Ciena had always been rather fond of animals. She wasn't the type to squeal at the sight of a kitten or a small puppy dog, but still she was able to appreciate a magnificent, or just plain adorable, animal. Since falling about two centuries ago, she'd had a number of pets - twenty nine, to be exact - but of course they were long gone by now. Her last animal companion had been a Ball Python, named Lilith - Lila, for short. The beautiful creature had lived a good fourteen years in her hands before finally meeting her tragic end in the late 90s under herfoul, imbecilic, redneckneighbors' shovel.
Many had thought it strange to keep a snake as a pet, but Ciena could never understand why. They lived easily together for those fourteen years. Lila would slither around her shoulders or coil herself loosely around her neck while she washed the dishes in the kitchen or read a good book in bed. It had all seemed perfectly normal to Ciena.
She strode into the pet store today with no intention of replacing her previous familiar, but instead of finding a new one. This time she'd made a vow to herself to be adventurous and stray from her usual choices. And being adventurous in Ciena's case meant swallowing her pride and doing something completely normal. Normal had always been the new, far too ridiculous, and risky experience she always tended to avoid.
And so what exciting new pet did she have her sights set on? A cat.
She'd never once had a cat. She'd had several tarantulas, a few King snakes, some Lizards... and two dozen other things that weren't exactly your average house pets, but no, never a cat. Not even a dog, or hamster. And so a cat would be a whole new experience - the idea of which delighted her more than anyone could imagine.
She came to a halt by a little playpen filled with kittens, and silently observed each little creature with great amusement. There were five, in total. Two competing for a ball of wool, two snuggled up to each other not far off and another lone cat, in the corner, seeming to oversee the entire situation. It's eyes were an entrancing green, and something about them completely drew her in. An Old Soul cat, perhaps. She heard the term used all the time to describe people - surely, some cats had Old Souls too.
Suddenly aware of another person making their way to where she now stood, Ciena's eyes flickered upwards towards the sound of footsteps, her attention temporarily stolen by the approaching stranger.
