you'll never learn to fly now

He did, and they were tight, as families should be. Yes, they were unconventional, and the main reason that they became a family was less than holy, but he had grown up with these people. Cassie, Cooper and David - and Ashton. They were all so different as individuals, it was insane how much they had one another's backs. Ashton knew that he would die for them in a heartbeat, if he had to. But sometimes, sometimes it was hard to trust them about his feelings. They were all hunters, acclaimed under Thomas's care and they could not disappoint their father figure, hell, they owed him their lives. They owed him everything, and Ashton would listen to his mother and do as he says. But just because he was a hunter, didn't mean that he wasn't a teenager. And he liked material things, he liked to learn, he liked books and video games.
Which was where he was now, waiting for David to come to have their session on the xbox. It was actually kind of funny, how they'd spend time playing video games, everything seemed to easy, until time for training came and they would train with one another. Because to be a hunter, you could not be distracted, you had to know how to fight back to those who were immortal and used their strength on you. That word; 'immortal' always made Ash snort, if only because of the fact that they weren't. That hunters and other people had the means to kill those who can live until the world ends. Ashton had always believed that that would be a sad existence, because who would want to outlive their families? Watch them die? From old age or disease. No, Ash would not wish that on anyone, but some people actively chose it. He had little respect for them.
As he set up the game, his mind was on his own task. He wasn't sure that he wanted to be a hunter, he had never had the choice. The violet eyes of the witch child still haunted him in his dreams. The kid had looked no older than eight, and Ashton didn't want to think about the fact that he had lost his life as his hands. But it seemed like even though he was afraid to voice his doubts, that at least Thomas noticed. Ashton knew this because of the new task he was presented that no one else in the group had been. He figured that Cooper was bummed that it wasn't him who got the challenge, but if Ash could, he would easily hand it over. Because befriending Elliot Lan to find out information was really, really hard and exhausting work. Yes, he had made some progress, they had had lunch and all, but he was frustrated that he didn't find out more. He wanted this to be over with. But Elliot was a bad man, and he owned a lot of things that Thomas needed the information for, which mean that Ash needed to find that all out before killing the guy.
The boy moved back to sit on the couch, the controller next to him as he waited for David to be done with whatever he was doing. He crossed his legs Indian style, before picking up a book that was on the bedside table next to him. You could call Ashton geeky, because he was. He loved books, comic books, old movies, everything that he saw on the TV that the modern day teenagers didn't appreciate. He had a love for it, and he wasn't ashamed to admit that. Which was why as his blue eyes scanned the words on the pages, the quiet music of the game playing in the background, he was so deeply sucked into the world of this book, that he didn't even hear David finally come in. He wasn't even sure how long it took for the other boy to finally get his butt there either. It was so easy to get lost.
