The way society read and what they read on was entirely different, but she remembered specifically having to read the rules of the house hold when she was in placed in the Roman house. The servant girl could barely read at that time and had to have the others help her. Now she could read like a pro after so many years. Eleyna could also speak about ten different languages. Having to hop around from place to place, she had to come accustom to whatever one it was. Her favorite was English because it was such a universal language with the accent in mind. She could also switch accents, which was strange to think about. The less she stuck out from everything, the better off she was with the group that was hunting her down. For what? Being different. She was still living what was considered savagely.
The sound of that was always strange. Eleyna was considered a lot of things, but none of the list consisted of savage. In fact, she was a lot more delicate. Lady-like. Gentle. Wasn’t afraid to go and fight for her survival when she had the chance, but the woman in the library at that moment was no survival driven vampire. What most people saw was a young lady, sitting and flipping through the last pages of a book. Of course, historical fiction were always her favorite. It was interesting to see how it compared. Some of the stories really could have happened. She lived through most of the history mentioned in here. Yes, that could happen. Yes, she knew an incident where that happened. Then there was oh no, they would never allow that. No that’s not quite how it worked. Though she wasn’t going to heavily criticize the mind of creative writers. Some plots more regular than usual. Some of the stories never got old though.
The romantics were cute. Predictable, but cute. She was currently ending on one of them. Romantics weren’t her absolute favorite, but it made for a more interesting story line. Eleyna just had too much of that kind of conflict in her life right now. She was going to have to call Marcus. She couldn’t avoid calling him to dinner to talk about it anymore. The vampire had always been bad at putting off things. It wasn’t good for her mind to simple ponder over everything. Dealing with the problem right away was always the best solution. Though she had all the time in the world, it didn’t give her a reason to put something off like she was. She was afraid. Afraid of the answer she had been fearing for this moment. It was never rational to think she’d see him again. But she had thought of it. Now… she felt like she didn’t want to do what she needed to do.
One of the reasons she got here was to see if she could calm her mind down with a simple light reading. It didn’t seem to help. This would be the perfect time for her to have a close friend. Eleyna pushed everyone away. She didn’t want them to be heartbroken when she had to leave without another word and never see them again. She didn’t want herself to miss them. That was something she had to learn to deal with in this life. The solitude and loneliness of it sometimes. It was better than being close than apart. Sometimes, it was nice to have known the person, but it wasn’t something she didn’t want to chance. Yet, at times like these, she wanted to have someone. Just anyway. She didn’t even have to talk about what was going on with her life. Just to have someone to make her laugh and forget her problems was more of the direction she was going for. A light happy fluffy friendship. Oh, but there was so few.
The number was probably more in Manuka than it had been anywhere else. Since this was a haven for the supernatural, there was enough to connect with. So many that she could easily relate. For that reason, it was easier for her to let herself go. Which of course defeated the purpose. Still, as of now, there were no consequences. She hoped that she could say in this city longer than her others. This city had so much personality. She hadn’t enjoyed staying in a city like this since she went to Yellowstone in the early 1900s. It was quite the place. Some of the younger locals talked about getting out of there, in which she hinted to them this was actually a great city to be in. She would avoid the old town more but the old town didn’t take up the entire city unlike other places she knew. Looking up from the last chapter of her book, she saw a familiar face. One from recent years.

Theon had found out quite early on in his stay that Manuka, despite its natural beauty and charms, could be quite lonely. Fall was starting to creep up upon them, and he could already feel the chill wrapping its fingers into the air. He breathed in the crispness during his morning run, and felt the temperature sear his lungs, despite the fact that it was cold instead of warm, as he had gotten used to during the summer. When he wasn't outdoors or working, Theon had carved out a few locations in town to love indoors. There would be a time soon when going for a morning run would be unpleasant: raining or snowing or just too blasted cold, so he knew that he would need to spend his free time elsewhere. Old habits died hard, and he still preferred to spend his time alone.
Therefore, the library had become one of his indoor save havens, of a sort. Because of his love of books, quiet, and learning, it was probably his favorite indoor safe haven. When he wasn't inside in the library, he spent his time at the coffee shop, because coffee had become one of those earthly addictions that he didn't feel a need to go without. He spent enough time perfecting his physique, and was good to his body, so there was plenty of room to indulge and live a little. He felt that it was only fair: if he was to live on earth, he should at least enjoy himself. Shouldn't he?
Every time he came into the library, he felt himself beckoned by a different type of book or interest that was percolating inside his brain. Last week, it had been Egyptian mythology, because he had heard a rumor that there was a being (or maybe it was multiple beings?) that resided in Manuka from those ancient days. Whether or not he believed it, the culture was still interesting to him, so he made his way through four books on the subject and completely lost track of time. If not for the library having regular hours and closing at some point during the night, Theon was positive he could spend days craned over a book. He really didn't sleep much anyway.
This visit, he came to look up something more specific. While he didn't like to dwell on them, he knew that he had more than a handful of flaws, and social interaction was one of his shortcomings. The time had come that he felt a growing need to be impressive to a specific someone, so he decided to read up on how to impress a woman. Sure, the one he had in mind wasn't just any woman, but he figured that with a little inspiration via a broad perspective on how to impress women in general, his own creativity would come into play and he might finally have the results he dreamed about, when he did allow sleep to find him.
Theon wandered down one of the many aisles of books and finally found the section he was looking for. After scanning a few titles and reading the back covers, he chose four or five that he could read through in one sitting, since he was a very fast, yet still thorough reader. Then, as he was making his way around the aisle, he found himself looking into the eyes of someone familiar. Someone who he had only met recently, but seemed like an old soul, someone who might be able to understand him, someone who he might be able to call "friend." She looked at him with recognition, and he wondered for a minute if he should hide the books that he was going to attempt at reading. Not because they pertained to her: no, there was a different woman on his mind, but because the books would direct her specifically to one of his flaws, and he didn't like to give insider information about where he lacked as a well-rounded individual.
He tucked the covers tightly against his side so she might not notice any of the titles and greeted her with a warm, friendly smile. This kind of interaction was also new to him, so he hoped he wouldn't falter too dreadfully.
"Eleyna," Theon repeated, letting her know that he did remember her, as well as her name. "It's nice to see you again. What brings you to the libary? Studying?"
He had never been good at small talk, and his awkwardness showed. Not enough practice. Theon tried not to feel self-conscious, because this would show just as plainly as his awkward stance and slightly stuttered words did, but Eleyna seemed to be the kindly, understanding sort that wouldn't lean toward being judgmental, either. Unless, of course, he was reading her completely wrong. That was always a possibility. Theon took a few steps forward toward where she was settled and waited for her to either invite him to sit down or laugh at him and shoo him away.

November 4th. One would think that after all of this time, she would eventually forget her birthday because they all meshed together, but every year, she remembered. It came shorter and shorter the more years she had it, and she lost track of how old she was exactly, but the date of her birth was always going to be remembered. How she was going to spend it this year was up for grabs. She imagine she would be in the mood she was in right then- wanting to have company but not being able to have any because she didn’t want hearts to be broken later. Perhaps she would just stick with reading all of these tales. They could be enough company for her for a while. Being able to have this. There was some that practically called books their lives. Every bit of them wanted to do nothing but sit down and read. Eleyna was like that in the beginning- as she felt more educated and important, but it was just a nice little cherry on top of a good mood she might be having.
She didn’t expect to see Theon on here, but there was no reason for that man not to be there. Generally, Eleyna didn’t like getting close to anyone, but she figured that Theon would have to understand since he was a fallen angel. He went through more hardships than he had. Eleyna didn’t ask what happened in his history, but at one point, he died, so she figured it would be rude of her to ask anything about it. Though there was temptation to do so. Eleyna loved stories and histories. It was just some were better unspoken. Hers, for example. She would never tell her history between Marcus and herself. Before it was simply it brought too many memories. Now it was more personal than that. The history between the two. Not to mention her attention seemed to be centered. With a shake of her head, she tried to focus on the man before her. She felt great relief and smiled with Theon, which was strange on itself.
He even remembered her name. It made her smile and duck her head. She closed her book and set it off to the side, making a gesture to invite Theon to sit with her. The friendship she had hoped for actually came to her, as if he had been secretly an immortal that heard her calling. With a small giggle to herself at the thought, she mused lightly, ”Oh Theon, it’s good to see you.” Generally meaning it. Sometimes it was just a line in order to make someone else feel welcome, but Eleyna had a hard time following all the things that were supposed to be acceptable or not. They changed all the time. Several years ago, you would have been stoned to death if you have sex before marriage. While she agreed death wasn’t the answer, it just showed the differences. The clear differences that have changed enough. Most people called her classy because of that, but those that knew supernatural knew the truth and story behind it.
A light laugh escaped her lips. Studying? After all these years, she had never been to college. It was one of the life goals she had, but all the required paperwork was a bit of a problem. ”Study? Oh no, I’m just here for a light read.” She told him, picking up the cover of the book. Though he may not have heard of the book at all, the title should have made it clear enough. The picture of the guy and the girl wrapped in each other with the background something you would see in a movie. The covers for all these books over the years were sure changing as well. It was funny what was allowed now. Again with the times changing. Sometimes she felt like such an old woman saying ‘back in the day’ but honestly, it wouldn’t have been lying. She put her light brown hair over her shoulder. ”And what brings you here? You aren’t here studying are you?” She asked almost in a teasing manner. When he started to shift, she saw that he looked a little awkward. Oh what a sweetheart. With a very easy smile, she was patient. Awkward wasn’t a bad trait. In fact, she thought it was adorable. And she could deal with it. ”Please, sit,” She told him, making sure that it was clear she wanted him to sit there. The curly haired man in front of her also looked like a small boy. She wasn’t sure what it was. Honestly, she probably looked like a young girl at times, so the pair could have looked like high school kids chatting with each other. The impression made her giggle but she tried to focus.

Sometimes, it was hard for him to believe that he was memorable. He was quiet, kept to himself, and spent a lot of time alone. Theon had been in Manuka for a few months and frequented the social scene as a ghost (but not literally, since he heard those were around, too), unnoticed and unimportant. Most people, he knew, would likely have a problem with living like this, but he wasn't sure whom he could trust these days. After being so badly burned, one learned not to put their hand on a hot stove or jump in the way of danger when they could see it coming down the road. However, a very large part of him, larger than he wanted to admit, wanted to make friends again, wanted to trust again, and even wanted to love, and know what love was. It seemed to be such a commodity, and it piqued his interest on levels that he was afraid to think about in-depth. Again, he thought about the book in his hands, and tried to hide the cover. He didn't want to be questioned about it, because he knew that if Eleyna asked him why he was interested in such a topic, he wouldn't be able to go into detail without spilling everything.
Keller had been on his mind a lot lately: her laugh, her smile, the way she managed to pick on him and make him feel important at the same time. Her spirit, and her feisty personality... these are the things he thought of now instead of his home and his family, and he felt badly for thinking such things. Living on the earth had changed him more than he had expected it would, and yet he was still hopeful that as the years passed, he would be able to hold onto who he had been, the son his parents had raised, and the person who should have been a spectacular guardian, in the chamber of the upper-crust, was now fallen, damned to walk the land as humans did. Theon supposed he should have taken advantage of the earthly pleasures as he knew many humans did, as well as many fallen angels, A part of him should have been looking for love, for companionship, but angels weren't allowed to love: his parents had been lucky to find one another, and their situation was rare. Theon knew that he couldn't default on coincidence.
Yet, Eleyna seemed happy to see him, and he smiled in response. She really was a pretty woman, and made him blush slightly with her warm welcome. After his initial question, which was meant to break the ice, she replied that she wasn't studying, but was simply there because she enjoyed reading: he of all people could understand that. He had nothing to study by assignment; he wasn't a student, so he read out of pleasure and the quest for knowledge. There didn't need to be a greater reason, Theon just enjoyed the act of getting lost in a good book, no matter the genre. Then she asked the same question of him, and he thought to hide his book again, pressing it closer to his stomach, against the sweater he was wearing.
"Oh, I enjoy reading more than most," Theon replied nervously, still looking in Eleyna's direction, out of politeness and to hopefully mask some of his nerves.
She invited him to sit, and he hesitated for a moment before moving across to her side of the table and sitting in the pre-offered chair. Theon set his book down on the table and covered it with his large, yet still graceful hands, hoping that it wasn't terribly obvious. He wanted to ask her what she was reading, but knew that such a question might spark the same from her in return, and would end up leading him down the precise path he did not want to go. Theon grumbled internally. The only experience I have in conversing with women is with Keller, for the most part... how do I remain calm?
"It's beginning to be cold out," Theon stated, his eyes darting to the windows absently before turning back to Eleyna. He hadn't misspoken: it was a blatant observation, but he had known humans to talk about the weather as a place-holder. Why couldn't he engage in the same custom? "I'm not certain if I'll be fond of the cold; it might not be as pleasant to go running in the morning. Do you enjoy the outdoors?"
Yes, Theon - talk about the weather and the completely mundane, because that will throw her off track of your being completely uncomfortable.
His thoughts raged, but he tried to keep calm, collected, and perhaps even charming, if he could extend his practiced emotions that far. Conversations were still new to him, and while he was a good pupil, he still had much to learn.

It could turn into a dark creature if she allowed it to (in her case and point of view, when she needed to and felt it necessary) but she thought of herself as a warm hearted vampire. Not many vegetarians in the world. That should have said something. Which was why it didn’t make any sense why a group was going after her. Why? What had she done to seriously piss them off? Eleyna didn’t mean any harm by what she did. All she did was live. To the fullest she could go. Though she was immortal, she knew there was going to be a time where they discovered a quick way to kill a vampire. Although with everything happening in her life, she wasn’t sure how any of this was going to turn out. If only it were as simple as something she would read in a book. All of the characters went through the hardest times, but in the end, most of the time, something right ended up happening. Or it wouldn’t be a high rated novel.
Theon was just as nervous as he was when she first talked to him. She figured it might have been first stranger jitters. The not knowing what to say and how to say it. Eleyna wasn’t really aware of Theon’s complete history yet, as that usually meant she had to share her story and that was a little too personal for her, but he seemed new. If he was a supernatural, he hadn’t been one for very long. With her, that’s how she started out with. Especially since women weren’t exactly put highly onto the majority of society. So a woman that was not married, living by herself, and social with everyone at the same time was a sign there was something wrong with her. She hide the most in the United States when witch burnings were happening. She went through one of those once, and she was absolutely not doing it again. It was something that came natural to some. Others, like Eleyna, it had to be learned after years and years of asking and talking. All that happened was her talking. Thinking of what the worse could happen.
Eleyna was in no way frustrated or even judging him. In fact, on the other hand, she found it super adorable. Just the way he would shift nervously. So cute. She didn’t want to tell him or remind him of that in case he didn’t take it in the positive way she had meant it. Instead, she lightly put her fingers on her chin and gave him a reassuring smile, ”Oh, what genres? I have no picky preference. I’ve learned to love all of them, but history has to be my favorite” She said, saying it as if it were an inside joke. She supposed to any human that was around, it was an inside joke. It wasn’t supposed to be known that there were supernatural around, even in cities where the supernatural pretty much populated the area. As there were a vast amount of hunters in this area as well. This was probably one of the biggest grounds for hunters considering the supernatural have made their way of gathering and re-populating here.
He sat down, but seemed super hesitant about it. Eleyna tried hard to make it appear that she was very casual about it. Over exaggerated probably more than she needed to. She flipped over the cover of her book a couple of times, liking the feel of the front and back covers on her fingertips. One thing she did love about books was the smell. The smell she got when she flipped the pages in her face. No wonder people fell asleep in them all the time. They must have put their head down and let the smell smooth them to a deep sleep right on the words. She looked back at Theon, seeing that he had sat down and was trying to make conversation. The attempt was so cute that she had to giggle. Her hand covered her mouth so that she wasn’t gaping obnoxiously, but it was obvious she was laughing. Oh, that was too much. The weather talk. A tactic that had been the very epitome of small talk.
However, she went with it. ”It should matter less to someone like you and I,” Though she couldn’t pin-point what supernatural he was, she knew that he wasn’t human. After all these years of being a vampire, she had learned a couple of smells. Humans and animals- which fit in the same category because shamefully, there wasn’t a lot of difference in smell except humans was stronger- other vampires, and werewolves, who had an awful stench that could fill up an entire room. Though she was too nice to say anything as long as the werewolf, in return, didn’t bother her. She could tell he wasn’t human, but which other supernatural was unclear. Not a vampire and not a werewolf. That was the extent of her knowledge and she didn’t want to freak him out by asking. ”Winter can be enjoyable. You have to know how to enjoy it. Sit in the coffee place in town and see all the snow outside. That makes it almost worth it.” She breathed, knowing the cozy feeling of staying indoors and in a wood’s environment. In her case, she could probably find those woods. ”Outdoors has a pretty view. But I’d rather look at it from the inside.” She told him, nodding and looking out the window as she spoke. The day was still autumn going into winter. She just wished it would get to winter already. The time between wasn’t her favorite. All the leaves had already fallen from the trees and there wasn’t snow. So it was just dry.

Post by THEON JACOBI ALASTAIR on Dec 18, 2012 19:20:28 GMT
Even though they hadn't known each other long, Eleyna made him feel... in a word... comfortable. Sure, he was awkwardly shifting about and stuttering to find his words, but that wasn't from discomfort in her presence as much as it was from having difficulties with the primary principles of human interaction. That term Theon felt was sort of funny in how inappropriate it was to describe them; but they were still expected to interact with one another like humans, weren't they? In a library environment, and in a town where he knew hunters and other people who would seek to do them harm were lurking. Theon hadn't encountered any hunters yet, at least, as far as he knew. Truthfully, he didn't know if he would know a hunter if he crossed paths with one, unless they made it painfully obvious. His acquaintance, Eleyna, seemed to be something other than human, but he didn't have the instincts or knowledge to differentiate species quite yet. However, he was a patient sort, and figured that such information and know-how would come with experience.
Theon was comfortable with Eleyna because she was kind, gentle, and soft-spoken. Also, he got the notion that she was quite wise, which could come from years or experience, or perhaps a mix of both. It was a quiet wisdom, more in the way that his mother had instead of his father's outwardly spoken, advice-based wisdom and teachings that he tried so hard to get Theon to adopt in order to grow properly. Although, the advice had been appreciated, Theon seldom thanked his father for his wisdom, and looking back, wished he had been more grateful and had taken more of the man's words to heart. He didn't hate Manuka, but he still wished that things had been different, so he could perhaps be visiting on a temporary basis, because he had a charge... and then could go home, to his family again.
The young man smiled when Eleyna asked about his favorite genres, taking an interest in him and his enjoyment of the written word. She stated that she wasn't picky, but history was her favorite genre. His smile grew; it seemed that they had more in common than their first, tentative conversation might have suggested. "Oh, I'll read anything one puts in front of me. It's such a release, to get lost in a good book. And I enjoy history as well, but I'd say the fine literature: Shakespeare, Goethe, Homer, Chaucer... those are my favorites."
As they continued their conversation, Theon was grateful that she seemed to even elaborate on his 'small talk' and make it more personal somehow. He felt like she was actually letting him get to know her, which was nice, because even though he could definitely be guarded and had some unsettled trust issues, he wanted to make friends desperately, but didn't know how to go about doing so. Eleyna was making it easier than he had ever hoped. "I've never seen snow... well, I've seen it, but I've never been out in it, or anything." Theon said. He loved the outdoors, and walking in the rain for the first time had been a truly humbling experience; he felt like he was in the middle of nature's true beauty, and it took his breath away. He could only imagine what first snowfall would feel like for him. "I don't know if I could stay inside. I'd see the snow start to fall, and I think I'd just jump from my seat and go play in it." A child-like, wondrous grin spread across his face, and he got lost in the thoughts surrounding snow, and what it might be like. He thought of scenes in movies where children had snowball fights, and built forts and made snow angels, then caught the flakes on their tongues. Could he have such a childlike innocence when he had never really had a childhood? Ever since he was old enough, he began his studies on the ways of guardian angels; it was a serious practice, and something that couldn't be taken lightly. It was honest work, and humble work, necessary... but part of his longing to be free and careless, to be able to roll around in the snow or dance in the rain, was what cost him his wings. It was a bittersweet paradox, wanting something and knowing that wanting always had a cost. The answers to all life's questions, Theon had learned, only were answered by the willingness of one to pay the correlating toll.
He figured that from Eleyna's knowing comments, she was familiar with Manuka, which was something that he couldn't boast at all. In fact, he was still relatively new, and had discovered a few places on his own, but didn't know where the popular places for people to socialize were; not that he'd be good at it, but one never knew until they tried.
"What does one do around Manuka? I've found the library, and a few bars in town that aren't bad... there's a little coffee shop I like. It just seems like there's much... more to this city." Theon was prying a little about the 'other' quotient of Manuka that tended to go without discussion: the supernatural quotient. Eleyna was probably being careful not to say things aloud that might land on predatory ears. But, the information would be safe with him, and he wanted her to feel comfortable with him, just as he felt with her. So, he continued, giving her another hint as to what he was speaking of, and why he was being vague. "I'm just looking to meet others... like me. People I can relate to. I'm sure you know of more than a few places where this could be possible." Theon looked at her for a moment, but then flushed a little when they made eye contact. Eleyna was also a very beautiful woman, and he had learned early on that they were a definite weakness of his. Granted, he'd never have the courage to make his appreciation known, and it was unlikely that she wasn't already spoken for, but the instant reaction was unavoidable. Just another thing he needed to learn how to curtail, in order to become more adept at social interactions.

Not comfortable, perhaps, but she had spent many of her years watching body language and movements to know that it wasn’t as much as it might have been before. Meeting him had been the more difficult part, but once Eleyna realized what he needed, it much easier to get him to talk. It just had to be the specific things that really brightened people’s days. For example, as soon as she mentioned the word books to him, he seemed to really glow and smile with it. Eleyna listened very carefully. Nothing impressed others more than remembering specific details. Those that felt they were just talking and no one was listening, then it turns out, every word. Beautiful expression after that. It put up a level of trust. Trust took forever to build up, but if doing the right tactic, it could be gained a little quicker than having to wait forever. Just made sure it wasn’t destroyed quickly. Very classic. Extremely classic. She was sure there were few people who even recognized those names. Most people have heard of Shakespeare, she supposed, but all the others were so unknown within schools. Eleyna had met a couple of authors that later became famous- like Hugo. It hadn’t been for very long and quite frankly, he had been weirded out by the whole social woman thing. If there was something that she fought for now harder than ever, it was women’s rights. That tended to have a bad name whenever she mentioned that. It wasn’t if it had to be a superior thing. She was just saying each gender had different attributes. Both sides could go on and on about what they did for each other, but in the end, it was just an even mark. No one would understand. Eleyna would have never mentioned something like that to the board. Eleyna made a couple of slow of approval, smiling a little more when he mentioned history. ”Yes, I love all of those. The classics are always safe.” Even if someone of them took more time to learn to appreciate them. Scarlet Letter had to take her a few moments to really understand and she liked the plot line. Just sometimes all of the crap in the middle got away from the big picture. But that was with any book. Old or new. ”Have you read any of Hugo’s?” She asked, wondering if she should recommend that. There was a little bias sight on her part, but what did that matter? Eleyna considered it a great honor. She never would have pictured him doing so well in the writing industry, but he proved everyone wrong. The awkward kid. Much like the kid in front of her. Perhaps he would one day become one of those great artists. Who knew? Though she didn’t know he was immortal. That would probably change a couple of things. There were plenty of mortals who never had seen snow. Still, to hear it out of someone’s mouth when they lived in Manuka, Maine. Despite what people thought, they did have a pretty good summer. They had some pretty harsh winters though. So far up north. The most northern part of the United States besides Alaska. Eleyna had spent much time in her cold weather times, so for someone to say that was interesting to her. She looked at him as if he was a new puzzle that was just put on the table. Her head cocked a little as her mouth made a perfect ‘O’ shape. ”How long have you been here?” It had to be just the summer and fall at the most. There was still some snow on the ground early spring. It didn’t really have many drastic season changes, but some days got up to an intense temperature. Never snow was impossible for this state. This city. She kept looking at him though his eye contact wasn’t exactly eye to eye. She felt like she was getting close though. Eleyna found herself giggling softly as she saw his face bright up once again. The thought of running around in snow for the first time. She tried to relate to her first time in the snow, but couldn’t recall the specific time very well. She was sure that it was something among those lines. ”Well in that case, go run.” Fly be free. That was one thing that she had no desire to do. Fly. Eleyna had often feared heights. Which was ridiculous considering if she fell from any height, she wasn’t going to die. She was more afraid of what it was going to do to her body. It would break every bone she had before rapidly re-healing in the wrong spot. Once it healed, she’d have to rebreak everything back in place. No thank you. Shaking her head, her force went back on Theon, half smiling, trying not to think about her focus. He couldn’t have possibly asked a better question. Eleyna had spent most of her past few months exploring every little inch of Manuka. Part of it was her love for culture and personality it had within the city. The other part was making sure she knew where to hide and what unusual things she should be looking out for. Plus, there wasn’t a set time on how long she was going to spend in Manuka before she had to leave. She couldn’t waste all of her time just wandering around. Looking back and going ‘I never saw that part of the city’ was a sad feeling. Now it was her turn to light up, ”Oh, there is! There is! All the way from the upper state to the old town! It’s so wonderful.” She said, biting her bottom lip. The Carrie’s Press. The castle. The Wilson Mansion. All of it beautiful! He had to see it. ”Why don’t I take you around sometime?” As the words echoed out of her mouth, she realized she had said the exact same thing to Marcus. It took her a back a little bit, but she looked over and saw that Theon was looking at her. She gave a smile back, but the eye contact didn’t last very long, and once again, she found herself giggling again. From what she said, she paused for a couple of moments. ”There are several people that I think could. They’re found all around the city. I don’t think theres a specific place… but I’ll try to think….” She paused, ”I mean, people usually come to this city because of a rough time.” It was all honesty. You didn’t need a haven unless something happened to force someone to have one. WORDS: 1127 | NOTES: THESETWOICAN'T

Whenever he had someone to actually discuss literature with, he got a little excited. Part of him knew that people who appeared his age and actually were probably wouldn't be as in-tune with the classics, or as fond of history and days gone by as he was. But part of the reason he enjoyed it so was because it reminded him of his parents, and the times they had actually seen with their own two eyes. He'd never had the courage or the gumption to ask Eleyna how old she actually was, but he figured that she was older, like his parents, although you'd never know it by looking at her. It was a perk of immortality, he supposed, since he figured that was likely what she was. Some immortal species or another; he hadn't spent enough time with her yet to know for sure, and once she actually trusted him, she'd probably tell him more about it. Just like he didn't tell her much about his past, or his parents, even though his story was definitely an interesting one. Most angels were made; they were humans that had died some selfless death that gained them not only access to heaven, but the privilege of wings. That was how his parents had become angels, although they'd never told him how exactly they died. Some angels were made by God, to be soldiers in his army, but Theon had been born, just like any other creature was born. It seemed strange, given what he knew of science, but supernatural creatures didn't follow all the other rules of biological life, so he supposed that their gestation and birth cycles would probably not follow the rules exactly.
Eleyna asked him if he was familiar with "Hugo," and he grinned brightly. "If by 'Hugo,' you mean Sir Victor Hugo, then absolutely. Les Miserables is one of my favorite stories. Although I do adore his poetry as well." Theon trailed off in thought for a second, speaking his mind without thinking of the words. "Sometimes I wonder if my parents were alive during the French Revolution; if it was all as tragic and prideful as Hugo described. For all the sadness, there was such a strong sense of hope, I feel... and they brought about the dawning of a new era. The Revolutionists, through their bravery and sacrifice." Theon blinked twice, surprised at his own ramblings. "I apologize; it's unlike me to stray off topic so. I'm usually more... conscious of conversation, and try my best not to dominate."
As they discussed the changing of the seasons, which was a good way to stray toward another area of conversation that would allow them to contribute equally, Theon was asked how long he'd been in Manuka. The sad smile that followed her asking the question couldn't have been avoided, no matter how he would have tried to do so. He hadn't come to Manuka because it seemed like a wonderful place to live, after all. He'd come there after he had fallen, right out of the gates, that happened to be just outside the city limits. Theon recalled stumbling, bleeding profusely and in extreme pain underneath a bridge, where he slept for three nights.
After that, he had gotten a job bussing tables at a local establishment, and he hadn't been any good at it, but the owner had taken pity on him. The woman had said that he seemed like such a "sad soul," and he guessed she was likely right. She paid him enough to get him into his own apartment, and sent him on his way, and from there, he did odd jobs, finding that it was best not to stay in one place or one person's employ for very long. Also, it allowed him to develop a number of skills: carpentry, painting houses, mowing lawns, moving furniture, caring for animals, retail, food service... Theon had done a multitude of things, and found things that he liked and didn't like. Now, he waited tables, and even though his social skills were still lacking, and he was rather shy, he seemed to be kind enough to the unruly customers, and charming enough to the ones who already had a pleasant demeanor. The money wasn't bad, and it kept him above ground, and he found that he rather enjoyed working in a restaurant. The hustle and bustle of people, the food, and the hours weren't dreadful.
"I've been here for about six months. Not very long, I know, but longer than a complete new arrival." Theon smiled, hoping not to look as melancholy, then continued. "At first, I was trying to get settled; make money enough to get into an apartment, and then I got tied up in work. I haven't had much time to explore all I'd like. How about you? How long have you called Manuka home?"
Instead of looking down on him for being so new, Eleyna seemed excited to show him around, and even suggested that she do so. Theon completely forgot himself and ended up setting the book he had been attempting to hide down in plain sight, and focused on his new acquaintance instead. He felt comfortable around her, and content, for the first time in a while. It was different than what he felt with Keller, but not in an unpleasant way. Theon had high hopes that he and Eleyna might be friends. Real friends. "Where do you enjoy going? I'd love for you to show me around. Maybe even... introduce me to some of the people you've met along the way. I struggle with socializing, but being alone all the time is lonely. I don't like to spend too much time with my own thoughts." His confession was more intimate than he'd normally give to a stranger, but he trusted instinctively that Eleyna wouldn't use his slight vulnerability against him. She'd smile at him kindly, tell him that she understood, and then maybe she'd grant his wishes; he could make friends, and build a home here.
He'd always miss his home and his family, but maybe there was something to be said for the whole "starting over" theory. Maybe second chances weren't just something from the story books.

He even knew his official name and grinned brightly. While he continued to talk, she had a moment to realize this was probably the most she had heard him talk at once. She took the moment carefully. Eleyna had been socializing her entire life so knew how to talk, but now she had to watch herself now. Socializing and sharing things about herself was the way she could get herself in trouble. It did help that she didn’t see Theon as someone who would rat her out. There were those that she didn’t think would rat her out, but there was a possibility they might of. But with Theon’s personality? How could he? At this point, he wouldn’t be able to tell who was coming after her. It was some reassurance, but not enough for her to fully open herself. Most of the time, she opened up when she felt comfortable. She felt extremely comfortable. Part of her was saying to trust her instincts, but another part of her said take no chances. The thought of only being acquaintances with him made her sad somehow. There was much confliction going on in her head, but it was nice to at least have something in front of her to make her less distracted.
Theon talked a little bit about his parents. She was alive. All those poor people who had tried over and over to get freedom. Most of the time, it ended up bloody and awful, in which they would end up with the same place they were stuck with. A sad tale. That’s why when she heard rumors about the American Revolution, all she could see was repeated history. However, that didn’t end up being a problem. It was interesting how that worked. Hugo’s tale was indeed true, as Theon thought it was. She wasn’t sure whether to clarify for him or not. That was giving way too much away in the small little sentence. It would indicate she was very much older than she looked. He probably already knew that, but the less he knew about where Eleyna had been in the past, the better. It wasn’t so much for his sake as it was for hers, but she had to learn how to survive. Some people thought that surviving meant killing anything that was a threat. She decided to take the more passive route and think that the more passive way of doing things was to sneak out of the situation. It meant she had to look a little more before she took a leap.
There was a small laugh that escaped, not being able to help herself as he watched him trying to be cautious too, but like her- finding it more difficult. ”Les Miserables does grasp you that way, doesn’t it?” Yes, another one she had read. She just had a lot of years on her hands of being stuck and bored. Perfect way to pass time. ”Oh, nothing to apologize for. It was all relative, I assure you.” There was still a bit of an amused tone to her words, as if she was watching an experiment taking place when talking to him. There was still an itch to tell him that she had met the famous Victor Hugo, but there wasn’t a chance. This little urge came and went, and in the end, she was usually thankful that her mouth shut. Nothing was worse than being betrayed because of something that was supposed to be friendly. Still, Theon was such a delight to talk to. She hoped that he would never change.
She had been so caught up in the moment, that she hadn’t really realized what kind of question she was asking. More importantly- what kind of question she was setting herself up for. It wasn’t as if this wasn’t going to come back to her. As soon as she saw his facial expression, she knew that it had been a bad impulse question. She couldn’t help it. It was just something that she was shocked at. Flowing out of her mouth without another thought. Still, she didn’t show any panic. Her face remained patient, and perhaps a little softer considering she was encouraging him that she hadn’t meant it in any ways of making him unsure of himself. Eleyna found that in some ways- Theon was much like her. Which meant she understood where he was coming from. For a moment, she didn’t think he was going to answer the question. She opened her mouth to apologize, but then he smiled and explained. As if he had been debating in his head. Eleyna hadn’t had a clue how Theon got here. If she did, her heart would surely go out to him.
The way he phrased home. Oh, she really hoped that she would be able to call it him. So many places she became attached to and was forced to leave. So many places she missed. The question had a similar reaction as Theon had, but she felt obligated to answer since she had asked an answer first. ”Around that much time, actually. My experience gives me a little edge when I apply for jobs when first moving into town.” She grinned, adding, ”And doctor salaries are enough, so I lucked out on exploring the place. I’m glad you’re settled in. Manuka is one of the best places I’ve been to. It has so much… culture. So much flavor and color to it. It’s like every place is a whole different city. The upper part is a bunch of shinny buildings, and the old part of town has so much spark to it.” She explained, hoping that he would somehow understand. The woman would have made a fantastic history teacher, but teaching was a little harder to flip from school to school from as opposed to hospitals and doctors. Those things seemed to change all the time. Part of her felt bad for leaving patients, but she knew they were in good hands.
His next phrase seemed so much like her a couple thousand years ago that it was like looking in a mirror. Her blue eyes became deep with empathy as his small confession spilled out. At times, she still felt like that. Keeping people away kept for a very lonely life. She would go out and start small conversation, but nothing of what the woman needed. It could have been the reason she was so inviting to someone like Theon. ”Of course! I uh… know how you feel. There’s plenty of social friendly people around here.” She felt obligated to bring out her contacts right then and there, but she figured that was a lot for the guy at that moment. ”It’s hard not to like you, so you should be pretty safe.” She added with a grin, trying to encourage him a little bit more into it. ”The best solution is to find social people.” She told him, looking at him as if saying ‘for people like us’. It was safe to assume the two were caught in the same situation, as hearing his speak was just an echo.

It was refreshing to just be able to... talk to somebody. Theon wasn't always the best at conversation, but with Eleyna, it was rather easy to talk because she wasn't intimidating. She was smart, thoughtful, and had quite a few similarities to his own interests.
For a while, the fallen angel thought that it would be difficult for him to find friends with all his quirks and oddities, but here he was, talking to a lovely, smart, insightful woman and proving himself and his low self-esteem all kinds of wrong. The more they talked, the more he learned about her, and then he interjected, wanting to let her know that he was grateful for all of this. "You know, you didn't have to invite me over here and be so kind by talking to me. But, it's really nice having someone who shares common interests to speak with. So, thank you, Eleyna. That's what I'm trying to say." A slight blush colored his cheeks, and he looked back down at the table, and then they continued their conversation.
He opened up to her, even, letting traces of his real feelings about Manuka and leaving the heavens filter into his speech, and probably letting her see that he was wistful. Sure, he tried to keep a sunny personality most of the time, and he so desperately wanted to be able to be optimistic, but some days were harder than others, and he found that optimism sometimes fell a little short. That wasn't a reason for him to give up, though, and he wanted badly to be in a place mentally where he could branch out and find other people to accept him, maybe even like him, but for the time being, he was grateful for people like Eleyna. When she mentioned that she had a 'doctor's salary,' he smiled: she certainly would be a doctor, wouldn't she? It seemed to fit her naturally caring exterior, and her gentle way of treating people. Or at least, him. "So, you're a doctor? That's a selfless profession. Do you enjoy what you do?" Theon hadn't really built himself any kind of career: odd jobs here and there were what paid his bills, but he knew that with an eternity (and a little luck) ahead of him, he'd be able to find a profession, maybe even a couple that he enjoyed and wanted to continue doing in the long-term.
But there was no rush when you had all the time in the world, and while that was a comforting thought, it meant that he had all the time in the world to stay put, away from his family, and that made him sad. Theon sighed listening to her talk about Manuka; even though it wasn't home, especially not to him, it really wasn't a bad place. The fallen angel smiled softly. "I'm not the most social person, but I do try to get out and explore on my own. I've been to a couple nice places; bars, parks... the scenery here is gorgeous." He re-iterated that he'd been places, elaborating on the little bit of information he'd given her before about his findings. "But you're absolutely right: there is quite the rich history here. Culture, opportunities. I suppose if one was to land anywhere, it's not such a tragedy to land here." The last thing Theon wanted from anyone was pity, and he didn't want Eleyna to think he was a miserable, sniveling homebody who never saw the light of day. One of the first promises he had made himself when he lost his wings was that he'd embrace what life brought him, and not become a hermit or recluse.
Eleyna seemed to understand where he was going with his point, and suggested that he seek out social people. She was encouraging, too, making him feel much better by saying that people would like him, and that gave him hope. Eleyna didn't seem to have any ulterior motives or any reason to lie, so Theon wanted to take her at her word, despite his trust issues. She was different, after all, and the more he focused in on her, the more he felt like they were speaking in some code language where she was trying to explain to him stealthily that she was different, too. It was a bold move, to ask something that had to be shielded so carefully. The last thing he wanted was to potentially put this kind, lovely woman in any sort of danger.
"Eleyna, you're more like me than you let on, aren't you?" Theon asked, knowing that this type of question could refer to a number of things, and hoped that she'd appreciate his trying to be protective of him. A small spark of curiosity lit up in Theon, and he wondered what she was, because he knew there were more than just angels and demons out in the world, and Manuka especially. "I consider myself lucky to know someone else who doesn't quite fit into humanity's standards." Because they weren't human, not likely. Or, if he was wrong, he'd have to pass his statements off as the early development of eccentric behavior.
"For a while, I started believing that there wasn't hope, that I was all alone, even though I had high hopes for Manuka. I'd very much like to be wrong, and have hope again." Theon grinned at her sheepishly, and hoped that he wasn't prying too much into her personal life, and that she wouldn't be upset with him for asking so many questions.
Part of Theon that craved friendship and acceptance, even though he knew that letting someone close was sometimes just as dangerous as having an enemy, he still wanted to be loved and important. He wanted to be just like everyone else, and embraced by those who fell into the same category of 'something else.' Even the special few didn't deserve to be alone, they just had to be smarter about opening their mouths and making acquaintances. And Theon was trusting, for the first time in a while, that he wasn't making a grave mistake.

Most of the people that she knew, though they were pleasant to talk to and filled her need for social life, were very bland. The different personalities were all the same. There were few people she could pick out as unique. Well, yes, everyone was unique. That’s why it was hard to point out the ones that truly stood out. The entire reverse sociology where if everyone was special no one was special. Eleyna had seen it a million times. Theon was one of those few people. She wasn’t sure if it was his overly kind way of putting things, trying not to offend and trying to keep his smile up, or if it was the fact they had similar interests. It was just harder to find those older. Between hunters and other attackers out there (she out of all people would know about that). She missed it. She had met a couple she had seen in the past, but most of the time, it wasn’t on good terms. There’s also something about seeing someone you saw one hundred years ago. In the past, it had just kept her from her heart breaking and a little hope she may see the person she wanted to see most.
Oh, a terrible thought crossed her mind. Theon, unclear and unaware of the elements going on around him. Hunters that managed to get ahold of whatever weapon might have gotten his kind. He probably had no idea. If he had any idea, she wasn’t sure how he was able to fight. Eleyna’s first few defensive fights were brutal. The only reason she had made it out alive was simply she had been hunting wild animals for a couple of years and some of the animals were harder to fight than others. Unless he was a vampire, he probably hadn’t fought much in the time he had spent here. She didn’t know how old he was. She was trying to calm herself down because the thought was horrendous. Made him want to wrap bubble wrap until he could learn. But she didn’t let any of that show. No reason to freak him out over something that hopefully wouldn’t happen to him anyway. Being on the run just did that to a brain. A red pierced his cheeks as she laughed lightly. ”You don’t give yourself enough credit Theon. You say it like talking to you is a burden I must bear.” Eleyna always had to be careful with that. This generation had the idea that if she said something like that, it was to make him feel better. If she was trying to make him feel better, she wouldn’t have used those words. But he didn’t know her well enough to know that. Always made the opposite effect.
Eleyna did like to talk about her job. There was an irony in being a vampire and a doctor (one irony that a recent book had recreated and it had made her very upset when she discovered this source). It wasn’t easy and she didn’t think that she would have ever been able to just start being a doctor with that. The first steps had been all the way back in Rome when she was forced to do it. Forced or she was going to end up killing Marcus. The forced learning way was painful and torturous. It paid off all now. At least she wasn’t just this woman hopping from city to city without a care in the world to help another person. She tried to help in that indirect distant way. Since she had no money to give, this was her option. ”I do enjoy it!” She perked, ”I mean, I-“ She was getting so excited that she was forgetting how to phrase this without too much information leaking. That and she still wasn’t sure as to what species he was. ”I don’t sleep often. I have a pretty good immune system. Stay up strong for long nights. I could live there and be fine.” The last part she tried to phrase as if she were exaggerating. Truth be told, if she just got the blood banks, she would be golden. Except… blood banks were human blood. She never had it, and she knew it was sweeter just by what she had heard from the others. She wasn’t taking that chance.
Listening to him speak was like a tape recorder of herself. Someone understood what she was getting at and where she was coming from. It made her feel like she was less alone in the matter. A big smile came on her face, collapsing her hands together to keep from reaching and grabbing something out of not knowing what else to do. ”That’s exactly what I mean. It’s so unbelievable. What parts have you been in? It’s like visiting a different city each time.” More conflictions came through her mind each time. She wanted him to go and be social with most people, but not all people were good for him. But she didn’t want to mention that because the poor guy seemed intimidated enough for him to handle. It was interesting also how he phrased, ‘land’ as if he had been an alien shooting from space. It could have just been a phrase though. Landing was a slang for arriving. It was enough for her not to ask questions.
His next phrase startled Eleyna a little bit. So he did know. There had to have been some way he would have known. Then he went on and she looked around for just a small moment. Just seeing if there was anyone hiding in the shadows that shouldn’t have been hearing this conversation, just out of habit. She also smelled the area. It was clear. She looked back at him, ”It didn’t take very long for you to notice.” Considering most it took years, ”How alike are we?” She asked. This usually wasn’t a comfortable subject but she found herself eerily at ease. As if she could have been in a hammock kicking back and enjoying the views. When he continued, her heart just about broke in half. All this talk about hoping and not being able to hope with little chance. She was like that. More reflections of herself she found in this man. ”Theon- you would be shocked of how many of us there are.”

It always pleased him to know people who truly loved what they did. His parents had been created as angels, and had never lived a human life. But, unlike other angels (both ones that were created and ones that transitioned to become angels), Theon's parents always loved what they did. They saw their position as one of high importance: protect the humans, care for those who needed help and a watchful eye, and be the best that one could be. Some of the other angels were bitter about being created without a chance to live any other sort of life than one in the heavens without a corporeal body, and others had hoped to transition to the heavens without any further expectations than to be dead and get to rest. Theon looked upon his chances of becoming an angel the same way his parents did: it was an honor, to be able to do real good and help people who needed it. ”I bet you have a lot of patients that really appreciate what you do,” Theon said with a small smile. But, when she began to describe herself, Theon's eyes widened a little, but he tried not to be obvious. He didn't sleep much, either, but fallen angels didn't have to. He sighed a little: that's what he was now... one of the Fallen. One of the damned. His parents had always taught him how to make the best of everything, however, so he would just have to try to find good people like Eleyna and do good works on his own. Perhaps, with enough time, he would be able to redeem himself. Theon knew whatever redemption he attempted would fall on deaf ears to the heavens, but perhaps it would be good enough for him to forgive himself. ”Do you have a specialty in the hospital, or do you just take care of everyone?”
Theon had read books about medicine, about the human body, and related subjects when he had first gotten his own, permanent form that couldn't be changed. Even though his body was less vulnerable than the normal human body, he still found it interesting to know how everything worked, at least on a normal scale. They began talking about Manuka and all its majesty, and Theon smiled when she asked about what parts he'd visited. He was the traveling sort, so he'd tried to experience a little of everything, but in small doses. He still hadn't seen it all, and had only gotten to experience parts on a quick, passing basis. There were some areas that he was becoming fond of, however, and he smiled before speaking and replying to her question. ”I try to keep very active physically, so I go for morning runs in Wailman's Park when the weather is suitable. The Upper State is lovely; great buildings, but the structure of the Old Town is rather charming, even if there are... seedier neighborhoods,” Theon rambled, but watched Eleyna's face as he did so, and believed that she wasn't just humoring him because he was odd and looked like he needed a friend. She was truly being kind to him because she enjoyed his company, and that was quite remarkable to the young man. ”I live in a small apartment in the center of town... it's not much, but I call it home.”
Theon looked at Eleyna and furrowed his brows a little, not wanting to bombard her with questions, but having many in his mind that begged to be asked. ”Where do you enjoy visiting most?” Perhaps, with her insight, he could get a better handle of what was out there, and what he could do to pass his idle hours. If he had his way, the idle hours wouldn't be as many, and he'd find a more steady job that would allow him to keep making ends meet. The way she spoke was a lot like his, well, more like his parents, and that made him wonder... and sparked his next question. She seemed to pause, as though the question surprised her for a second, but then responded in kind, answering his question with another question. Smart. Very clever indeed. Theon frowned a little, trying to think of the appropriate response. Truthfully, he didn't know what she was, and he expected that while she wasn't human, she wasn't exactly like him, either. ”You're older than me, but you don't look old. My parents were old, too, like you are. They were old, and they will live forever,” Theon said, a tinge of sadness dressing his words. ”But I won't see them again because we got separated. They got to stay in heaven, while I...” He paused, and collected his words. How was he to explain to her what had happened to him, in his past? Fallen angels were surrounded by negative mystery, and while he had done nothing wrong, would she believe that?
”I trusted the wrong person. I made a mistake. So, I'm not old... I was born in the heavens, but now I get to live out my days, old, but young forever... like you. Right here.”
As he spoke, he picked up that she was more at ease than he would have expected. She seemed comfortable with this topic, somehow, like what she was (or perhaps it was about what he was) didn't bother her in the slightest. Eleyna was calm, a pinnacle of wisdom and understanding, and in turn, that put Theon at peace. He still didn't know what she was, but now that he'd explained his own plight, perhaps she'd trust him enough to return the information in kind. ”You're not... I sense that we're not the same, in the regard of who we are. But living forever, that we share, don't we?” One of the best ways to start a friendship, he'd assume, was to find common ground. His track record for finding friends hadn't been that wonderful, as Destin had put him into the place he was now. Everything happened for a reason, though, and Theon had to force himself to believe in that, because he wanted to believe that he still had a purpose and a reason for being alive, especially since he'd be around for eternity, if he was meant to be.
Eleyna addressed him after responding by saying something that helped him realize that Manuka was the right place to be. It had been an excellent place to land, and he'd be comfortable in calling it home, one day, when memories of heaven had passed. He wasn't alone. At least, there were more people out there than him; he just had to find them. ”Really? See, that's what I thought! I'm so pleased.” A bright smile littered his face, more than he had given the entire evening, and he felt at peace. Now, he would just have to find others that shared his plight, and hope they were good. Theon had heard talk about the war, and didn't want to get involved. Even though he knew that if he had to choose sides, he would fight on the same side that his parents would have chosen: the light. But, he didn't want to fight and die for a cause that he didn't know much about. He preferred to keep his options open, and attempt to befriend anyone who wasn't threatened by him and wanted to make his acquaintance. People like Eleyna. ”You know, I feel that fate brought us to befriend one another. I needed someone like you to make me feel as though I was indeed heading in the right direction.” They were simple words, but held a lot of meaning and honesty. Theon had been lost for so long, and he was more than ready to finally find his way.

This didn’t happen with very many people. The last person she talked like this to was her roommate, but her roommate had been quite the nomad as well and left not too long ago. Theon just had that kind vibe about him. Eleyna was trying to watch herself, but it was difficult. Her wall to make sure that conversations didn’t go past a certain limit had always been a habit in the past. Now she was having to deal with it and think about it. Although she wasn’t sure how much she was going to keep this up. Usually when she had to think about watching herself, it meant she was just comfortable around him. So comfortable that everything that came out of her mouth was something she actually wanted to say. Sometimes when she visited places, she avoided the very subjects she would have been talking about. Past experiences were usually a bad road to take, as someone could learn everything about a person just on past. The past was what made the individual the way they were today. Like Eleyna would have never been a doctor if not for being forced into the area in Rome.
Sometimes she felt like she wasn’t appreciated, but Eleyna had to remind herself that when someone was laying there dying, they didn’t really feel like thanking anyone. The thing they wanted to do was to relax. Survive. That’s all it was about. She had observed how people just lived for the sake of going through the motions. While she didn’t understand or know those feelings, she pitied people like that. If there was some way she would be able to help them out, she was sure she would jump at the chance. However, a special kind of person had to change their mind. It was the very story basis off of most romantic novels. Eleyna could see the appeal. ”I hope so. I think they do, but it’s hard to say anything most of the time.” She said it in light humor, but he could probably infer that most of the time, not being able to say anything meant something horrible happened. Eleyna worked at the emergency unit, so of course most of them were pretty terrible and had to work at once until they could be cured enough to move to another unit. ”The ER. They usually place me where ever I’m needed.” Sure, after a couple of thousand years of being able to do it all, it was really hard not to know everything. She even delivered a few children. She didn’t like to do that so much now. It was a friendly reminder that was one thing she was going to miss being human.
Eleyna had to keep from giggling picturing someone like Theon running complete with a headband and everything. She was sure that he didn’t run in that, but the image in her head was amusing. Where he ran sounded like a good running scene. It was always better to jog with something to look out. Clear the mind. Make someone actually happier by running. It didn’t really work for the vampire kind, but she liked to think that it did something. At his comment, she actually laughed and nodded. It was a different kind of neighborhood when she really wasn’t afraid of anything happening to her. ”I love Wailman’s Park. You should also look at the meadow to go out and run for a change of scenery.” She liked visiting there in the middle of the night because animals liked to creep into those spots. It seemed like too many hunters were lurking in the forest at night, so the meadow was honestly the better place to go if you weren’t trying to get yourself killed. Eleyna also didn’t like having that information known because of course, it wasn’t going to do her very much good if that did get out and hunters started changing the location in which they hunted. At his comment, she gave him a half-smile. Indeed, it was like her place. ”A roommate sometimes make things a little better. I used to have a roommate, but she was the nomad like me, and she moved on quicker than I did.” She really did miss Nell though. She had been so perky and happy all the time. There obviously had been something going on that she didn’t tell Eleyna.
It was amazing that he seemed to know she was older than him. Even if he didn’t know by how much and what species. He got that they weren’t really the same as well. Eleyna had figured that much too. It was good she was talking with an intelligent person, or else all of this play on words would get them absolutely nowhere. However, it seemed that Theon was as smart as she thought he was, and it really did put some sort of relief on her shoulders. So he was born this way. Her kind couldn’t really be born since two vampires couldn’t have children together, but they could be made rather easily. Not too many immortal supernaturals had children that weren’t hybrids. Theon could very well be a hybrid, she supposed, but those were pretty rare to find. Genes didn’t like mixing them. However, when he said heaven, it kind of fell into place. Eleyna blinked and stood up a little straighter, her big blue eyes now staring at Theon. Fallen angels weren’t all bad, but she couldn’t even begin to think why Theon of all people fell. He was born a guardian. This was the first born guardian she had met. Most died and then became angels. Trusted the wrong person. She softened her stance. ”It’s a pity that one mistake landed you here.” That was one thing about being an angel. It wasn’t like you could do everything perfect for the next hundred years and expect to get back. It was a permanent thing. And from what she heard- a painful memory.
Yes, living forever was a shared trait. It always amazed her that vampires were one of the creatures to live forever, but not werewolves. The pair were mortal enemies. It would make sense they would be enemies all the time, but she supposed she would have ran into several problems if that had been the case. ”Yes, that we share. I have a little messier way of living. Even in my kind, I’m an outcast because of the way I decide to…” How could she word this where it wasn’t going to freak the angel out? ”Survive.” She gave him very vague messages, so in order to not confuse him but to keep it more discreet to people around them, she let her fangs poke out a little bit. Just enough to where her top teeth were touching her bottom lip. It was a clear enough indication, and she slipped them back in. Slipping them out was a sign to her vampire side she was ready to go and hunt, and that she most certainly wasn’t going to do now. At his excitement, she smiled and laughed lightly. A new smile came upon his face. She hoped that whatever other supernatural he met was kind to him. She’d hate to see that excitement that he wasn’t alone and then have it be torn down, because some of her kind was not friendly. At his last thought, she looked down for a moment. It was hard for her to believe in fate. But she supposed with recent events, she should start becoming a believer. ”I’m sure you would have found that out without me. You’re a smart guy. But I do understand. It’s nice to… meet with someone else and get my mind off of things.” Except when she said that, it came right back into her head and she groaned silently to herself.

Listening to Eleyna talk about her work made Theon curious about all the possibilities that he would have with a lifetime on earth ahead of him. It was strange, in a way, because usually that thought made him rather bitter, as it had a tendency to remind him of what he'd lost. But, like Eleyna had done, maybe he could learn to embrace it and put his misplaced energy into something positive. A trade that he could master, or several trades. Theon could end up making a rather comfortable lifestyle for himself, and maybe find something to ease his lonely hours, like she seemed to do with her work in the ER, which he assumed was a very humble, rewarding position. She seemed to be proud of it, which made the young fallen angel smile. ”I never thought of becoming a doctor, or anything, really. I guess I always thought my path was paved already,” Theon mused, speaking his thoughts aloud when she discussed her profession. ”Now that I know I could do whatever I wanted, it's hard to think of something. Isn't that curious?” He knew that he had lots of time to figure it out, and could go about doing odd jobs to make a little extra money until he found something that he really did enjoy. Perhaps one day I'll ask if there's an entry level position at her hospital...
Although death and injury would probably trouble a gentle soul like Theon at first, he would get to see many aspects of humanity, and be close to humans, just like he was always supposed to be. Guardians, in some sense, were similar to healers because they protected and guarded their charges, made sure no harm came to them, and sometimes, could even help lessen emotion, or influence from their place in the heavens to make sure certain things weren't missed. They were an ever-present, watchful eye in the sky, and Theon thought that maybe medicine would be a natural progression from what he had quite literally been born to do. His mind shifted with the conversation, and he listened to Eleyna's advice about a different running location. The meadow was something he had seen from a distance and had wondered for some time about whether or not it would be a good change of location. ”Do you ever go jogging? Because, if you'd like, perhaps we could go together. I promise not to leave you in my dust,” Theon said teasingly, knowing that they both would understand that he wasn't that type of person. Granted, not everyone was as enthusiastic about being outdoors as he was, nor craved the amount of physical activity that he did, but he figured that it would be polite to answer, since she'd made the suggestion about running there. He didn't doubt that Eleyna had a busy schedule, but since they did get along so well, and had bumped into one another a second time, he was hoping that their meetings might become somewhat of a regular occurrence. The brunette made another comment about roommates, and Theon shook his head politely. ”While I'm sure roommates are fun to have around, and I do love people, I think I'm better suited living alone.” Theon laughed a little at his own expense. ”Seems strange, doesn't it? Friendly guy like me... I guess I'd just have too many... trust issues, and that might make sharing a space somewhat strained.” However, he could see how someone like Eleyna would do well with a roommate; she seemed to be just as much the social type as he was, which he appreciated, because her kind, gentle nature was almost infectious. ”I'm surprised you're not settled down... boyfriend, husband, someone who sweeps you off your feet?” Theon's voice trembled a little, because he really didn't want to be too forward, but the hopeless romantic in him felt that someone like Eleyna would easily be loved, and quite well, if the right person came along. He bit his bottom lip, and the topic moved on to a more serious matter, although he would have preferred it stay in a happier discussion – love was a beautiful thing, and he knew it, he had just not experienced it personally yet. Theon could remember the unconditional love of his parents that probably still was out there for him, as their only son, and it pained him to think about how they might even miss him more than he missed them. Trusting Destin had ruined everything, and thoughts of that horrible man shook him to the core. He'd taken everything Theon loved, and Theon had loved Destin like a brother. But, he tried not to let the anger and bitterness seep into his words as they talked. He didn't want Eleyna to see that particular side of him that existed, but had never truly been unleashed. Not yet, anyway. ”I should have been smarter. I should have known that something was... different, but...” Theon began to speak, then paused, really trying to keep his emotions in check. ”When you let someone in and put them on a pedestal because you're a naïve boy, sometimes you overlook things that come back to bite you later.” That was the best explanation he could give, and he shook his head when the memories flooded his system. Because he had been open with her, Eleyna was open with him in return, and Theon's eyes widened a little when he saw the glimpse of elongated canines... fangs. But she seems to gentle to be a vampire. I'm so confused. Theon had heard certain things about her species, but as she spoke, he understood the subtleties and clues she was giving him, letting him know that she wasn't a threat... that she was different, even, than the rest of her species. Different was something that he definitely could understand, since most other fallen angels had a darkness to them that Theon would never share. ”So... you're... a vegetarian?” The term seemed silly, but he knew of humans that didn't eat other animals, and figured that in a roundabout way, this could apply to Eleyna as well. Except, instead of animals, she wouldn't eat humans, and that was certainly a relief. His eyes looked at her beautiful face, and as soon as they appeared, her fangs were gone, and she was back to a completely normal appearance. Supernaturals were remarkable, in all their different forms, and being around someone like Eleyna, who had truly overcome what he only assumed had to be many struggles, was inspiring to the young fallen angel. ”There's no real way to tell, is there?” Theon said with a cheeky grin. Some people didn't believe in fate, but he certainly did. Some things were too big to label as coincidence, and he was happy that some greater power that he didn't truly understand had felt it would suit him somehow to meet this remarkable woman. ”But, of all the other people I could have met, I'm still glad that my path decided to cross with yours.” A truer statement had seldom been spoken, and Theon was a very honest sort of man. Something in their most recent exchange seemed to get his... he hesitated to call her a friend, even though he wanted to her to be one... Eleyna down. She groaned softly, and he knew she must have intended it to be toward herself, and not for his ears to register, but they did anyway. Theon's eyes softened, and he spoke quietly, not wanting to offend her by asking too personal of a question. ”Eleyna, is something troubling you? I know I'm still very much a stranger, but I'm also a good listener. You could talk to me.” Theon crossed his hands on the table and sat up a little straighter, adopting a 'listener' pose and grinning at her, at least hoping to be able to cheer her up and get that beautiful smile back on her face.[/blockquote]

A pity she wasn’t even sure was needed or not since the full story hadn’t come out yet. That was fine. Knowing only the vague parts in order to understand was enough with her. It was certainly more than what she would have given. To anyone else, she would have left by now. Said she was getting a call, and they desperately needed her in the ER. That had only happened a couple of times. One of the witches working there (it was surprising how many witches were doctors) told her it wasn’t going to be the last time. They said they got a glimpse of a giant attack or something. Another reason that Eleyna had been avoiding people. If there was going to be an attack, she wanted nothing to do with it. It was harder than it looked, but for Eleyna, it was just another body another soul somewhere. ”It is very curious. Perhaps you could narrow it down so the options don’t seem so spread out.” She could imagine how hard it would be to pick one thing out of a giant cloud as opposed to something a little smaller. ”I get the impression you like to help people…” She hinted, knowing there were very large amount of jobs for types like Theon. In fact, there was a rumor of a fallen angel that was a therapist. Wise old owl.
She did have to say that she hadn’t gone out to go ‘jogging’ a lot. It wasn’t really something that she considered doing considering that her jogging pace would have been most people’s sprinting pace. Plus, she got enough exercise going out and hunting animals. Most of the time, her kills were cut and clean. Every once in a while, when her head wasn’t completely into the game, they were messier. She hated those days. After two-thousand years of practice, she shouldn’t have been getting blood all over herself. No matter if she was fighting a mountain lion or a deer. That was what was mostly frustrating. The strongest she felt was right after a kill, so even further more of why she hadn’t thought of why to jog or not to job. However, that also didn’t mean she wouldn’t. Perhaps there were benefits she didn’t know about. Some professionals had informed her that when a human jogged, happy adrenaline came through the brain. Even though she wasn’t human, it was worth it to try. ”I’ve never gone out to simply jog, but you know- that sounds like something worth trying.” Then a small chuckle escaped her lips, ”Oh you could try. I’m pretty fast.” Although compared to a fallen angel, who knew?
Suited better living alone sounded probably sadder than he had meant it. Eleyna understood where he was coming from, but even the vampire had found someone before they left. It was all about who to find. Theon wasn’t going to want a human or someone that would bug him all the time. Perhaps in different circumstances, it could have been her. Certainly wasn’t a voodoo plan in today’s society, but probably not yet if that were to ever happen. The pair was getting along so splendidly, it was catching her off-guard. Still, it seemed too soon to suggest something like that. When Theon was suggesting trust issues, it was like listening to an echo of her own words. Someone that liked to chat friendly to strangers also didn’t want someone so close. ”I completely understand. It’s all about finding the right person who knows you enough not to be offended. Or someone you can trust. It doesn’t have to be now though. I’m sure living as a bachelor has it’s perks.” Okay, truthfully, she didn’t know if he lived as one, but from what she understood in his history, that’s what it sounded like. It sounded like he hadn’t met a whole lot of people only been here for a couple of months.
The question took her so off-guard that a faint pink rose on her cheeks. Oh that was a whole different complicated story all together. It did flatter her that Theon thought she was a good enough woman to find someone. Trust her, she had tried moving on. She had dated a couple of very nice gentleman in order to ‘settle down’ or at least get over the one love she had so many years ago, but it never worked. Eleyna had always found herself comparing and found it to be a lesser relationship. What she had Marcus had in the past had been so strong nothing was able to match up to it. She accepted the fate that she was going to have to be solo forever. That was until the bright new theory came and she found him again. However, she didn’t know if they were… ‘together’. That was what was most frustrating. Eleyna didn’t like all this waiting and ‘we’ll just see what happens’. How much has he changed? Did he still love her? Like her? Or had the light between them fade over time. ”Oh you flatter me, Theon. I’ve tried, but something always happens. But I’ve got all eternity.” She hoped it wasn’t the rest of eternity alone.
Betrayed. Eleyna hadn’t really been stuck in that situation before, but she had witnessed it. Most of the time, she had just been looking out for herself, so it was hard for her to really be fully ‘betrayed’ when she was so careful. The thought of someone doing that to Theon made her frown. It was one of the things she feared. Someone being her friend and then them giving her up to the group that was after her. That would literally be the end of her. ”I’m so sorry…” She didn’t know what she was sorry about. That it was unfortunate he had to live through something like that. ”You’d think the heavens would place better judgment to the guilty by association.” Or whatever it had been. Eleyna couldn’t say that she thought too highly of the heavens after the hells they put her through. She did the important roles they put on protecting specific humans, but it was hard to really find anything else. For example, Theon being betrayed shouldn’t have left him at such a heavy price. The man looked at her after that, confused as to what she meant. When everything clicked, she made a crooked smile, ”To put it in such nice terms- yes.” It wasn’t so much vegetarian as it was down and dirty eating, but she liked the nicer term.
She supposed all this ‘better not tell him because of my trust issues’ was out the window. She already established it was hard to look into those big eyes and say something different. He was so sweet. In the past, Eleyna hadn’t spoken of Marcus a lot because it was just a reminder. An out loud reminder that would have easily brought her to hard tears. Things were different now- in a way much more complicated than before. As much as she knew it wasn’t a good idea on her behave to say any of this, the thought of telling someone made her feel better. Someone else on the other side who saw what was going on instead of carrying all of it on her shoulders. Maybe he’d know what to do. Maybe he’d ease her with it. Look at him. He looked like he was just ready to be a professional listener. ”Oh, it goes with such a long story. When…. When I was first turned, I was sold as a slave to a household that spent all the fortunes on gladiators. There was one who I…” Bonded with? No, tell the whole truth, ”Fell in love with. One day, the lions were set on him at the arena. He came nearly dead. I saved him from death, but the Romans saw my secret and cast me away. It had been a long time since I hadn’t seen him. I went to a ball in Manuka when I first arrived… and saw him. I’m so happy he’s back, but now… now I don’t know what to do.” Everything rattled in her brain in a very short moment of explaining. Everything was even deeper than that, but Theon probably wasn’t interested in all those details.

Since the former angel was still floundering around, trying to make something of himself and figure out the mystery that was living a 'normal' life, he was very open to taking advice from others. There were some caveats on this, of course, because his trust issues kept him from being susceptible to words from just anyone. Even though he didn't know Eleyna that well, and knew there was still much they had to learn about one another, her calm nature made Theon feel more open than he'd felt with another person in a very long time. Keller had been the only other to really make him feel like life on Earth wouldn't feel completely like punishment, and there was comfort in that. Taking the steps toward a normal daily existence wouldn't hurt, and the fact that the two of them were discussing jobs really got Theon interested. What Eleyna did just seemed so rewarding, and if he could even tap into that slightly, then he felt as if he could do a world of difference. ”I want to help others; that would be the main requirement to a career,” the young man said, eyes bright with hope. Eleyna had completely hit the nail on the head. It was almost as though she could read his mind, though he suspected it was more intuition than some other power at work. She'd probably had many years of practice, and he doubted that he was too difficult to read when he was feeling comfortable.
”Perhaps your field would be one that I could find an interest in. It really seems so rewarding, and while I'd need lots of training and studying, one could say I was groomed to save others.” It wasn't untrue – the life of a guardian angel was one of devotion, of diligence, and of painstakingly watching after someone, and making sure that they didn't get into any trouble. It was a steadfast nature that Theon still carried with him, despite his exile.
After they discussed careers a little more, Theon started to think of ways where they could spend more time together, and maybe forge some kind of friendship. Common ground was somewhere that he read was a good place to start, and running was one of his favorite pastimes. Not to mention, it was incredibly healthy, no matter how destined one was to live forever. However, Eleyna's response was a little strange to him. ”What do you go out for, then? The scenery?” He wasn't meaning to pry or sound doubtful of her answer, but it was vague, and Theon had curiosity that just wouldn't quit sometimes. That was a trait he got from his mother, who was always questioning things, and encouraging him to be a good student, but question the things that mattered instead of being complacent with orders all the time. ”I'm still training, of course, but I've got some excellent speed. I'd love to race you sometime, win or lose.”
While some men were very competitive, Theon saw life as an opportunity, no matter what a final outcome ended up being. It was true – win or lose, he'd still have a great experience, and that would be enough for him. He'd learned that hard way that when all was said and done, memories were all one got to take along their final journey. Memories of his parents were all he'd have to live on for eternity.
The rest of their conversation continued to flow, and Theon found himself opening up about the strangest things, including his living situation. It seemed very intimate and personal, but he didn't have any difficulty expressing his opinions and current living situation to Eleyna, who was able to listen as well as she contributed to the conversation, which made them very balanced. Neither one was a complete talker or a complete listener, so they had a steady back-and-forth that really was enjoyable for both parties, or seemed as such. Eleyna mentioned that she used to have a roommate, and Theon explained his desire to live alone, which seemed to be something that she understood quite well, from her response.
”Ah, I wouldn't want to live the bachelor's life forever,” Theon said with a small smile. ”I never thought I'd be able to have a domesticated lifestyle, given what I was raised for, but now that it's an opportunity, I'd like to think one day, I'll be able to find someone special and settle down. Perhaps before that happens, I'll find a friend I can trust and a new, cozier place than my one-bedroom apartment.” Granted, being a bachelor did have its 'perks' as Eleyna noticed. Theon could function on his own schedule, stock the house with whatever he wanted, be surrounded by the few things he did own, cook at random hours of the night if he so chose, and could do all of this whilst singing loudly and not bothering a soul. It was nice, but he still wouldn't want it to last forever. Even such freedom could get rather... lonely. His question about her having a significant other made her blush just a little bit, and the former angel almost felt awkward for even asking. Now, it almost felt like an intrusion, but she answered diplomatically, and made him feel better about being so forward.
”I couldn't see how every man in town wouldn't want your hand in theirs,” Theon said honestly. If he didn't already have such a firm gaze on a blonde bartender, he might have even mustered up the courage somehow to ask her on a date. But the impulse was gone because he was a very loyal man, and unless Keller showed that she had no interest in him romantically, he only had eyes for her. Even if she had eternity, Theon knew that Eleyna's prospects would be good, and probably sooner than she thought. ”Don't allow yourself to become discouraged because of a little bad luck in your past. You're beautiful, and any man would be lucky, so chin up.” It was more encouragement than Theon was used to giving, but the woman before him was just so kind and deserving that he couldn't help himself. Especially if it made her feel better.
They swapped stories of long-lost love and heartless betrayals, and the connection between them seemed to be forged even stronger. ”Tell him you love him, obviously,” Theon said simply after she told the story of her and her gladiator. ”I lost too much by holding back my true feelings, and not speaking up and out when I should have gone against Destin. I knew what he was doing was wrong, and I trusted in him to take my silence as brotherhood, but he used it to show complicit approval to his actions, and that was what got my wings ripped out.” He had a point, and he finished strong, hoping that his story and his actions would help her make new, better decisions in her situation.
”If you speak out, the silence won't crush you later when you sleep alone.” The former angel's voice was soft, and he reached across the table to pat her hand. True love was something that happened once in a lifetime. He'd seen it with his parents, and hoped that his match was out there somewhere, and she would make the pain of being alone worth the fall he'd taken to get to where she was.
