she had seen Ryden last, but that was a couple hours too long in her opinion. Once Ryden actually opened the door, Darbs couldn’t stop the huge smile that spread across her face the moment she saw him. “Hey,” she greeted, even though she knew it sounded lame. The firetamer still felt like she was at a loss for words every time she saw him.

[style=width:430px; padding-top:15px; padding-bottom:15px; background-color:white; border:3px solid #00688B;] [style=padding-top:3px; padding-bottom:3px; width:400px; background-color:#00688B;][style=padding-top:20px; padding-bottom:20px; width:394px; background-color:#00688B;][style=color:white; font-family:yanone kaffeesatz; font-size:15; letter-spacing:6px; text-transform:uppercase;]you know i'm here to stay [/style][/style] Six months ago today he'd met Darby Ellis and since then it was as if Ryden's whole life had been turned upside down. And in the absolute best possible way. Who knew being chased by vampires could end up leading you to your soul mate? Though he hadn't said as much out loud and certainly not to Darby yet there was no doubt in the angel's mind she was it. The one person in the entire world who made you feel like you were home no matter where you happened to be in that moment. His entire view on life had shifted since the day he'd first met her, going from cynical and bleak to bright and happy. He couldn't remember a time when he'd smiled as often as he did now. And meant it at least. Just the thought of her and it was an instant day brightener.
Granted they'd had their share of trials, mainly in the form of her parents and their strict watch over where their daughter went and who she was with every day. Before he came along it seemed that job hadn't been overly hard seeing as she was not the sort of girl who went looking for trouble. Whether it was the fact he was very much not a fire tamer or his being a male in general that they weren't happy with the most he could never really tell but either way their reception of him had never been overly warm. Their opinion didn't mean all that much to him personally but he knew Darby wished they could get along better so he did his best to leave a good impression with any and all of her family members. So far her sisters didn't seem to mind him that much but they were fairly caught up in their own lives.
He'd realized though that it clearly didn't matter how good of an impression he left or tried to leave at least. They were clearly never going to accept him in Darby's life. A fact made quite obvious after they tried to have him removed from it for good by getting him kidnapped by The Plague. The three days of torture by whatever means were available had been bad but the worst part was not having been able to let Darby know he hadn't just up and left her. It seemed to be one of her worst fears, being abandoned, and he wanted her to know that she would never, ever have to worry about that happening. Seeing her come through the door of the warehouse that day had proven though that she must have known it and not only that but he realized there wasn't anything that either of them wouldn't do to keep each other safe.
Since then they'd grown even closer, literally spending every waking moment together. If it weren't for her parents not approving he would have asked her to move in with him that very day they had made it back to his apartment. He did have to admit they had loosened their grip on Darby a good bit which made things much easier than they had been with them sneaking around a bit before the incident with the hunters. Guilt perhaps at almost getting their daughter's boyfriend killed and her along with him? Who knew but Ryden wasn't about to question it too much. If it meant more time with Darby and less worry about her getting in trouble with her parents then he would take it and run with it whatever the motivation behind it.
For today at least it meant spending the entire day with her worry free on both their ends. He'd been planning this for a little while now and thankfully the weather was on his side for what he had in mind to start their day out. He hadn't told Darby any specifics except what she should wear and bring with her clothing wise and he had been able to hear the curiosity in her voice over the phone when he'd talked to her the night before. True to form though she hadn't pestered him to tell her, just sweetly accepted that she would have to wait and see which made it all the better. A quick glance at the clock showed she'd be there any minute and he finished getting dressed, pulling a simple white t-shirt over his head to go with the black board shorts he already had on. Both of them had talked about spending a day at the beach but so far hadn't managed to make it there yet. Today they were going to remedy that little fact.
The sound of her knocking against the door suddenly echoed through his apartment and a grin automatically spread across his face knowing she was here. He'd just seen her yesterday but it still felt like far too long ago. Crossing the room to pull open the door his smile widened at seeing the bright grin that light up her features. He could have stared at her smiling forever and been completely happy. "Hey to you too, cutie," He returned, pulling her into his arms for a quick bear hug and kiss in greeting. "You can leave your extra clothes here for now. We'll be back before we need them," That was all the hint he gave about what the rest of the evening would entail. Obviously the swimming suit gave away this first bit slightly but it was the latter half of the day that was going to be most special.
Once she had done just that he linked hands with her and led them out of the apartment and down the stairs to the parking lot where he opened the car door for her before going around and getting in the driver's side. A few minutes later they were heading out of the city and towards the beach, windows down and the radio playing in the background. Literally a perfect start to the day ahead. It didn't take very long to reach their destination and after parking relatively close to the actual beach itself, he put the car in park and grinned over at the girl next to him, winking playfully, "Ready to get wet?"

Even after six months of dating, Darby still had trouble believing that everything was real. What she and Ry had? It was something special, something that happened once in a lifetime. Maybe it was because Ryden was the firetamer’s first love, but Darby didn’t think that was entirely the case. She couldn’t picture herself happy with anyone else. Ryden was going to be the one she walked down the aisle towards (if they ever went that route) and the person she was going to grow old with (or at least, she’d grow old while Ry didn’t really change). Too premature to think with only six months of dating under their belt? Definitely. But Darby was convinced. Not having him in her life would kill her. She had already experienced it once and it had been the worst three days of her life. The girl couldn’t imagine living the rest of her life like that.
As much as Darby might’ve thought about things like that, every worry stopped the moment Ry wrapped his arms around her in a huge hug. She really was the luckiest girl in the world, seeing as how these hugs were basically reserved for her. While the hug itself was rather quick, Darby practically melted into it instantly. She felt like she fit there perfectly, so naturally it didn’t take her too long to settle in. But of course they couldn’t stand like that all day, as much as the firetamer wouldn’t have minded it. They had places to go, things to do, and if Darby was going to be quite honest, she couldn’t wait to find out what they were. Whatever Ry had planned would be perfect and the sooner they got on their way, the better. “I’ll be right back,” Darby said, quickly pecking Ryden on the cheek before disentangling herself from his arms and going back to his room.
The firetamer dug her dress and heels out of her bag, laying the dress across the bed in hopes of preventing it from getting more wrinkled. She placed her present for Ry on top of the dress, thinking it would probably be safer here than at the beach. Water and books didn’t always tend to mix so there was no need to tempt fate by bringing it. She was still a little afraid that it was a lame present, but now was a little too late to worry about it. With that all done, Darby slung her backpack onto her back and walked back out to meet Ryden, entwining her fingers with his when he offered his hand.
The ride to the beach couldn’t have been better. It was basically like something out of a movie. Perfect weather, perfect music, and the perfect kind of comfortable silence. Normally, Darby felt awkward when things were quiet. She felt like she had to say something to break the silence, but she hated doing that too because it usually just turned into useless babble. Not with Ryden though. There was something about him that just made any quietness between them feel natural. They weren’t the kind of couple that had to be constantly chattering at one another. Just being in each other’s company was usually enough.
Getting to the beach didn’t take too long and before Darby knew it, their perfect car ride was over. It wasn’t necessarily a bad thing though, because it meant they were at the beach. “Definitely,” Darby agreed, smiling back at Ry before grabbing her backpack and getting out of the car. She went around to the other side of the car to link her hand with Ryden’s yet again and walked with him towards the beach. It was crowded, considering how wonderful the weather was, so it took a little while to find a spot. Eventually though, the two had found a relatively large area of empty sand.
True to Darby’s nature, she had over packed for this beach adventure, grabbing everything she could possibly need. The firetamer pulled an overly large blanket out of her bag and laid it across the sand and then grabbed sunscreen, her towel, and a couple of water bottles out as well, throwing everything on the blanket. With that all finished, all Darby had to do was undress so she was in her bikini. The thing was though, the girl was a bit nervous about that. See, if you knew her, you’d know Darby was one to always dress on the more conservative side. She wasn’t confident enough to show off too much of her body.
The same thought had always gone into Darby’s swimsuits. She pretty much stuck to one piece swimsuits and tankinis, things that covered as much skin as they could while still being swimsuits. But on Darby’s last shopping trip with her sister, Calla had convinced her to be a little bit more daring and buy a bikini. In theory, it had seemed like a good idea, but Darby hadn’t been able to convince herself to wear it up until this point. Much like when she bought it, it had seemed like a good idea at the time, but now she was nervous about it. Too late though. She wasn’t going to sit on the blanket the entire time they were there fully clothed and ruin their day. Keeping her eyes directed towards the blanket, Darby slipped off her shorts and unbuttoned her shirt, throwing both into the bag. She felt even more ridiculous now, but tried not to think about it. Instead, she picked up the sun screen and offered it to Ryden. “Help me?,” she asked, fully aware it was some sort of cliché to ask your boyfriend to help with sunscreen, but Darby really needed it. The girl never tanned. She only got sunburn.

Darby had already informed him she would bring sunscreen and a blanket for them to sit on so that wasn't needed. What was needed though was their lunch which he had taken care of that morning and was all ready and packed in a small cooler. By that point Darby had come back out and he picked up the cooler with one hand and grabbed his beach towel with the other where it was folded and waiting on the arm of the couch. All set to go it didn't take more than a minute to get things settled in the backseat of the car and before long they were on their way to the beach.
As much as he was looking forwards to their little excursion to the water the angel couldn't help but think about the evening to come. The look on her face when he gave her the gift he'd picked out for her weeks ago. There was of course a tiny part of him that hoped she would like it but he knew her well enough by now to know she would. He just hoped she didn't think it was too much. He'd been careful when he'd been selecting it that it wasn't something over the top for the occasion yet still showed how much she meant to him. There was also the enjoyment of getting dressed up for the occasion. Normally they kept to simple, low-key activities and this was actually the first time she would have even seen him in anything but blue jeans or any other casual attire.
Not wanting to diminish any of the fun they were going to have here and now though Ry pushed all that anticipation to the back of his mind. The drive over wasn't a long one and he too enjoyed the comfortable silence sprinkled with a few remarks here or there between them. Everything with Darby was just easy and he loved that. He wasn't exactly a chatter box sort of person and he appreciated that she didn't try to force him to be either. Even though they had found a fairly close spot the parking lot was pretty full thanks to the warm weather. It didn't take long for Ryden to grab the cooler and toss his towel over one shoulder before Darby joined him, linking her fingers through his own as they headed towards the beach itself.
The amount of cars definitely translated into plenty of people and at first it seemed like there was hardly any place left. But after a tiny bit of searching the couple managed to find a nice enough spot and Darby proceeded to dig out a blanket, water bottles, the sunscreen and her beach towel. Putting the cooler and his towel down as well he was left with simply pulling off his t-shirt since he already had board shorts on in place of regular ones. Darby was in the process of getting down to her swim suit as well and once she had it was all he could do not to stare too much. Her outfits were almost always more on the modest side, a fact he was perfectly fine with and he always thought she looked wonderful no matter what she was wearing. So this was the first time he'd seen her in anything as revealing as a bikini and it was really hard not to stare. She was a gorgeous girl even if she was a bit hesitant to believe that fact herself.
Taking the sunscreen she was now holding out to him, he gave a half little grin. "Sure, babe," Popping open the lid he squirted some into the palms of his hands and began to rub it onto her skin, starting near her neck and shoulders and eventually moving down her back until it was completely covered anywhere she couldn't quite reach. She happened to have ridiculously soft skin, a fact he already knew but was now reminded of once again. Reaching around he dabbed an extra little dollop on her nose, grinning teasingly. "There, all done," Holding the tube back out to her, he added lightly, "Put some on my back too?" He tanned easily enough but he still had no desire to leave looking like a lobster.
