I - 春季の唄

"what is that?"
a short, stubby finger rose to point up at the night sky, which was littered with twinkling, distant stars. wide, black eyes fixed on them with wonder, and the child's other arm rose, fingers spreaded out as though she could grasp those balls of light. yet, the girl wasn't pointing at the sea of glowing carpets, but rather, at the single star that was separated from the rest by a long way away. papa takeda, who was sitting next to her, followed his daughter's finger and gaze, and smiled.
"that's you."
"ehhhhh? that's a star?" the girl glanced down at herself, as though she was about to burst into light any moment. "i'm a star?"
her father pulled down one of her raised arms, and turned it, so that her palm was facing up. using a finger, he traced the child's name on her palm, '星'. "that's right."
"you're confusing her!" chastised another voice, and mama takeda hopped up onto the roof, landing gracefully on her feet. "you're our star, hoshi." she added, sitting down next to her husband to plant a kiss on hoshi's temple. "our star."
"papa says i'm that star." said hoshi, pointing once again to the lone star. "why am i alone?"
"it's what makes you special." replied her father. "you will shine brighter than the rest, and though you may be lost and alone, you will eventually find your own path to walk, and perhaps one day, be able to join that huge throng." he pointed to the sea of stars above him.
"not all those who wander are lost." her mother added. "remember that, love."
II - 夏の踊り
"but i was afraid when i forgot the wind."
"they don't love you."
the voices came after her sixteenth birthday, spitting poison in her ear and threatening to corrupt her view on the world. unknown to her, she had inherited her family's paranoid schizophrenia, and it began affecting her life. from the hallucinations and delusions, she lost her grip on the world, viewing it in a twisted, morbid reality. her social life began taking a downward spiral, and soon enough, no one wanted anything to do with her. it didn't help that she was accusing people that they were out to get her, and attacking those that so much as shoot her a look. her parents were in despair, and had no idea what to do with her. you didn't have hospitals in hokkaido back then. it didn't help that she was a hybrid, possessing strength that was obviously out of the ordinary, and becoming a destructive force to others, and most of all, herself.
her paranoia grew to such a point that she was soon turning against her own parents as well, thinking that she was brought into this world so that they could hurt her. in a moment of 'self-defense', she killed them, when their crime was naught to seek help for her. it was only too simple for hoshi to come to the conclusion to eliminate any sort of threat to her. her mother's life was easy to take first, and by a stroke of twisted luck, she managed to stab her father's heart.
after she realized what she had done, the voices congratulating her at the same time, she ran, screaming, from the little house she used to call home.
III - 秋の一笑
"dreaming of a midday shadow."
hoshi ran for days, nonstop, through rain or shine, screaming her voice became hoarse and her tears becoming frozen from the chilly weather. her hair was soon rimy from snow and frost, but the hybrid continued to run nonetheless, wanting to escape the pain. she wanted nothing more than to curl up in the snow and let the blizzards take her, but that wasn't how immortals were supposed to go, unfortunately.
hoshi soon decide to settle herself in a village, and the first thing she did was to seclude herself in the first abandoned house she saw. howls were soon haunting the house every night, the young hybrid grieving relentlessly in the form of a shiba inu dog. when the villagers went to investigate, they never returned, as she slaughtered anyone who entered the hid their bodies. the house soon became known as a haunted spot where a restless monstrous dog plucked unsuspecting victims, when it was just a girl with a mind of unrest stalking its grounds in the form of a shiba inu. tales soon spread around edo, and the villagers, deciding to try pacifying the dog, placed offerings in front of the house and prayed that she didn't harm them.
inubakemon soon became inubashiri, and it was the name hoshi went by over the next few years. despite her plagued mind, she soon had a change of heart from the offerings, and decided that she could make the attempt to protect the village instead, despite her paranoid thoughts, just as long as they didn't disturb her. every night, when the village slept, she protected them from the wild beasts that threatened to eradicate them. the offerings continued over the next hundred years, hoshi then hailed as a goddess and the abandoned house renovated to becoming a shrine for her.
IV - 冬の物覚え
"let us fall down into the light."
when people left the village, the tradition of offering things at the shrine and to her was soon diminished as well. hoshi spent the next hundred years in loneliness, and continued to stay at the old shrine until present day. when the bulldozers appeared to knock the temple down to build a hotel, her home was lost to its violent maws. hoshi watched as they knocked down statues they built in honor of her, and the once glorious shrine crumbling to the ground. powerless to stop them, the little hybrid left the second place she called home with a broken heart.
after a long ship ride to america, she found herself in the city of manuka. it had been easy to for her to pick an alliance, to continue protecting the humans. though she still has voices telling her no, and the distrust that everyone was out to get her, yet, she believes that if she does enough good, she'll finally be allowed to find peace.
she was indeed still wandering, but at least she wasn't lost anymore.
