seasons change but you remain the same a steady heart, a sun to rain
Manuka was beautiful.
It had only been a few weeks since he made the trip all the way from Boston to Manuka, but he had to admit, as much as he loved Massachusetts, Maine was lovely. He wondered why his family had not chose moving here instead, because as far as Bear was concerned, he wouldn't have minded growing up in such a beautiful city. As he walked down the streets with his hands in his pockets and enjoying the accompanying spring breeze at the same time, Benjamin felt a strange inner peace he had not felt in a long, long time ever since his childhood, when everything had all been bliss and rainbows. He would give anything to be able to return to that innocence, when it wasn't stained by blood and betrayal, and most of all, guilt. Guilt that his brother's blood was on his hands, and his father's attempt on Sawyer's life, almost taking his younger son with him. He had carried the grief and guilt of it for many months before that fateful night when he heard that his brother was alive and still kicking in the city of Manuka, Maine. Now, all he had to do was find him. They would be together again, just like old times, only without their family in the background this time. And not to mention the dark warning that Bear now carried with him for Sawyer, that their father and sister were coming after him.
Hours passed from fruitless searching. It seemed that no one had heard of Sawyer, or at the very least, seen him recently. It did not help that most his contacts were back in Boston, and he had no eyes that would aid him in the city of Manuka. Running his hands through his curly hair, Bear groaned. He was completely and utterly alone in this. He was unable to call upon his father and sister for help because they were traitors, and he did not dare contact his mother. He had no one to call a friend for the time being because he had been so busy looking for Sawyer, and of course, most of them were back in Boston as well. Resisting the urge to squee (yes, squee) in frustration and start rolling around like how bears did to relieve stress (or rather he did, no judging) Benjamin held his tongue and plodded on. He was almost tempted to shift as well and start trundling around the city in his animal form, terrorizing every shop and house he came across until he came across Sawyer. Hunters could come after his arse for all he cared, but he would die trying to find his brother. Giving up was not an option, he had not grieved and made the long trip all the way here for nothing. Bear wouldn't allow it.
The distant sound of dogs barking alerted the shifter. Eyebrows rising, he cocked his head in the direction where the animals' voice had come from and sniffed. The smell of a myriad variety of animals drifted into his nostrils. There was a pound nearby. Figuring that it would be perfect for him to kill time and figure out his next step, the boy tottered in the direction of the pound, eventually reaching it and opening its doors. Curiously, Benjamin glanced around the pound, poking his face towards its cages and even reaching in a hand to pet a dog. Looking around, he saw that volunteers of the pound were now busy cleaning out the cages of the animals, and making up his mind, he decided that he was going to do the same. All he had to do was find the owner-
And then Benjamin saw him.
He looked a little pale, and disshelved and sweaty from dealing with all the animals, but he was there, right in the flesh. The older male still had the same, trademark mop of curly hair, and Bear thought that he looked a bit older than usual. And on a random note, which had nothing do with the brother he knew altogether in the years he grew up along with, Sawyer was cleaning out cat poop, scooping it out like it was no big deal. It was a bit of a bizarre sight for Benjamin, but the joy he felt upon seeing his face overrided everything else.
"SAWYER!" he shouted joyously, bounding over and throwing his arms around him, impervious to the stares that he was now receiving. Tears filled up his eyes as he hugged him, but Bear refused to allow them to fall, he was going to be man about this. "I thought I lost you." he cried, his voice on the edge of sobbing. "I thought I...dad said..." He couldn't go on, feeling overwhelmed by so many emotions. Sawyer was alive. He was alive.

Not only working and living pay check to pay check but volunteering to clean out animal cages with his free time. Not that he had hated animals before (although he had no idea if he had or not presently) but pets were never something his family had ever really been big on, mostly their dad's decision. They were already able to shift into creatures themselves so why bother with owning a dog or cat? Some shifters actually tended to ward animals off even in their human form simply because the animals could catch that something was off about this human. Thankfully Sawyer seemed to be having the opposite effect though and so far every cat, dog, rabbit and other furry critter he'd come in contact with enjoyed his presence.
Kinsley's dog and cat in particular were the ones he'd been most worried about seeing as he would have hated for either of them to be upset with him living there. That was the last thing he wanted in any way, shape or form to happen. For her life to get messed up because of him. It already had to be slightly challenging getting used to having another person around after all even if he didn't cause much of a disturbance. Thankfully they both seemed to mesh well as far as their personal styles and ways of living went. He was neat and organized and so was she, but neither were perfectionists. Cups were occasionally left on the coffee table to be found the next morning and mail was stacked in a pile on the kitchen counter. But both stepped in to take care of either problem or anything else like it and their squabbles were few and far between when it came to such things.
This new life with Kinsley so far was actually going much better than Sawyer had ever imagined it might. The girl herself was really playing a large part in that though, she was so sweet and caring and simply made his days brighter. A couple of the older women who worked at the veterinarian clinic had already hinted at there possibly being something more there between them after Kinsley had brought him lunch one day, knowing smiles on their faces. It was an assumption Sawyer had quickly denied, though more for her sake than because it was that undesirable. Heck, he'd be more than happy to call a girl like Kinsley his significant other. What man wouldn't? A stupid one that was what. That wasn't what they were though and Sawyer was perfectly fine with that, or at least most of the time. There were moments when the thought of there being something more flashed through his mind. Like when he'd come out of the shower in nothing but a towel and she'd been heading in to take one with a only a towel around her as well and they had slammed right into each other.
Suffice it to say the encounter, though it had left both red faced and stammering for a few moments before they untangled themselves, had been enough to make him wonder, though he wasn't planning on acting on it of course. She had a boyfriend, after all, Remy McElhaney, and he had actually gone on a couple of dates with one of the girls from the vet's office as well. Not that they were a couple or anything but it was enough to discourage those other thoughts. Or should have been at least. She was still his best friend though and honestly he enjoyed spending time with her above anyone else. And Kinsley seemed to enjoy his company equally as well so in the end it all worked out smoothly enough. She was actually coming in to pick him up after his shift volunteering at the shelter today so they could go for a walk with Bruno. The exercise was good for keeping his ankle strong and with the weather getting so much nicer with spring starting it was beneficial all around.
He only had a couple of cages to go before he was done and he'd just opened the first one when Kinsley had walked in with Bruno in tow on his leash. The automatic smile that always spread across his face at the sight of her was given in greeting as he reached into the cage to scoop out the fluffy kitten huddled inside. It mewed softly before he offered it out to Kins to hold while he cleaned out its temporary home. It wasn't a long or arduous process and in less than a couple of minutes it was ready for it's occupant to be returned. The door to the shelter opened then, a little bell ringing to announce this new arrival and Sawyer automatically glanced up, just in time too, before his name was being shouted enthusiastically and the young man the voice belonged to had run over and pulled him into a bear hug. Saying Sawyer was shocked would have been an understatement, caught absolutely and completely off guard by the sudden display of affection from someone that to him was a complete stranger. Or at least he couldn't say he recognized the younger man.
Sawyer started to shake his head slightly as the boy continued talking as if they knew each other, pulling back from the embrace with a look of confusion on his face. "I-I'm sorry but I think you're mistaking me for someone else...I-" His voice stammered slightly, not sure how to handle things quite entirely. How had he known his name? Coincidence maybe? Sawyer wasn't sure what to think. Making things even more weird was the fact that they shared a strikingly similar appearance. Curly brown hair, facial shape and even their build. Sawyer was a couple of inches taller and had blue eyes verses the boy's dark brown but there was no deny the resemblance. Still it could be as much of a coincidence as him knowing his name. Unsure just what else to say, Sawyer glanced over at Kinsley, something of a lost puppy look in his eyes. What should he do now? If only he could know for sure. If only he actually had his memories back.

It had taken about three weeks, but she was glad it was finally over and done with. It had been one of the worst few weeks due to her lack of sleep and irritablility. She was surprised Sawyer hadn’t gotten tired of her crankiness and Remy had put up with her through the whole thing. But she had gotten a few good nights of sleep and she was back to normal, which she was most happy with. Remy was onto an Ellis, so he was busy today and Kinsley took the opportunity to spend some time with Sawyer, who she had seen little of for weeks. The only time they had really seen each other was at night when she finally got home or in the mornings before he left for work—and that one time when they literally ran into each other in nothing but towels. That had been embarrassing and not the first time it had happened. Kinsley had relayed the nights events to her best friend Kimmi the first time it had happened, and it was so embarassing she promised herself to never talk about it again. She’d not tell Kimmi about the second time because she would joke about it and tell her to run around in her underwear again.
She put the leash on Bruno and kissed the top of Benxie’s adorable head. She meowed at Kinsley and she smiled back, meowing to the cat as if she could speak kitten. Benxie pawed at her hand and Kinsley ran her hand down her back affecionately. “We’ll only be gone for a little while and then you can have dinner, okay?” She stood, grabbed her purse and headed out the door with Bruno leading the way. He stopped to smell the flowers and peed on a bush before Kinsley took him to the car. He jumped right into the front seat and she closed the door behind him. She got behind the wheel and drove to the vets where she was picking up Sawyer.
Kinsley was so glad he had found something that he liked to do. Volunteering was a good way to get your resume some good content and a good way for Sawyer to make some good contacts for future reference when he applied for a job that would pay him some good money. She hoped one day that Sawyer would have a job of his dreams, though she had no clue what it would be. She doubted he did either, but she hoped that one day he did find out what he wanted to be when he grew up. Kinsley knew that she wouldnt be old enough to be anything other than a hunter when she grew up—if she lasted nearly as long as her father she would feel accomplished. Kinsley admired Sawyer though. He had gotten a job and was doing vlunteer work. And even though her father encouraged her to not have him living with her, she had stuck with him for his virtues. He was such a great guy and she was as close to him as she was with Kimmi, though on a completely different level seeing as she couldn’t talk to Sawyer about boys AKA him or Remy.
She arrived at the vets office and pulled Bruno out of the car on her side so she didn’t have to walk around. The tan pug jumped ahead, ready to smell all the other animals around him and Kinsley grinned at how silly he looked as he ran towards one thing and caught whiff of something else, only to jump at that thing. He was an ADD mess. Kinsley loved her dog so dearly. And thankfully, so did Sawyer.
She opened the door where he was and Bruno just about choked from running and tugging so hard on his leash. Kinsley smiled widely at him as she always did when she saw him and Bruno jumped up on his leg in greetings. Kinsley looked into the cage where Sawyer took out an adorable little white kitten and handed it to her. “Oh, my God I want him. Look at his adorable blue eyes!” she cooed and cuddled the kitten as he cleaned out the kitten’s cage. Her voice was about an octive higher as it always was when she talked to animals, and the cat was so adorable she thought her heart was going to burst. “He’s so precious, I need him.” she said softly.
And this was exactly why she never came to the animal shelter. Every time she came, she wanted a new animal and by golly if she hadn’t somehow managed to not become the crazy cat lady. The last few times she had come to see or pick up Sawyer, she had found at least one animal that she wanted to take home. He had coaxed her out of not getting them though. She doubted he would be able to get her to not buy this kitten though. It even licked her wrist as she stroked its ears. She was about to tell Sawyer that she was getting the cat when the door opened. Just as Sawyer, she looked at the entrance instincively. When the boy, who had a very familiar-looking face called out to Sawyer, she stopped petting the cat and looked between him and Sawyer. She stared as the boy ran to Sawyer and attacked him with a giant hug.
Kinsley felt a prickling of her skin. Apparently they were brothers, which was why he looked so familiar. The boy looked just like Sawyer only a little shorter and with a baby-face. Kinsley finally caught herself and realized that Sawyer was looking at her to save him from the situation. Kinsley stuck out her hand and grabbed the boys, whose name she didn’t catch. “I’m Kinsley. It’s nice to meet you,” she gave the boy a smile. She handed the kitten to Sawyer and put her hand on his chest. “I’ll be right back, okay. Just finish up here and I’ll find out what’s going on.” Kinsley gave Sawyer a calming look and turned back to Sawyer’s apparent brother.
She grabbed the boy;s shoulder and steered him out of the shelter, still holding onto Bruno’s leash. He sat next to her foot patiently as she stopped to look at him. “Who are you? Are you Sawyer’s brother? Because if you're just playing some kind of game to get him alone so you can kill him, I will slit your throat. He's too naive to know the bad people out there who could possibly be hunting him down, and if you're one of them, I suggest you get the hell out of here.” Kinsley looked curiously at him wanting answers. If he was Sawyer's brother, he had better have some solid proof, because there was no way in hell she was going to let him see Sawyer otherwise. She was too suspicious of people as of late, and she didn't know what she would do without Sawyer around. She prayed that this harmless-looking boy wasn't going to try to do any harm to either Sawyer or her because she was in no mood to mess up her jeans or scare Bruno today. So he had better have some answers, and quickly because she was supposed to be having a wonderful, eventless day with her roommate, not some dramatic meeting with some possible [/s] relative of Sawyers, even though that seemed like a better day than what she had planned because it could give them the answers they had both longed for. seasons change but you remain the same a steady heart, a sun to rain
Seeing Sawyer again and be able to hold him in the flesh was better than sex itself. He had thought that his brother was dead all this while, and the guilt that had weighed down upon his shoulders was finally lifted. Even if his apparent 'death' wasn't Bear's fault, the younger Rhys had been unable to shut out the dark whispers that had murmured in his ear, blaming and taunting him for running away, and leaving his brother to die. He had wondered, over and over again, what would have happened had he refused to listen, and decided to stay. The outcomes were simple, they would either die together, or come out of the whole ordeal alive. Benjamin struggled to believe the latter option, but deep down, he knew full well that the both of them would have died had he not left. Nevertheless, the past aside, he was only glad that Sawyer was alive and survived the attack. Nothing else mattered, not even including the blonde girl that had been standing next to Sawyer before he barged in, or the stares from the other volunteers.
What he didn't expect, however, was the sudden shift in his older's brother stance, one that he recognized all too well. It was awkwardness, and he could even smell it. He had expected a loud roar in return, and a hug as well, but after moments of stiffness, Sawyer was pulling away. Automatically, Benjamin stepped back as well, a nagging feeling that something was wrong rising up from his chest. His look of elation replaced by equal confusion and hurt, he gazed into his brother's blue eyes. It was as though he was gazing back into a stranger's, It was clear that the older Rhys had no idea who the hell he was, and as much as Bear wanted to say that he had hugged the wrong person and apologize to ease the rejection he felt, it was indeed Sawyer all the same. What had they done to him? A tiny trickle of anger bubbled up in the curly haired boy. He reined in the temptation of grabbing Sawyer by the collar of his shirt and demanding to know what happened to him, why couldn't he recognize him, and most of all, despair in the fact that he didn't know who Bear was.
Bear followed his gaze to the blonde girl, and glanced back at Sawyer, narrowing his eyes. It was apparent that they knew each other, or else he wouldn't be staring at her. Either that or he was looking to strangers for help. It was highly unlikely, and feeling suddenly awkward under the scrutiny of the blonde girl's gray eyes, he felt his anger and despair ebb away to be replaced by confusion. As he looked at the attractive young lady that was linked to Sawyer somehow, he blinked at her, wondering if he she had the answers that he seeked so desperately. The rejection still stung him, and he tried to ignore the new choking in his throat. This simply wasn't the right place to cry and despair, he could lick his own wounds later. Right now, what he wanted was answers.
"Uh, Benjamin," he replied, though he had jumped a little when the girl, who introduced herself as Kinsley, suddenly grabbed his hand. Shaking it, he let go and watched the exchange between her and his brother. So, she did know him. Questions burned into his mind immediately, the top one no doubt a really now, who the hell are you dammit. He was fully aware that it was it was rude, but his mind was currently a rave of emotions, and he wanted to be as direct as possible. Nevertheless. he held his tongue, and decided to wait, keeping his silence even when Kinsley grabbed his shoulder and steered him outside. Hie legs followed her automatically, there was no need for the other people of the shelter to be involved in this. And, as much as Bear reluctantly admitted to himself, Sawyer looked as though he needed space. Bear couldn't forget the startled, confused look in his brother's blue eyes, and the rejection stung him more painfully than ever. His brown orbs hardened into a steely look as he looked down at Kinsley, and waited.
The boy barely had time to notice the panting pug at the woman's feet and the leash in her hand when she spoke. As the words flowed from her mouth, Bear was simply staring at her, startled, his mouth slightly agape. Slit his throat? Kill him? Naive? As far as he was concerned, his brother was not in the slightest bit naive, he was one of the most intelligent and sharpest people out in the world. It all came down to the same burning question: what really happened to Sawyer? The boy bit his lip and looked uncertain, unsure of how to reply to her accusation, but he didn't take his eyes off Kinsley. As least she knew about the threat that loomed over the elder Rhys' head, but he doubted that she knew that it was Papa Rhys himself.
"I'm...I'm Benjamin. Benjamin Rhys. But you can call me Bear." he replied hesitantly. "I'm Sawyer's younger brother." Running a hand through his mop of curly hair, he prayed that Kinsley wouldn't try slitting his throat, or else he would have came here for nothing, and Saywer would still eventually probably die should their father finally decided to strike. "I came here because I heard that he was alive." Bear's voice shook slightly and he turned away from the blonde to look at the shelter. "And to warn him of the um....bad people that you said." Pausing, he then added, feeling that it was essential to share as much as information as he could with the blonde woman, since she seemed to be Sawyer's guardian as well. Intimidating as she was, Benjamin felt as though he could trust her, since after all, she was with Sawyer. "I'm afraid that our father might be coming soon to finish off what he started over the past few years, and I want to be there with Sawyer when he finally does..."
Trailing off, he looked at Kinsley. "Now that I've told you who I am, may I ask who really are you? How do you know my brother? I know that he was taken all the way from Boston to here, but how did you find him?" [style=width:430px; padding-top:15px; padding-bottom:15px; background-color:white; border:3px solid black;] [style=padding-top:3px; padding-bottom:3px; width:400px; background-color:black;][style=padding-top:20px; padding-bottom:20px; width:394px; background-color:#006699;][style=color:white; font-family:yanone kaffeesatz; font-size:15; letter-spacing:6px; text-transform:uppercase;]feel so far from home [/style][/style] It was sort of a running joke between Sawyer and Kinsley that she was slowly going to end up with the entire population of strays in Manuka because every time she came to see him at the shelter she met a new little ball of fur she wanted to adopt. He couldn't say he blamed her for the desire either seeing as he often felt exactly the same way when he was taking care of the animals. If he was independently wealthy he'd probably do just that, however, lack of funds kept him from from starting the next Noah's ark and so far he'd been able to keep Kins from taking them all home too. However, he'd been thinking about surprising her with one for a little while, in way of a sort of thank you for everything she'd done for him. A kitten would be the more cost efficient choice and seeing as there were always more of them waiting for homes it seemed he'd made up his mind about it. All that was left was to find the perfect one.
The one he'd just handed Kinsley he had actually discovered on the front steps that morning when he arrived for his shift, huddled in a cardboard box all by himself. One look at those big blue eyes and Sawyer's heart had been captured, not a necessarily hard task when it came to an animal (or human really for that matter) in need. He'd scooped him up, gotten him all cleaned up and snuggled in one of the cages before going about his regular duties. By the time Kinsley had arrived Sawyer had decided this was the kitten for her and judging by her reaction to him it was the perfect choice indeed. Chuckling softly as he listened to her cooing at the little feline softly, Sawyer had been about ready to see if he could pry the kitten away from her when things had taken their surprising turn.
Caught off guard would have been putting mildly what Sawyer was feeling at the unexpected hug from someone that to him was a complete stranger. Obviously that wasn't the case for the curly haired boy giving that said hug and Sawyer almost felt badly having to tell him he had made a mistake in identity after hearing the depth of feeling in the young man's voice. It had only taken a few seconds for things to become awkward and Sawyer couldn't help the slight pang in his chest at the hurt look in the stranger's brown eyes. Hurt and confusion at being told he wasn't hugging who he thought as he obviously was one hundred percent certain he had been. The way they stared at him, big and now increasingly sad, it somehow nagged at him almost as if he should recognize them. Or maybe he just wished he did so he could wipe that desperate look off the kid's face. Either way he couldn't place him at all even though he was racking his brain for any slight clue he might have seen him before.
It was slightly unnerving though, the similarities he could see between them just in the few short moments the boy had been standing there. The same mop of curls, same build and face shape. Aside from being obviously a bit younger than Sawyer he was almost a spitting image and that was enough to cause a sort of clammer in his head. What if he really did know him? What if this was a family member and they'd been searching for him all these months? Or what if he was involved with whoever had beat him to a pulp in the first place and caused this whole mess? The fact that he honestly couldn't say for certainty what the answers to those questions might be began to feel slightly overwhelming and resulted in him turning to the one person he knew he could trust. Kinsley. She was wearing a rather shocked expression herself, staring at this newcomer with a scrutinizing look before suddenly seeming to become aware of his silent plea for help and quickly stepped in to introduce herself.
What would he do without this woman? Sawyer didn't really want to contemplate that answer just then, simply relieved she was willing to pop her head into this unexpected situation just then. The boy seemed a bit surprised at the hand she suddenly thrust towards him and Sawyer just barely heard the name he gave her in return before Kins was turning towards him, handing back the kitten and assuring him calmly that she was going to get to the bottom of things. She emphasized her point by gently placing her hand on his chest and that, combined with the tone of her voice had his mind slowing back down for a moment and he nodded mutely in acknowledgment. Without wasting another second she spun back around and was rather firmly leading the young man out of the shelter's front door. Any other time it would have made Sawyer smile in amusement seeing as most people saw her and completely underestimated what she was capable of which was quite a bit he'd learned thus far in few months they had lived together.
Gently placing the kitten back inside the newly cleaned cage, Sawyer took a deep breath to steady himself before quickly cleaning out the last cage. Only after he got done and was latching it did he notice his hands were shaking and grimaced slightly. He hadn't thought he'd been that rattled by the stranger but apparently he'd been wrong. Heading for the back, he stopped by the manager's office to let him know what was finished. Knocking lightly against the door frame to alert him of his presence, Sawyer spoke quickly, "Hey, Dan, all the cages are cleaned out in the front and in the other room too," The middle-aged man seated at the desk in the center of the room looked up and smiled at the words. "Thanks, Sawyer, I appreciate it. Wish we had ten more of you here," Receiving the praise with a faint smile, Sawyer replied sincerely, "Not a problem. I was wondering if you could do me a favor too actually and put an adopted sign on the cage with the white male kitten I found on the steps this morning and I'll bring in the money for the adoption fee tomorrow morning, Grinning, Dan chuckled. "Finally found one you couldn't resist huh? I'll go do that now and don't worry about the money, he's all yours," Thanking the man with a little wider of a grin, Sawyer let him know he'd be picking him up tomorrow then. He would have done it now but he was still unsure about what was going to happen with the stranger outside with Kins and decided to put it off until that was squared away. Or at least he hoped it would be by then. Just a misunderstanding. That was it. Nothing more. Or so he kept repeating over and over in his head. Which was starting to pound like a drum. The headaches he'd had while in the hospital were steadily becoming less and less frequent and usually only accompanied the nightmares that were plaguing him more and more. He hadn't told Kinsley that though, didn't want to worry her. Stopping by the small break room in the back of the shelter he washed his hands and grabbed a drink of water before heading out the back door and around until he saw Kinsley's car. He had half thought about going all the way around front to see if she was still talking to the boy but decided against it. Hopefully she'd find out that it had just been a misunderstanding and that would be the end of it. If it wasn't though... Well Sawyer was trying to prepare himself as he leaned against the side of her car, reaching up to rub his temples slightly, willing the growing headache to go away. There were only a few plausible reasons he would do that and one would include that sure he was his brother. But another could be that he was one of the people who had left him beaten and broken in the woods so badly that he had serious head damage to the point of anesthesia. Although the boy didn’t look like he could beat someone senseless like that and looked kind of innocent and naïve, it was exactly that which made her so suspicious of him. She knew how to play the innocent card as well, maybe even better than the average hunter so she knew how easy it was to manipulate someone into thinking you were completely ignorant to the fact that there were such things creeping in the night that could kill you in a millisecond. But there was also something about him that screamed genuine and she couldn’t let that go. She couldn't ignore the way his eyes lit up and looked at Sawyer as if he was the only person in the entire world. Kinsley looked between the two, seeing the obvious confusion written on Sawyer's face. If someone had come running up to her like that she'd be just as confused, but then again she hadn't lost her entire life and started over fresh like him, so it would have made no sense for her.
Kinsley knew she had to figure out who the hell this kid was before she let him around Sawyer for too long. She wasn't about to let some random guy pretend that they were his family before she interrogated him. It seemed that Sawyer was at a loss for words anyways, and she immediately took the opportunity to drag him outside. She wanted to know all about him and why he was here. There was a strange feeling that he was here for something other than just a family reunion, but she wasn’t sure why it was there. What the hell else kind of reason would someone have?
He called himself Benjamin Rhys when she finally got him outside. He almost looked like a scared little puppy and had those same big, adorable sad eyes like Sawyer. The familiarity and sameness between them made her kind of believe that he could be Sawyer’s brother, but she didn’t let herself fully believe him without some kind of proof. “Okay Bear, well do you have some kind of proof to show me or am I supposed to just take your word for it?” Kinsley crossed her arms under her chest and looked at him with furrowed eyebrows. Bear decided to tell her a little story though instead of handing her some kind of proof of him being related to Sawyer. And she listened intently for any slip up in details.
Because her dad was a cop she had learned all sorts of interrogation tactics, ways of knowing if people were lying, and whether or not they were even remorseful about what they had done. Right now, with all her training on body language and stuff, she didn’t get a single trace of dishonesty from him, which was not all that surprising. Kinsley felt a little bit relieved that he had been honest because she was getting more and more excited by the second of Sawyer having real family right here in Manuka. It could mean that he had other people here to go to and learn more about himself. Except, she thought, that if he had other family here in Manuka, he’d probably end up leaving her to go stay with them, and Kinsley couldn’t ignore the fact that that made her stomach turn a little bit.
But when Bear said that it was their father that had done this to Sawyer in the first place, Kinsley’s arms dropped to her sides and her fists clenched. “It was your dad? How’d you find out about that?” she asked and tried not to act annoyed towards him because he wasn’t the one who had done it. Kinsley felt fierce anger rise up in her and hoped it wouldn’t suddenly bubble over in front of Bear. What kind of father tried to kill his own son? Especially Sawyer, who was the most loving and kind person she knew. Sawyer didn’t deserve to have such a terrible father and when she found that son of a bitch, she was going to enjoy killing him.
“Boston?” she asked before telling him anything about her. She wasn’t worried about letting him know all about her. Her mind was so focused on getting all the facts straight about Sawyer’s life right now that she couldn’t even think about herself. Also the fact that Sawyer’s family was from Boston made her feel slightly better because that meant he wouldn’t have to leave her. But that was so far in the back of her mind that she ignored it well enough to stay angry at Sawyer’s and Bear’s dad for the time being.
Kinsley sighed slightly before telling Bear who she was. “I was the one who found him in the middle of the woods. He was seriously injured, almost dead, but I got to him in time to get him to the hospital," Kinsley informed him. “He had no idea who he was—still doesn’t. I know he has dreams sometimes, but he never remembers them enough to know much of anything. That’s why he was so confused when you showed up. Sawyer doesn’t know who you are.” Kinsley felt like reaching out and touching his shoulder because she knew that it was news he wasn’t expecting or wanting. She’d be heartbroken if her dad didn’t know who she was. But Kinsley kept her ands by her sides, still clenched into balls, but a little looser as time went on. “I kept tabs on him while he was in the hospital and we became good friends and we trust each other. I might be the only person in Manuka he trusts at the moment other than maybe Dan, his boss, but I’m unsure of that still. Anyways, he’s staying with me until he can get his own place.” Finally her fists unclenched and she didn’t feel too much anger.
Kinsley looked at Bear with curiosity for a second before sighing and saying, “We better go tell Sawyer the good news.” She started walking around the building to go to her car where she figured he’d be by now. When the car got into sight, she smiled when she saw Sawyer. When they reached him, Kinsley looked between the two brothers and stood beside her roommate. “Sawyer, this is Benjamin Rhys, but you can call him Bear. He’s your brother.” She looked up at him and grabbed his forearm softly.

seasons change but you remain the same a steady heart, a sun to rain
Somehow, Bear had the feeling that his ass would be more than just simply kicked if he so much as posed a threat to Sawyer. Although the possibility of that happening was zero as there was no way in hell that he was ever going to lay a threatening paw on his older brother, the younger Rhys could feel such an aura radiating off this Kinsley woman. His ass would probably be ripped off and handed to him on a shiny silver platter. He wasn't afraid of the blonde woman, but more concerned at what she could actually do. She did not come off as your typical, average modern day human. Probably the kind that knew martial arts and all, and he was most certainly not ruling out the possibility that she was a huntress. Bear was almost freaked at what he was dealing with. He was not the bravest soul around, but he would most certainly do anything for his brother, and anything to get the answers that he so desperately needed.
It didn't look as though he was going to see his brother again unless he got through Kinsley, so he prepared himself for more questions. Bear was already prepared to answer them the best he could. He wanted so much to find out what happened to Sawyer; it was painful. He hoped dearly that she believed him, or else his quest would have had been for nothing, and he would have nowhere else to go. There was no point in staying if he wasn't allowed to see Sawyer anymore, but if one thing was for certain, he was sure as hell not going back to Boston, His father's treachery had shaken him terribly. He bit his lip nervously, hoping that she wouldn't start kicking his ass or something, he wouldn't know what to do then. Bear was too chivalrous to start hitting anyone for the time being, let alone a woman.
Bear wanted to be there with Sawyer when shit finally hit the fan. He was aware of how little time he had left before their father and Kathryn decided to come over and finish up the job. And because Sawyer had no recollection of anything, he would be completely caught unaware. The last thing Bear wanted was to run the risk of losing him again. He was tired of running, and look what had happened when he had done so. His brother had nearly died because he had not stayed. Bear would probably have died too, but he would have rather died honorably in battle than suffer the weight of Sawyer's death over the past year. He felt shameful, but he had to move on, and continue living in the present and look forward to the future.
"Yeah, it was dad," said the shifter, startled at the sharpness of her voice. He looked a bit sheepish then when questioned as to how he found out, and his brown orbs dropped from hers to look at the ground, embarrassed. A pink flush appeared on his cheeks. "Well, I guess you could say it was a sort of...accident." he said sheepishly. It had indeed been by a stroke of good luck that he had overheard his father and Kathryn talking, and as delighted and pleased as he had felt, the betrayal had been overwhelming. "I heard dad talking to sis the other night so...stroke o' good luck you can say." As simple as it sounded, it was true. The sudden anger in Kinsley at his words startled Bear even more. She really did care for Sawyer, he realized. His brother was a lucky duck, no, bear actually, but still a duck nonetheless anyway. "Yeah, Boston," said Bear almost proudly. Despite their heritage, he was proud of being a Bostoneer, if there was an actual term for it. "Both of us, born and raised. I wonder how he ended up from Massachusetts all the way to Maine though..."
Dead. Almost dead. Bear's eyes widened as he received the information. Those assholes. Bear felt like going on a rampage and looking for them, but there were other imperative matters to deal with for the time being. Kinsley's next words were like bullets, stabbing him in the heart. His worst fears had indeed been realized. Sawyer had lost his memory from the attack. He didn't know shit. He had no idea who he really was. He had no idea who Bear was. Bear couldn't help but groan out loud next in frustration, and ran a hair through his curly locks unhappily. "Aww man," he said sadly. "I kinda suspected that but..." The shifter trailed off, upset, unsure of what to say anymore. He listened as Kinsley continued, and nodded. "Thank you for looking after him," said Bear gratefully. "It's good to know that Sawyer has friends like you. I'm not here to bring him back home though," he added. He had a feeling that Kinsley already knew that, but he still felt the urge to reassure her nonetheless. "I hope you don't mind if I stick around for a while though...things are a little bit chaotic back home."
When Kinsley, satisfied, began walking back towards where she had came from, Bear hesitantly followed her. It wasn't that he didn't want to see his brother; he did, but he was unsure if he could take anymore rejection. Both brothers had been closed in their youth, and to have that ripped away from him had hurt like hell. Bear hoped that Sawyer's memory would come back one day and they could rekindle the bond that they had once had, but he would have to make do with veggie Sawyer for a while. He could live with that, at least his brother was still alive and kicking. While the blonde approached the older Rhys and told him who Bear was, Bear hung back a little, shooting his older brother a tiny smile, not wanting to make him feel awkward again. He even raised a hand and waved a little, showing that he meant no harm even if Sawyer refused to believe Kinsley. At this point, Bear was walking on a tightrope, circumspect and careful with his movements and words. He wanted Sawyer to feel safe around him, and Bear felt it was his turn to look out for him, just like Sawyer always had.

He didn't like to see people upset or especially be the cause of people feeling upset and the look in the boy's eyes had been heart breaking. Like you'd just told him his dog had been hit by a car or his best friend was moving half way across the world. There had been so much happiness and hope the moment before too until Sawyer had stepped back in confusion which in turn had changed the expression on this stranger's face into one of confusion as well. Maybe he should have gone out with Kins and figured things out then and there but deep down Sawyer knew he needed a minute to process what had just happened. Ever since he'd woken up in that hospital bed the question of whether or not he had anyone out there looking for him plagued his mind.
There'd been no wedding band on his finger so if anyone was missing him it would have been parents or siblings he had guessed. It had been a good few months though and so far no one had so much as even hinted at recognizing him here in the city. He'd almost started to accept that perhaps he was just some loner who been in the wrong place at the wrong time. That thought was a bit depressing really but at least if it were the case he wouldn't have to wonder about why no one was looking for him. Now though it seemed someone had been looking for him and found him, or so this kid said at least. Obviously Kinsley wasn't comletely convinced either despite the clear resemblance they seemed to hold to each other and in her typical no nonsense manner had pulled the newcomer aside to get to the bottom of it.
A whole slew of questions were running through Sawyer's mind as he'd finished up cleaning the cages and heading to the back. How had he found out where Sawyer was? Or maybe it had just been dumb luck that brought him here? Was he the only one looking? Or did he have other family doing the same elsewhere? Of course none of that was even relevant unless he really was related to him which Sawyer couldn't help but hope that maybe it could be true. Because then that would mean answers. Answers to just why he'd been in the woods beaten half to death in the first place. Granted there was also a part of him that wasn't sure he necessarily was ready to hear some of those answers but not knowing was almost worse in a way. There were too many scenarios he found he could make up in his head when he let his mind wander.
Not exactly sure what he'd be met with as he walked out towards Kinsley's car he took a deep breath and tried to calm the nerves still threatening to rise back up in his chest again. Kins rounded the corner of the building first and she looked calm enough which meant things must have gone fairly well with the kid. That assumption was proven true as the boy himself followed behind her a couple of moments later, his movements a bit more hesitant than hers. A smile parted her lips when she caught sight of him by her car and it made him feel a little more easy as she came up beside him and introduced them. His brother. The sound of the word on her tongue was strange to say the least but a sudden feeling of happiness flickered through Sawyer. He had a brother! A tiny part of Sawyer's brain was pestering him that this could all be some big lie on the younger boy's part but Sawyer chose to ignore it. Kinsley clearly believed whatever he'd said to her and that was enough for him.
That didn't mean there still wasn't some awkwardness involved though much less than back inside the shelter. Benjamin Rhys. So that was his last name, Rhys. He wished it rang more bells in his mind than it did but still it was more than he'd had before this. It was actually the nickname she mentioned that had him feeling the strangest sense of deja vu but exactly of what he couldn't say. It was a lot like after he woke up from one of those dreams of his. Not missing the very hesitant and uncertain look on Bear's face Sawyer offered a smile of his own at the tiny wave his brother gave him. "I'm sorry for earlier," He offered apologetically, referring to the awkward first meeting. "I just...I can't remember...," Running a hand through his curls he took a step or so closer adding with very obvious curiosity, "How did you know where to find me?"
