This flirting thing was uncharted territory. Like, 'boldly go where no awkward lesbian has gone before' type stuff, and Joey knew she was out of her league. Granted, the redhead knew that she should have probably been more conscious about this fact before she agreed to go on a date with Jamie, but there was a selfish part of her that just didn't care anymore. For so long, she had hoped that someone would pay attention to her and actually want to try to be with her despite the fact that she was nerdy, socially inept, and completely shy with women. Jamie... she definitely didn't seem shy, and while Joey knew that she was in no place to ask about her new acquaintance's history with other women, the human would wager a guess that she wasn't new to the whole flirting thing. Or probably even the dating thing, which meant she likely had experience with the sex thing, and that was what cemented the fact that she was completely out of Joey's league. Just be happy that she's interested in you, even for a minute. It probably won't last. Soak it up while you can, awkward turtle.
Joey hated that sometimes she got down on herself, but knew that it was always for a reason that made logical sense. She'd never really been special, yet when Jamie complimented her, saying that she didn't give them out unless it was deserved, it almost made the redhead feel... special. Well, okay, it did make her feel special. Really special. It kind of made her feel awesome, actually, and she blushed. ”I'm terrible at giving physical affection. Even though I totally know I like girls, sometimes the idea of even holding hands with a really hot woman kind of makes me feel like I'm going to pass out.” Joey said, then her eyes widened. Wow... fail. Quickly, she wanted to backpedal, because Jamie really didn't need to know just how awkward she really was. All the time. Since the day she was born, probably. ”You totally didn't need to know that. Just ignore the word vomit, and let's pretend I said something supremely confident like 'don't tempt me to be physically affectionate, or I'll have my wicked way with you right here and now.' Um, or something.” Joey wanted to crawl into a hole and hide. Really, because if she wasn't saying something that was completely embarrassing one way, she was failing in some other way that made her want to take a class, or something, on how to talk to girls. There was a rumor about one of the professors at the college being kind of a womanizer, but she knew who that professor was, and he kind of scared the crap out of her. Sheer size. Made her feel like a dwarf. Well, if she couldn't flirt, she could definitely talk, and appreciated that Jamie was a talker, too. They talked about different topics that the other redhead's little 'game' exposed, and Joey was actually kind of surprised that they had a few things in common. Okay, the coolness of being obsessed with a new guitar vs. a new MMORPG was sort of like the difference between having a pet hamster and a pet Savannah cat, but y'know. She already had gotten used to the fact that she'd always, always look kind of lame next to Jamie and her 'rockstar' lifestyle. If the other redhead liked her anyway, well... bonus points. ”I wish I could stop wanting food just because I was too into a game or something. As it stands, the last time I got into a new MMORPG, I ended up moving the toaster next to my computer desk so I could make Pop-Tarts from a seated position. Nerds: we're resourceful.” All the pet names and compliments were doing something to her. Softening her up, making her more pliable and more... confident? Was that what the feeling in her chest was every time Jamie smiled at her a certain way or called her names like 'sweetie' and 'sugar?' It was nice, feeling like someone only had eyes for her for a change, and even though she was kind of starting to figure out that this woman had some game. She probably had women eating out of the palm of her hand, and often, which made Joey kind of... flattered. The redhead was a little shocked that she wasn't more insecure about the whole thing, that she didn't feel like she was probably just another conquest, but that might have been because she knew that as charming as the rocker was, she wasn't going to give up all the goods just because she was sweet, funny, sexy as hell, and paying for their meal. At least, she hoped she wasn't going to be that easy. If you were going to be a shameless slut for some woman, Joe, this one wouldn't be a terrible choice. And she'd probably know what she was doing, so...Joey laughed a little, because Jamie really was so confident, and she kind of envied that. As it was, she was just happy to be in her presence. For a moment, she considered taking notes, but she just didn't want to stop staring at her, didn't want to miss a thing, and they really were having such a good time. ”I'm still surprised that you're paying. Kinda makes it a real date. Like... more real than it already was, I guess.” More nervous laughter followed, and Joey shook her head. ”God, just ignore me.” Her and her word vomit and senseless nothings. Even when she rambled about the whole 'poor, friendzoned Joey' speech, Jamie was quick with the compliments, and with the... oh. She called her awesome. And then she kissed her, and it was... it just was. Joey hadn't kissed many women, or been kissed by many women, but she didn't need the experience to know that this kiss was to infinity and beyond good. Beyond 'beyond good.' Joey kissed her back, a little tentative because she didn't know what she was doing completely, and was more than happy to let Jamie lead, especially when it was causing knots and other craziness in her stomach. Then, their lips parted, and Joey blinked a few times, trying her best not to look like a fish out of water. ”Okay, so you should maybe do that again, but in a place where I won't feel awful about my body taking control of my other, more sensible faculties, and putting on a show.” What did that mean? Was she speaking a language that was even foreign to herself now? Was this confident Joey? Essentially, she had placed the ball in Jamie's court, and was now insanely curious to see to what and where it would lead.[/blockquote]

Jamie’s face couldn’t help the mild scrunch it did at Joey’s proclamation that she felt like she was gonna faint at the hands of some physical affection from a hot woman. Faint? Seriously? Why? There was nothing wrong with a little touching, a little kissing, some mild petting, stroking the hair away from a girl’s face, or a semi-sexual caress over skin… Why would any of that be so bad as to make her-? Oh. It was too good, was the problem. The mermaid had never had that problem. When she found something good, she kept it, or kept doing it, depending upon the circumstance. Spending time with Joey, that felt pretty good, so she kept at it. Had amused or happy-fied her since about… well, a few minutes into their interaction. She thought the little author was kinda charming, in an awkward way. But awkwardness, she had found, was just due to some lack of validation. Now, what had dropped Joey down to that level was probably several things, which translated over into romance too. And ya know, the standard societal issue that nerds weren’t appealing. Though that one was changing… Yep. Good thing, too. Though now that took some of the surprise away from it when Jamie actually started hitting on a nerdier girl... Nah, she was kidding. She liked that people were starting to see those diamonds in the rough. Like Joey. People had likely noticed her before, but hadn’t quite managed to pull off getting her head out of its own space long enough to pay attention to them. The mermaid just wasn’t one to give up. It was proving to be a good thing. So far. Save for the way Joey kept doggin’ on herself.
’The only time there’s ever a need for fainting with hot women is A: if you’re really ill, or B: after a particularly fantastic orgasm.’ There, sit on that one Joey. ‘Cause the implication that Jamie had made some women pass out after sex was pretty damn clear. Which would, hopefully, lead her companion’s brain into that arena for them. And maybe it did, a little, ‘cause she wanted to change up her response, making Jamie chuckle, a lovely string of notes. ’Word vomit’s not so bad. At least you’re honest. I can work with that. As for having your way with me… Pretty sure it’d be the other way around, and if that’s something you’re interested in, I bet we could work it out,’ she said with a sassy, playful wink. Was she serious? Did she really mean that? Shockface! Who knew?? Nobody but Jamie. Truthfully, given the opportunity, she likely would’ve taken Joey into the back and screwed her brains out, but only if that was what the little ginger wanted. If not, well, she was perfectly happy to just spend a lovely lunch with her, making her feel special and desired and squirm in the most delightful way. And yeah, Joey was squirming. The mermaid might’ve been making her uncomfortable- good or bad, she’d yet to determine- but at least the author knew she was lusted after. A powerful feeling, that. Jamie knew. She got to experience it quite a lot. Lent itself to her abundance of confidence. And the ability to play little games with Joey like the secret stories thing. Or tell her that she didn’t shower or eat for three days, and still feel hot in that moment.
’Nah, sweetie, we’re chicks. Our brains scatter all over the place all the time, even when we’re focused. Gotta be thinking about lots of things to be comfy. Food just happens to be one of ‘em. Though I applaud the toaster maneuver. Favorite flavor of Pop-Tart, go.’ A little snap and point, and the conversation was back on Joey’s side, making the mermaid smile and eat a few more bites of her lunch while her companion talked. It was gone a little while after that, and, given her satisfaction with the meal and the company, she was more than happy to pay. Which, apparently, still shocked her date. But, hey, it was a date that she had actually liked. Why wouldn’t she pay for it? ’Pretty, of course it’s a real date. I asked, you said yes, we’re at a restaurant eating food and learning about each other and I’m gonna pay. Suffer. Be on this real date with me.’ Her wink was teasing, a little joke to lighten the other woman up, before she continued. ’As for ignoring you… That would kinda defeat the purpose, don’tcha think? Besides, I like you, so that’s somewhere closer to impossible than you might think.’ It was then that the waiter brought them their ticket, and Jamie glanced over to Joey again, before pulling out her wallet. ’You want anything else first?’ Waiting for the response, she set her wallet on the table while they kept talking. And oh goodness, some of the ridiculous things that Joey said… Had she not made it abundantly clear that she- yes, she, Jamie Adrastos- liked her? And who cared what some dumb blonde cheerleader thought? Huff. Not the mermaid, certainly. And she would prove it. Joey was worth more than friendship, as far as she could tell. So yeah, she easily reached over and kissed the woman, molding her lips to the smaller woman’s, a soft kiss, but a kiss nonetheless. Something as sort of a decadent declaration of intent. Take that. And she did, responding quite well, not venturing anywhere crazy, but still an enthusiastic participant. The words that came after the kiss were certainly encouraging, in an y case.
’So… that’s a ‘no’ to bending you over this table and having a wildly inappropriate make-out session? No pasta sauce in our hair or forks poking you in the back?’ A saucy wiggling of her eyebrows followed, before she serioused it up a bit, shaking her head. She’d take some time with this one. Joey wasn’t actually ready for what she was askin’. ’You go out with me again, we’ll talk about having ourselves a private show, hmm?’ Yes, that was her asking Joey out again.

This date was going... better than she expected. Sure, there were lots of opportunities for Joey to make a fool of herself, still, but so far she hadn't scared off the other redhead, and that, for her, was a very good sign. Joey just didn't have the biggest amount of confidence when it came to being herself around other people that were obviously more confident and popular than she could ever be, even in her wildest hopes and dreams. Joey had even made a few comments about how physical intimacy with another woman would likely make her nervous enough to pass out, and then she actually thought she might pass out because of the way Jamie responded. That comment was... well, it sent a jolt straight through her body as if she had been struck by lightning, and was more bold than she ever would have expected. The human didn't really know much about orgasms, or sex – okay, that was a lie. She knew about it in theory, from a scientific standpoint and a few situations where she had taken matters into her own hands, but in practice? Yeah, she was a definite noob. Jamie apparently wasn't, but Joey had already kind of guessed that, although the thought of her being so bold about sexuality and sex in general kind of made the human a little bit hot and bothered and fighting for an adequate response. She really didn't think there was one, but she tried her best. Like she was saying, if she hadn't already scared her off... ”Only two situations, huh? Good to know. Maybe I'll get to experience the better option of those two someday.” Joey shrugged and gave a nervous little chuckle and smile combination, and hoped that she didn't sound like an innocent, fumbling, idiot virgin. Which she kind of was, but she didn't want Jamie to know that... not then, at least.
Oh, but then the confidence continued! And the comments got worse. More charged, and she had played off of Joey's word vomit in such a way that the human literally didn't know what to do with herself, so she fidgeted, messing with her own fingers and just looking at the other redhead in a helpless manner. Then, more word vomit. More word vomit that contained information she had been hoping to keep for herself. Or save for a rainy day. Or at least use in a more relevant situation. ”For honesty's sake, then, it's pretty safe to say that nobody's ever really tried to 'have their way' with me. Or vice-versa. And while I'm interested in it happening in the future, I've just never gotten so lucky. Gonna be a virgin forever, yay!” Joey did an awkward little fist pump, and blushed profusely when what had actually come out of her mouth spun back around to hit her eardrums and let her know what she had actually said. Whoops.
Joey was so, so happy when the conversation moved away from sex and toward something that she could actually talk about. Something with which she had experience – like her toaster maneuver. Okay, it was supremely nerdy that she'd moved the toaster close to her computer just so she could make Pop-Tarts without having to dislodge herself from her computer and the game on it. She'd even gotten good enough to handle the keyboard and mouse while simultaneously putting Pop-Tarts into the toaster. She cold open the box one handed. But she wasn't going to tell Jamie all of that. However, the other redhead seemed to think it was awesome, even had an explanation about how this ingenuity was directly related to being female, and Joey smiled. ”'Necessity is the mother of invention,' isn't that how the saying goes?” Okay, so that was a little better of a response. Points for that one. But then Jamie asked her a question, and she drummed her fingers against her chin for a moment, thinking. Asking a girl for her favorite Pop-Tart flavor was kind of a serious thing... so much deliciousness. Difficult choice. ”Um... okay, so not as bad as if you had asked for my favorite movie or video game, but still hard to choose. Um... I'd have to say... Cookies & Creme, and if you don't agree with that, then the only possible second option that is acceptable would be cherry. But it has to be frosted. Unfrosted Pop-Tarts are the devil, I'm sure of it.”
Jamie continued to offer paying for the date, and finally, finally Joey caved enough to let her. Caved enough to try to relax and 'be on the date' with Jamie, as she had requested. The redhead was actually having a lot of fun, despite the few hiccups that were pretty well her own fault. Still, she had to give Jamie credit for being a trooper, and for thinking that she was charming or whatever anyway. She was a hard sell, and she knew it, and her quirks would probably cause a lot of sane people to give up, but the other redhead seemed to like her and her quirky little habits and hang-ups. Except not self-deprecation, and Joey could appreciate that. After all, she wanted to be more confident, she just didn't know how. ”I'm glad you like me. Really. I don't know why you do, but you know.. I'm just not gonna question it. I'm just gonna be happy that you do and be on this date, because I'm having a great time with you.”
It only got better when Jamie kissed her, pressed those soft lips right to hers and made her entire world spin, and Joey returned it. She'd had a few kisses that were smaller scale or accidental before – drunken Spin the Bottle and whatnot – but this was... this was everything she hoped that her first kiss would have been. This was a kiss that was worth remembering, and it actually kind of shook loose a little bit of confidence that Joey didn't know she had after they broke apart and Joey actually flirted with her gorgeous date. ”Pasta sauce in my hair really doesn't sound like fun, but maybe the rest of it could happen when there's not so many obstacles.” Was she just saying...? Yeah, she was. That was a direct invitation for sex. Or at least some really heavy making out in the future, and Joey was pretty proud of herself. Then, she swallowed hard when Jamie asked her out again.
”Just let me know when, and I'll make room in my schedule. I'd love to go out with you again, Jamie.” Joey said, and then grabbed a napkin and scribbled her number onto it. She handed the paper to Jamie and then the other redhead picked up the check. They made their way out of the restaurant, and Joey held Jamie's hand for a few minutes before they had to go their separate ways. Joey actually initiated another, smaller 'goodbye' kiss, and then smiled. ”Don't wait too long to call me, okay?” Then, she released Jamie's hand and walked in the other direction, feeling happy and... well, really wanted for the first time in her life. It had been a really, really good day.
