Jyli had officially exhausted her book collection. She’d read them all, several times. She’d love to read some or all of them again and again, but sometimes, it was just time for something new to whet the literary appetite. Granted, okay, she could’ve bought- or gotten Gideon to buy- whatever new books she wanted. But she loved the library, and it was like… like a test drive for the novels she wanted to read. She never liked to buy something she hadn’t read before, because there was no guarantee she’d like it. The faerie had done that once- well, more than once, but it failed her once- and it hadn’t turned out well. Besides, libraries were calm places of learning and smarts, and what wasn’t to love about that? Her shiny heels clicked up the concrete steps to the big wooden doors, and she wandered inside with smile, breathing in the smell of paper. Also, her library tended to avoid metal- for some inexplicable reason- and that was just a super bonus. Today though, along with the gentle rustle of flipping pages, she heard the gentle click of tiles. She glanced around the lobby, eyes settling on a rather large poster proclaiming that there was a mahjong tournament today. Mahjong? Seriously? What an abstract… Weird. Weirder still that I know how to play. Thank you Microsoft… she thought with a giggle, before walking farther inside.
As far as she could tell, the thing hadn’t started yet, and the diligent library staff were still setting up the tables- hence the clicking- while the competitors waited in the wings, sitting in chairs or milling about. She wondered, briefly, what the prize was before poking her head around to see the sign-up table still open. Jyli nibbled her lip and wavered. Maybe? She wasn’t really any good at the game, she could just beat the computer on easy at home… but? No no no, she didn’t need to play this, though it looked like it could be fun. No. She was here for books, not a tournament that would take ladies-knew how long. Her legs took her away from the room towards the fiction section that she preferred when a voice caught her attention. ’Miss?’ Her brunette head turned back toward the sound- even though she wasn’t really sure they were talking to her- and responded when she saw the raised hand of the person clearly approaching her.
’Yeah? How can I help you?’ Ugh. Really? Her polite retail-face reared its ugly head as she looked at the young woman, who smiled brightly before asking if she knew how to play. ’Yes, sure. I mean, sort of. Why?’ She’d seen Jyli looking at the tables, and the sign-up sheet, and had hoped she’d sign up. Apparently, they were one short of an even number. An even sixteen, actually. And would she have any interest in playing? Even for just a moment, to even the numbers. What was she supposed to say to that? No, I’m not really here for that? Even though I’ve totally got the time? Please. She was selfish, yeah, but she wasn’t mean. And really, she liked mahjong, even though she kinda sucked at it. ’Sure then. Why not? My name’s Jyli: J-y-l-i. I’m happy to give somebody an easy win,’ she said with a mildly self-deprecating smile, which the lady returned with good humor before wandering back to the sheet and writing her name down.
’Okay, so, your first match is going to be… Abigail.’ After that, things were pretty self-explanatory. The woman gave them the rules and regs and let them play with pretty much free reign. Abigail was a woman in her mid-fifties who was a sweetheart. Jyli beat her anyways, and Abby took it with lovely grace and humility, congratulating her and sending her on her way to the next match-up. The librarian called out the winners- and the pairings that resulted from that- and they were seated. Jyli was now up against a giant of a guy named Shane. Lovely.
