Leyna forced herself out of bed and quickly turned her alarm clock off. She wasn’t a fan of alarm clocks….they had this incessant noise that drove her crazy. But without it, she would never get up on time for school. Once she turned the annoying buzzer off she glanced around her room wondering why she even lived here still…not like her parents wanted her there. They were afraid of her ever since they found out she had powers. Plus they were never great parents anyway. They never really truly cared much for her and her brother. And now the whole having a power and being different just added to it all. They hardly spoke to her at all, which she didn’t really mind. The only person she talked to was her brother because he was the only one that cared and would love her no matter what. Since her parents didn’t care, she would either have to walk to school or get a ride from her brother.

She pulled on random clothes…She didn’t pay attention at all to what she had thrown on but once she glanced in the mirror she realized it wasn’t that bad of an outfit. She had put on jeans and a black and purple shirt. She went to the bathroom to finish getting ready then made her way to her brother’s room. She knocked only to hear snoring…Of course he wasn’t up yet. She decided she would just walk to school. It was better than staying here, bored. She headed downstairs and too the kitchen to search for some sort of small breakfast. She sighed as her eyes fell on a pop tart…Pop tart it is! She grabbed one then went to the front door wear her backpack was. She picked it up just as her father was coming down the stairs. He rubbed his eyes and continued his way to the kitchen without saying a single word to her. She rolled her eyes and left.

The walk to school was usually a nice and pleasant walk. The morning was always quiet, except for maybe some birds chirping here and there. She loved the morning breeze and fresh air. It was a great start for the day. She finally reached the school and paused. There weren’t too many people there because she had arrived early. Her eyes glanced around the campus until she found a bench which she had decided to go to…My as well catch up on reading right? Nothing else to do…She moved to the bench and sat down pulling her backpack around and opening it. She shifted through all of her stuff in her backpack until she picked a book she felt like reading. It was a book about herself…well not her in general but her power, fire. She was a firetamer and even though she wasn’t too bad at her power, she still read the same book over and over again just to make sure she memorized everything. She started on chapter one and began to read the familiar page.

Leyna knew she really didn’t need to read this book so many times….but it made her feel better in knowing that she knew everything she could possibly know about her power. She lifted her hand to turn the page and continue reading just as she heard a familiar voice. Her eyes moved away from the book and looked up to see her good friend Lucian. She smiled and replied, “Well hi there.” Lucian had been her good friend for a while now and she had to admit he was a better friend than any girl friend she had…Usually girl’s came with drama which she hated getting involved in…There was only one problem. She worried about Lucian probably too much for her own good. She knew his secret and probably was the only one who knew. She tried her best not to worry so much but at times she couldn’t help it.

He sat down next to her on the bench and asked what she was reading then took the book out of her hands. She laughed, “Only the same book I’ve been reading for three months now. A book about my power…fire!” When she said the word fire she let warmth fill her body and almost let a small flame come forth but she held it back. She didn’t exactly want people to stop and stare even though she wasn’t the only one with that power. Her eyes glanced around to see that there still wasn’t that many people around. Was she really that early? Her eyes fell back on Lucian to see he still had her book in his hands, she smirked, “Ohh Do you want to read a book? Finally?” She teased knowing he wasn’t a big fan of reading. Leyna, on the other hand, loved to read. She read everything and anything she could get her hands on. She mostly read about powers…things like vampires, mermaids, fairies…She was interested in all of that so she read about it. She basically just loved learning in general. Most would probably call her a bit of a nerd or a smarty pants, but she couldn’t help it.

Leyna couldn’t help but laugh as Lucian laughed. She watched, as his eyes scanned the book and a smile formed across her face. She knew she read the book too much for her own good…and maybe it was time to move on and find another interesting book to read. She probably had tons lying around at home…most likely they were ones she had already read, but that didn’t matter to her. When he asked if she ever got tired of the book she shrugged…”Honestly no…I want to make sure I know everything I possibly can…and the book really isn’t that bad of a read.” She smiled and thought about how well she knew the book. She could probably recite it word for word…in a way that was sad but then again she was proud for knowing all of that.

Her eyes widened as he dropped the book on the bench next to him. “Hey hey…careful. That book is special!”she joked then let a smile show. She giggled as he jokingly laughed and told her she was so hilarious. She nodded “oh I know…aren’t i?!” She laughed again then saw him lean in to hug her. She hugged back, loving the feel of the hug. Leyna liked hugs, unlike some people out there in the world. She found it was as a sweet and friendly greeting, while others probably thought of it as invading their space. Then she heard him speak…She lightly frowned knowing exactly why he didn’t get a chance to talk to her last night. Leyna knew he hated when she worried and she didn’t like worrying either…it wasn’t fun have your stomach all in knots because you’re worried about the person you care about. Just thinking about how Lucian’s father treated him, made her upset. She kept quiet for a couple seconds then, once they pulled away from the hug, she spoke. “My night was…fine…hmm…are you…alright?” She studied him closely to see if he was hurt at all and knew he would probably not like how she responded. Honestly she had wondered why she hadn’t heard from him last night and really didn’t want to think it was because of his father…She knew it was but she hated thinking about it. So of course she worried a tad bit last night…and of course she worried now. He would be so much better without his father. If he could just move or something, she would feel much better.
