She dressed herself in a dark brown floral dress. She thought that since it was so warm outside the short dress would be cool enogh to not be uncomfortable and with the ¾ sleeves, if there was a slight breeze her arms would be covered. Emeri looked at herself in the mirror and sighed. Her face was naked of any makeup and her hair was in every direction possible. Today she had finally gotten a day off and it was nearing 4:30, which was when Decklyn was supposed to be here. Last night they had talked over instant messaging and decided to go out to dinner after he got off work, which was hopefully 10 minutes ago, though she doubted he was actually let off at exactly 4. When working in the medical field, you had to expect at least a 30-minute delay at least at the end of your shift. Something always came up and you were stuck working longer than expected and it was always frustrating when you were dead tired and wanted to get the hell out of there.
Emeri thought of how much time she’d have before he knocked on her door. She estimated she’d have enough time to do her hair and put on a little bit of makeup before they left, so she did just that. While doing so she thought of where they should go. Emeri didn’t really know a lot of places around Manuka because she didn’t really go out very often. In fact she rarely went out. She didn’t have many friends and she worked all the time. By the time she got home from work, she had just enough time to sleep before she had to go back to work or was too tired to go out and do anything. Luckily though she had tonight, tomorrow, and the following day off. It was rare that she ever get three days off in a row and she was grateful for the chance to finally relax and do much of nothing.
She was also glad for the chance to go out to dinner with Decklyn. When he asked her if she wanted to dress up for the occasion she had thought it was a date, but that was probably just in her mind and it was nothing more than two friends having dinner together. Emeri liked Decklyn, but she was afraid still of getting too close to him for fear of being let down. She knew he had a heart of gold, but she knew that there was always the chance that he hurt her somehow. He wouldn’t do it on purpose, but the more she thought about it the higher she tried to make those walls around her. But he somehow managed to break them down one brick at a time.
It was probably the fact that he made her smile even when she didn’t want to and made her blush when he called her darlin’. He had somehow gotten her interested in him just by being himself and it scared her a little because that was so rare of an occasion. It had happened once before with Chandler, but they hadn’t spoken in ages. She didn’t really know why, but she really did miss that man. He was one of the only people that she was able to be herself with. Thinking of him now made her want to call him up and see how he was doing, but that’d take time she didn’t have… Other than Chandler, no one really caught her attention enough to make her actually want to take time to get to know them. She supposed that when someone came into her life and was good enough to want to stick around, they would. Maybe that person was Decklyn, she didn’t know, but he was the only one so far who she could actually see herself having a good friendship with. Perhaps tonight she would finally take down her walls completely and let herself feel something for Decklyn.
Before she was able to think too much about that, there was a knock on her door. She touched up her eyeliner and blinked at her reflection, satisfied with the results. She opened the door and saw Decklyn standing on the other side. Her heart jumped a little in her chest and she grinned nervously. “Hey,” she said and opened the door wider motioning for him to come in. “I just have to put shoes on and I’ll be ready,” she declared and went into her bedroom to fetch some shoes. She chose brown sandals that matched almost perfectly and walked back into the living room where Decklyn stood. She bit the inside of her cheek and grabbed her bag. They walked out of her house and started towards town. “So how was your day?” she asked, trying to start conversation.

Or at least a specific ending time to them seeing as you almost never left when you were scheduled to leave. Might as well have just said come in at eight and work until you find a moment to run away. For his part working late or pulling a double shift didn't much bother him mostly because he didn't have that busy of a life where it interfered with anything. Granted there was that nasty little business of being something of a hit man to worry about but he'd been avoiding that as much as possible lately. Still he knew it would catch up to him sooner or later, sooner being most likely. It wasn't something he honestly wanted to contemplate much. Had it not been for the fear of his sister and nephew's safety he would have got out a long time ago or rather never got back into it after becoming an paramedic.
For the time being though he had nothing to worry about but getting through today and out of the hospital on time for once. For the first time in what seemed like a very long time he actually did have plans. It had been something of a spur of the moment thing, this dinner date he and Emeri had agreed upon the night before. Whether or not it was an actual 'date' date Decklyn wasn't quite sure but he wasn't going to worry himself too much on that matter. Just the fact they were going out at all even if it was just as friends was a step in their relationship. Ever since that afternoon at the zoo he'd made sure to find ways to talk to her more and she had been more open towards him now than she'd ever been before. He could say he definitely considered her a friend and hopefully she considered him one as well.
There was of course plenty of chatter among the nurses concerning he and Emeri most of which he ignored even if some of it had him more than a little irritated mainly due to how it portrayed Emeri. Getting up in their face about it wasn't going to change it though and would likely only make things worse. Still if anyone ever had the guts to say some of it to his face he'd let them know exactly what he thought about it and probably them too along with it. His fellow paramedics knew better than to say anything too bold and aside from a bit of good natured ribbing it wasn't really a big deal among them. He and his partner had started out their day with a call right off the bat and it hadn't really stopped since then. Thankfully their last run of the day had ended with them back at the hospital at ten minutes to four and seeing a window of opportunity, Decklyn had left while he had the chance.
It only took him five minutes to get back to his apartment from the hospital and it was just after four when he was getting into the shower. A master at the five minute shower he was soon out and getting dressed, choosing a pair of dark denim jeans and a white button up dress shirt. Rolling the sleeves up partway and leaving the top two buttons undone kept it from looking too dressed up for the evening. What they were going to do he still wasn't quite sure, planning on winging it just like he'd suggested last night over the instant messenger. He liked to consider it something of an adventure and honestly there wasn't anyone else he would have wanted to share one with than Miss Emeri Donahue.
In the course of the little five minute conversations they managed to squeak out while at the hospital they'd discovered they didn't really live all that far away from each other. And seeing as it was a gorgeous day out Decklyn decided to walk to her house instead of driving since he had time to spare. Before too much time had passed he found himself standing in front of her door, knocking lightly a couple of times to announce his arrival. It opened a few moments later to reveal Emeri on the other side, looking surprisingly different outside of her normal scrubs. She grinned and welcomed him inside, informing him that she only needed to put on her shoes and she would be right back. Acknowledging the words with a smile, Decklyn waiting patiently, glancing around at the nicely kept little place. True to her word she was back in a minute and they were soon headed out the door and down the sidewalk.
Matching his stride to hers, he offered her his arm as she asked him about his day. "Busy but not too awful case wise. House calls mostly so it went pretty quick,"[ He knew she'd understand what he meant by the house calls making the day easier to handle. It was the auto accidents or the calls involving children that were the worst and he dreaded them the most. Glancing down at her, he took in the pretty brown dress she was wearing. "The non-uniform look suits you by the way," This was only the second time he'd seen her outside of the hospital scrubs she wore on the job and the first time at the zoo clothes hadn't really been the first thing on either of their minds he imagined. "Not gonna lie I'm kinda jealous over you scoring three whole days off," He added a moment after, a playful smile pulling at his lips. Lord knew how rare it was and he was happy she had been given them simply because he felt she deserved the small break.

Emeri didn’t know why Decklyn was special. He was just like any other guy she knew around the hospital… except he somehow wasn’t. Emeri had tried her best to keep her walls up so that she wouldn’t have any kind of feelings for him, but he had this way about him that made her actually want to get to know him more. He hadn’t pushed her to tell him anything or pried her for information on her life. He sort of just accepted her for who she was and let her open up to him in her own way. Emeri hadn’t met very many people like Decklyn. She knew that she might be taking things slowly with him, but it was the only thing she knew how to do. Emeri, since she was just a kid, had built up these walls around her so she wouldn’t get hurt. She had not yet explained to Decklyn why it was that she had originally built those walls, but she was planning on telling him soon because she thought he deserved to know since he was being so patient. Emeri had only explained her past to one other person in Manuka and that was Chandler. She’d always felt safe around him; like he’d always be there for her. And he was. She had a feeling that Decklyn might be another person in Manuka that would also be there for her.
But she had to remind herself to not count on people. If she did that, she’d be let down. Emeri was a very independent person. She hated asking for help and she never expected more from people than she knew they could handle. Because she was still getting to know Decklyn she didn’t know that he could handle her baggage and that was sort of scary. But she was glad for tonight because she would be able to better understand him with the more time they spent together. She just had to be careful of opening up too much to him with the more time they spent together. Emeri knew that it was a weird, twisted way to look at any situation, but there was no other option for her.
Emeri took a hold of Decklyn’s arm that was offered to her and walked with him with a small smile on her face as he told her about his day. She admired him for his punctuality after a shift. She had kind of expected him to be at least fifteen minutes or so late because knowing his work, he never got off on time. But here he was, even a few minutes early ready to go out with her. The thought of this being a date made her heart skip a little. Even though it was dinner and they were kind of dressed up, she didn’t think this was a date. It had been years since she last went on a date. She didn’t know what to do on dates. So Emeri decided this was dinner out with a friend.
Her thoughts all but stopped right then and there when Decklyn complimented her attire. Her face suddenly felt warm and she looked at the cement sidewalk under her shoes. “Thanks,” she said. “You look nice, too.” [/b] Emeri inwardly cursed herself for being terrible at giving compliments to people. She was so used to not talking to people that she had never had practice telling people that they had good qualities and taste in clothing. Emeri had never had—or really wanted—the chance to compliment people. She was also not very good at receiving them either. With Decklyn it was different because she knew he meant what he said. But when other people tried to say something good about her she felt it was always to get something in return. A few nurses had tried to compliment her on her work ethic (before of course talking badly about her behind her back) and she had noticed they only ever said it to her face. If they really thought so highly of her they wouldn’t call her a bitch to other nurses. But there was nothing she could do about them personally. She just had to carry on about her day and not care about what they said because they were so low on things to worry about that they didn’t even register as being remotely important to her. “Yeah, well it wasn’t my idea. But I’m glad I have them off because I haven’t been this tired in a long time. Not that I’m tired at this moment, but you know what I mean.” Emeri felt flustered. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. She couldn’t help but feel like this though when Decklyn kept looking at her with that smile plastered on his face. They walked towards where tons of local restaurants were located. She didn’t know what she was in the mood for so she thought she’d just let Decklyn pick. “What’re you in the mood for?” she asked and finally looked up at him, meeting his eyes. She hadn’t realized before how pretty his eyes were, but they were completely mesmerizing her right now. She couldn’t get herself to look away until she finally realized what she was doing and then she looked around at a few of the restaurants lining the street. Or at least that's what his father had told him when he'd walked out on the 'family business'. "You know what you're problem is, Decklyn, you care too much. You don't know how to keep your heart out of things and that's what gets you in trouble," He had never been able to understand what exactly was so bad about that fact though. It was what made him so good at his job as a paramedic, what made him a good uncle to his nephew and a brother to his sister. A good friend to anyone who let him in their life. As much as he had tried to follow the heritage of his father and grandfather and great-great grandfather there was just something in him that was different from them and he just could not.
He knew his father had thought of it as a weakness, that inability to not care, but Decklyn liked to think otherwise. Or at least he tried to because when it came down to it the fact that his father had been disappointed always stung. Still did really. It made the fact that he was back in the whole assassin for hire mode now that the man was dead a bit more ironic really. Not that he was actively looking for jobs but if he was asked by certain people he had no choice but to carry it out at least if he wanted his sister and nephew to stay safe. They hadn't contacted him for a while now and a part of him almost hoped they no longer needed him but he knew better than to let himself believe that.
For now though he was going to enjoy tonight and pretend he was just like any other normal guy going out with a pretty girl for a hopefully fun evening together. He wasn't quite sure whether or not it was an official 'date' or not but he wasn't too concerned about those types of labels. What mattered was them spending time together that didn't involve a third part bleeding out on gurney. He enjoyed the times he got to work with Emeri and he liked to think they made a pretty good team but still it was nice to be away from the hospital setting for once. His smile grew a tiny bit wider as she looked towards the ground at his remark about her dress. She was even more adorable when she got flustered. It wasn't a reaction he was used to seeing from her considering normally she was very confident and take charge in most situations.
"Thanks, figured this was an upgrade from that spiffy navy uniform I'm in every day," He replied with a bit of a playful tone to his voice. Really the clothes he was required to wear on the job weren't all that bad just very formal looking what with all the patches and logo's on them stating he was a paramedic. For once it was nice to sort of be incognito so to speak. He chuckled a little at her response concerning the three precious days off, wondering not for the first time how anyone could not like this woman. Most just didn't bother to take the time it would seem which was really their loss. "I think you deserve a good week off with all the work you actually do there. If you ask me they take advantage of you and your ridiculous amount of talent," He wasn't just saying that either. Compared to a lot of the nurses and interns there she was levels above them in terms of skill and knowledge.
It hadn't taken them long to reach the section of the city where more restaurants could be found than anything else which was perfectly suited for their plans. Glancing at them absently he was unaware of how closely she was observing the color of his eyes just then and met her gaze with a raise of an eyebrow. "Hmm, I think this is where eenie, meenie, miney moe comes into play," Referencing their conversation from the night before he leaned in a little closer to her level of height, pointing out three different places. "There, there and there. Those look like good choices to pick from?" He wanted to make sure she actually liked all three seeing as it could be any one of them that was selected in the end.
